Why are any of them resigning? Why don't they just take a cue from the US Republicans? Conservative means you can break any laws you want

With Javid and Sunak it was most likely a case of seeing the writing on the wall and wanting to distance themselves as much as possible before they throw their hat in for a leadership contest.

Then the floodgates opened. Javid's speech this morning was basically calling out anyone who didn't resign as being complicit, and with Johnson all but fucked now nobody wants to be seen to be on the wrong side of this.

But, once again, when everyone is talking about principles over the next few days, it's worth remembering not only all the things they stood by Boris for, but also the fact that so many of them have explicitly mentioned that it was getting caught in a lie about promoting a sex pest rather than the actual act of promoting him that they objected to - they didn't like that it made them look bad.

The people quitting aren't stand-up guys and gals making a righteous stand in the face of Boris' bullshittery, they're people who have read the room and decided that it's more politically expedient to cast him aside now than it would be to curry favour with him.

Like Starmer put it this morning, "The sinking ship is fleeing the rat."
