Sunak's campaign website registered before Johnson quit
Aoife Walsh

BBC News Live reporter

Rishi Sunak has launched his leadership bid and with it a new website, Ready4Rishi.com, to promote his campaign.

We checked the history of the domain name for Ready4Rishi.com and found it was registered on Wednesday, 6 July - the day after Sunak quit as chancellor and the day before Boris Johnson resigned as Conservative Party leader.

We also checked the history of the similarly-named ReadyForRishi.com, which redirects to Ready4Rishi.com.

We don't know who set ReadyForRishi.com up, but that domain name was registered on 23 December, 2021, long before Sunak quit.

So far, Sunak, Braverman, Tugendhat and Badenoch are the only people to put their names forward officially.

Baker, despite being one of the first people to talk up how interested he was in running, has instead said that he won't run and is supporting Braverman instead.

I imagine there's a lot of behind-the-scenes deals going on to keep the candidate list as short as possible to get us to the final two and get the campaigns underway as soon as possible to try and hold off Labour's no confidence vote.

Unless Javid or Hunt throw their hat in the ring in the coming days I'd imagine we'll have Sunak/Tugendhat final two by the end of the week for a contest during the Summer recess. I can't see anyone other than Rishi taking it, even though he was among those fined in Partygate and has spent the last couple of years as Boris' right-hand man.

The constant pressure for the No Confidence Vote from Labour is a genius move on Starmer's part, tbh - it's clearly not going to work, because the Tories absolutely won't want a General Election on the back of all their recent by-election defeats, with the negative press around Johnson still rampant, and - of course - with no leader yet. But that means that all of these people who have tried to claw back their reputation in the eyes of the public this week by resigning, calling for Boris to stand down etc. are now going to have to vote that they have confidence in Boris to stay on as Prime Minister to avoid a GE.

Either Starmer gets a GE against a leaderless Tory Party at their lowest popularity in decades, or he forces them into making a move that publicly throws out their "integrity matters so we've distanced ourselves from Boris" spin that they've spent the week crafting.

I'm not massively keen on Starmer tbh (I'm a Labour man, but he didn't get my vote in the leadership race), but you have to admit he's playing an absolute blinder here. Baller move.

He may still throw in - certainly people are telling him to as one of the presumed favourites (and if he did I'd expect it to be him vs Sunak when we're down to the last two and the campaign begins) but he's seemed surprisingly quiet over the last few days. Not sure why.

What is the leadership vote timetable?

Sir Graham Brady, head of the Conservative committee which makes the rules on leadership elections has confirmed the final two leadership contenders will be narrowed down before MPs break up for the Summer recess on 21 July,

The final result of the ballot of Conservative members, and therefore a new leader and new PM, will come on 5 September.

But how will we get there?

Nominations will close on Tuesday, with candidates each needing 20 backers from among Tory MPs to go forward.

The first ballot of Tory MPs is expected to take place on Wednesday from 13:30 to 15:30, with a result being announced later that day.

To progress from there to the next stage, candidates will need at least 30 votes from MPs.

Then a second ballot is expected to happen on Thursday.

Once the rounds of votes have whittled the field down to two candidates, the choice will go out to Conservative Party members.

Over the summer, there will be around a dozen hustings around the country, where the two rivals will try to persuade the party faithful of their bid.

Brady says Conservative Party members will be able vote electronically and by postal vote to select their final choice.

BREAKING
Government won't allow confidence vote - Labour
Boris Johnson's government is refusing to allow time to debate a vote of no confidence, Labour says.

The party tabled the motion in Parliament earlier, with the aim of challenging Conservative MPs to oust the prime minister as they simultaneously hold a leadership contest.

Labour wanted to hold the vote tomorrow, but the party says the government won't allow it to go ahead.

Downing Street says confidence votes are conventionally held in governments and not individuals, such as prime ministers.

"This is totally unprecedented," a Labour spokesperson says. "Yet again the Tories are changing the rules to protect their own dodgy mates.

"All the Tory leadership candidates should denounce this flagrant abuse of power to protect a discredited prime minister.

In a statement, a government spokesperson said: We have given Labour the option to table a straightforward vote of no confidence in the government.

"They have chosen to play politics by tabling a vote of no confidence in the government and the prime minister."

But then they need the evil financial policies to distract from their rampant transphobia.

Otherwise people might start to question the fact that Kemi Badenoch, who was literally the Equalities Minister, did her launch event from a place that already had gender neutral toilets and got her people to tape homemade "Men" or "Women" signs to the doors.

It becomes less shocking when you consider they're campaigning only to Tory Party members at the moment, rather than the wider public. No need to put up a front of decency when you're only talking to people who welcome indecency.

In other news:
Government to hold a confidence vote itself

Nick Eardley
Political correspondent
The government is tabling its own confidence motion.
It comes after it refused to allow time for a vote requested by Labour because of the wording of the motion.
A vote is expected next week.
Labour were given the option to table a straightforward vote of no confidence in the government in keeping with contention, however they chose not to," said a spokesperson for the government.
To remedy this we are tabling a motion which gives the House the opportunity to decide if it has confidence in the government.
The government will always allow time for appropriate House matters whilst ensuring that it delivers parliamentary business to help improve peoples everyday lives.
