12. Wanerstrand

It is very infrequent that Scar introduces a character that has a picture but also is not a comics character. There are hundreds and hundreds of characters in this campaign and nearly all of them are from comics - whether a long-time person like Joker or a very bit character like Pixie. And then you have the original characters that are given MtG art and put into the world for us to find.

Wanerstrand is a... medicine man? He lives in Skartaris, the land beneath the surface of the Earth, where the world circles around a central sun (like a Dyson Sphere). Skartaris is known as the world where the Warlord reigns, and Wanerstrand is a citizen of this world.

The first time we found him, he was just running his shop. Wanerstrand can speak surface, but not very well. He does his best, which means that any sort of colloquialism we use is lost on him, and half of the normal words as well. He tries to understand us, sometimes fails to, but if he does fail to, he then insists that HE is right when we are not.

Some times later, Wanerstrand returned, assigned by the Warlord to be the... car mechanic. There are no vehicles like that in Skartaris normally. It's like a medieval fantasy type place. But one came with us from the surface so Wanerstrand was put in charge. It was rather confusing when he asked us to find a Crankshaft Sprocket. Turns out he was just reading the car manual.

Wanerstrand is, without a doubt, the funniest character in this campaign to me. I have laughed on all of his appearances, and in some of them, until I cried. Scar can just seamlessly shift into this impossibly foreign character who is just insanely cheerful and hilarious, who can occasionally burst into these phrases of genius (not very often), but also speak of horrible things just matter-of-factly. He asked us to go find his son, Goat. He also asked us to find his daughter, Goatt. Both are pronounced the same. We spent minutes of session time each time trying to determine who he was talking about. Goatt. Two t.

Even typing this up, I am laughing in remembrance. Most campaigns are only original characters - this campaign is mostly existing comic characters, and Scar's take on them. But when an original character does come around - Scar goes all-out. And Wanerstrand will forever be some of the best laughs I have had playing a tabletop RPG.

Wanderstrand is something else. He is also potentially a very important support character to have as we've discovered there are ways to protect from the Anti-Life Equation... and Wanderstrand is one of the few that has the ability to apply this protection. It's so wild. He was using it on us and we had no idea.

Shiny Happy Aquazon is a teen idol superhero. She is the daughter of Senior Waveman Kimura, and has aqua powers. She has made it her goal at our base to energize the youth to put forward a new world order, utilizing the power of J-Pop to do so.

Aquazon passes by. "Eat my ass," she says in English, looking towards Canary.

Aquazon came in with a Blink 182 vibe in demeanor and instantly made her way into my heart

Lately, some of Aquazon draws inspiration from Maki Itoh.

11. Black Alice (Lori Zechlin)

Black Alice is a girl touched with magical abilities who had briefly been tapped by the Birds of Prey before everything went to shit. Early on, the Shadowpact referred us to Dayton, hoping to get us linked up with somebody with enough power that they could consider her a "magical nuke", with enough strength to maybe distract the Spectre for a second.

Enter Alice, a moody teenager, more goth and scene than emo, who spends her days smoking weed in the parking lot of Denny's. When we met Alice, we found her difficult to deal with, as well as learned her power - to emulate the abilities of someone else's magic.

That's Blue Devil, Enchantress, Etrigan, Misfit, Nightshade, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, and Constantine. Of course, if we really want her to be at full strength, then we need her to emulate someone else who we need to get to full strength.

So Alice is really cool in terms of abilities. In terms of how she uses them? Wellllll don't tell her I said this, but it gets a little dorky. Normally it's just she gets mad and turns into Etrigan and breathes fire on someone, or she tries to look cool and turns into Nightshade, but recently she decided she thought she'd look cool by turning into Constantine which really has just cemented something about her:

She's a poser. A total poser.

Alice suffers from self-esteem issues that aren't normally seen due to her putting up a front of indifference and indignance. She is more likely to come across as just a teenager who is flaunts her innate ability and thinks she's better than everyone else, when at core, there's a scared girl whose father, one half of her only family, got Equated. She used her abilities to keep her and her dad safe for a bit, but we had to pluck her out of Dayton (apparently canon) before the Spectre got her. And he got close!

Alice came as a package deal with the other half of her family - a dog named Rover. Rover is very dumb. He thinks to play ball is to slowly nudge a ball back and forth between him and you. If you toss the ball, he gets upset, and probably scared. Data 7 tried to date him once to make Pixie jealous, and I don't think any single person or animal understood what was going on. I mean, look at this dumbass:

Anyway, Alice had trouble finding a place, but over time, she's set up a few friendships. First was with Brennus (MI's magician son of Count Vertigo). Brennus is a very genuine guy who likes food and wears his heart on his sleeve for the most part. He's also tuff. Alice grew to like this and found herself crushing on him, which went bad when she kissed him and he had to tell her he was gay. Lots of teenage drama to unpack there, but she sucker-punched him at some point to "get back at him" which is totally not okay Alice, Brennus did nothing wrong.

A second of Alice's big relationships is with Pepper Spray (Inviso's chemist character). Now, Pepper had some issues with making friends, getting bullied, and such early on. It's no surprise she attached herself to a loner character in Alice. Alice puts on a tough front, and it's that front that Pepper found herself attaching to as a shield. This is interesting because Alice is sort of bullshit, but Pepper shields herself in the bullshit to give herself some semblance of strength (which is really Pepper in a nutshell). Also, Alice smokes a lot of weed and got Pepper onto it.

An interesting aspect of the Alice/Pepper friendship is that since Alice is the one that presents as strong (and lies about being older than 17), Pepper has leeched off of that in a way where it would be appropriate to call Pepper in more of the sidekick role - at least, from my perspective. Alice calls the shots, has the strong personality - she's the one in charge. And she needs someone to sort of boss around, like Pepper. It's a way for Alice to get her self-esteem up. And then for Pepper, she sort of just needs a friend who can take care of her, which is why she adapts well to the subservient position. It's a weird symbiotic friendship between two girls who NEVER would have been friends in high school or college. And it's so unique in that PC's are main characters - it's not often one falls into a more sidekick-type role (except when Data 7 serves a rat who is the boss of his gang).

A third relationship is the role model she has in Nightshade - a member of the Shadowpact, mistress of the Shadowlands, ex-Suicide Squad member, fashionista, and totally cool drink sipper. Alice needed a mentor - that's a running theme for those of us who are "Eighth Age magicians". See, the Seventh Age of Magic is ending thanks to the Spectre, so those of us in the Eighth Age will either help bring magic back around or be the last dregs of a dying concept. So Alice of course would only want to learn from somebody as dark as her to fit the aesthetic and cool enough where Alice doesn't have to put up a front about thinking they're uncool. And oh boy, is Alice a little sycophant, sitting in her chair with Nightshade, sipping a drink along with Nightshade... Eve seems to like it, so it works out, but still, it's entertaining Alice in a way that, while it's important for her to learn, might be a little unhealthy in the way she likes to set herself above others.

Alice fits in with this... well, I'd call it I think a quintet at this point, but for the first third of the campaign, we had this trio of young heroes - Freddy, Jaime, and Alice. Freddy had experience, Jaime was completely green (blue), and Alice was pretty new. These characters all have taken a major role on the stage of the campaign (and later-comers like Traci 13 and Misty have as well). But because of this, these are some of the characters who have had the most development or most opportunity to set up relationships. Freddy maybe a little less so since he's so established in-universe. Jaime maybe the most, but he had a lot of negative interactions with PC's.

Alice has been a poor young soul tortured by the state of the world, but also with a weight of responsibility of power on her shoulders that she's still learning to accept. And because of this, she has gone through such strides in the campaign - subtle changes, but realistic ones. A person doesn't completely change in a year and a half, but they develop, and we've been able to watch Alice do that in real time. She just feels so alive. There's a lot of depth to her, and a cool part of that is that it is hidden because she has so much trouble being open with people. It's so cool.

Alice also just has a lot of comedic value aside - some characters are fleshed out, some are gimmicks. Alice is fleshed out and has gimmicks. She's the campaign pothead. Despite PC's like Saoirse and Lush partaking plenty of their own. Brennus had to get high to get a spell recently, and he did it alongside Alice (which was a stellar scene). Also, Alice has Rover, one of the most pathetic of animals. And recently, Alice started getting concussions... like, all the time. She usually wakes up in some other form, but it's become a bad habit of hers.

It's cool seeing the NPC's who become such a core part of this campaign. Alice was maybe always destined to be one, but these characters all take influence from player actions, and Alice still has a long way to go. It'll be great to see where she ends up - if her hubris or fear gets the better of her against the Spectre, or maybe, if she gets inspired to be more of a hero than she should.

I mean, her and Freddy already tangled with the Spectre alongside T'charr and Terataya, and she did fine there. Suffered a concussion though...

Uptup!

This is the highest ranked character that my character has not spoken to.

At the end of the first Las Vegas session, the party went on a drunken bender in Vegas. Data 7 woke up with a homeless man, Lush woke up married, Silhouette woke up at the top of the STRAT, Pepper woke up in a pool of her own acid vomit that destroyed a fountain... and Roz'etta woke up next to her adopted daughter, Susie Tompkins. Except...

It wasn't Susie.

All we got before the session ended was this small pink-haired punk child. And all she said was "Uptup!"

In the next session, Uptup was a complete hellion. She would not listen to Roz'etta. She didn't speak English - Roz'etta has the superpower to understand any language, and she couldn't understand Uptup, because all she said was nonsense. She ran down halls, away from Roz'etta, and Roz'etta had to take care of this wild child while not knowing where her own was (Susie was force-feeding Roz'etta drinks to purposefully get her drunk).

Here are some things Uptup said:

"Ball" (said this in relation to Silhouette pronouncing Bow as ball)

Uptup became this small child that the party had to babysit. She didn't make it easy. She may not have made it fun. But by God she was the cutest little menace. Maybe it was party because I didn't have to deal with her in session, but I just absolutely adored this character beyond so much.

Eventually, the party found out that Squeak is the daughter of Miracle Molly, a drug queenpin with a motherbox who claimed to be the daughter of Mister Miracle, and the party had to give her back. The party gave back Squeak.

The party gave away Squeak.

This perfect, wonderful girl that Saoirse would be so excited to adopt, this little punk hellion, was given back to her mother.

Terrible.

I really can't express how disappointed I was at the time. The party ended up launching into a full-on casino heist, and Uptup! ended up with Nikhto (Silhouette's shadow which can be summoned to do things). During a big final fight, poor Squeak got shot. She's okay though.

One of the good things that happened was that Susie discovered that Roz'etta was carrying around Squeak, and thought that her mommy had replaced her. Thus, we got the meme line: "Kill Uptup now!" Which is continued to be said to this day.

Poor Squeak couldn't come back with us, but she will always hold a place in my heart. This amazing designed hellion child who just gave the party nothing but trouble, but also was so easy to love... perfection. And great was the part where, back with her mom's gang, she just said a sentence in English perfectly fine. Can't forget that.

Squeak will likely drop in my rankings over time, unless we kill Miracle Molly and rescue her and bring her back so that Saoirse can adopt her then she'll be at the TOP OF THE RANKINGS FOREVER.

Lush and the original Queen of Spades got blackout drunk and woke up married. They spent most of the time trying to find the lost original wedding certificate that had been stolen while trying to hide the situation from the Kind of Spades who would have probably killed them both, But once we found it there was hesitancy to destroy them since they had bonded along the way. And then when Queen was unable to return with us she kept her copy as 'collateral' that we would come back to help reclaim Vegas from Zazzala and HIVE who just rolled in and took the city over, but it's likely more than that.

Lush is in a relationship with Snapper however and shortly after returning we had found his ex-wife who was still technically his wife since they also didnt get things cleared up the way they were supposed to. Lush shared what happened with Snapper figuring that he would learn from the rest of the party, and he handled it well. It make it so Lush could not be actually justified to freak out about this situation because she was also married and he understood.

It's a beautiful mess

Meanwhile Saoirse got rejected by Lush but Lush's erased memories from Zatanna are living in another girl's head and those memories expressed that she would've chosen Saoirse.

9. Detective Chimp (Bobo T. Chimpanzee)

Chimp made his debut in Campaign 1, being summoned by Artemis's magic crown. Artemis, always looking for father figures, found an uncle in Chimp. We also used him as a call for aid, if I recall correctly, to help solve a riddle that we had already solved and just didn't properly check to see if we had the right answer.

Come to campaign 2, and Chimp is the leader of the Shadowpact, and order of people associated with the arcane who have come together with the purpose of saving magic. In this case, the Spectre is trying to destroy all of magic, as it is the source of sin in the world, or something along those lines. From the get-go, we get the Shadowpact at the end of week 2 - Blue Devil, Arion, Enchantress, Ragman, Constantine, Nightshade, Madame Xanadu, Nightmaster, mouse Phantom Stranger... all under the guidance of Chimp.

Chimp himself is not inherently magical, but he has drunk from the Fountain of Youth, which has given him some arcane boosts. And he's one of the best detectives in the world, second only to Batman, perhaps. So right from the get-go, we get this gruff, always-smoking, somewhat alcoholic Chimpanzee who's way smarter than any of us, and has to help wrangle us into helping the Shadowpact while handling the Pact on his side. See, the Pact resides in a pocket dimension called the Oblivion Bar - most of the members are marked by the Spectre, so they can't leave the bar. Chimp is one of few who can (Nightmaster and Ragman can without their sword and rags respectively). Chimp, also the leader, is therefore the emissary to Checkmate.

Chimp has maybe not had the most complexity, but he has had some good depth to go along with his strong character. A conversation with Chimp tends to hang out in the same sort of vein - he's smart, he'll talk through things, he might call you out for shit, he'll nod along when you're right... overall, he's a strong personality who isn't afraid to get in the muck. Chimp came along with us on a number of our earlier Pact missions - we picked up Freddy with him. Jaime with him. Maybe Alice too? I don't remember him coming to the Rock of Eternity to see Billy. Either way, he gets around.

Chimp also has a particularly unique relationship with Data 7. As said, he's sort of an uncle figure to the dog, who adopted himself to Rex, who is Chimp's pal who also drank from the Fountain. Chimp is the smart uncle. He may hang out in a smokey seedy magic bar, but he offers what support he can to Data 7 when necessary. Though he doesn't like to play around, he still offers the pup an ear to listen to, and honestly, calls him out for acting too young at times, which Data 7 needs. I mean, pup's gotta play, but he's old enough to act mature when he's with people he should act mature with.

Through everything that's occurred, Chimp has been a rock, and though the plot leads him to be well-involved by necessity, he is also involved because players like him. I mean, Roz'etta is studying up on apes to get ready to go to Gorilla City, and Lush is dealing with some crazy Green shit that Chimp is giving some little guidance on. As the cast expands more and more, it's harder to fit every character in given the limited amount of time we have, but Chimp deserves more for sure.

As time goes on, I expect Chimp to still rank high, but even Hal Jordan is rocketing up in ranking after I made this list (and we just met Carol Ferris), so there's going to be more and more competition as we go on. Chimp will always stay strong though. At least, as long as we stay involved with the magic in the campaign. And given I'm playing a magician, I can't see that changing.

Yes, you are correct. It was my fault, I legitimately denied it being the right answer and dragged our team to the answer of the very next riddle instead.

8. Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel)

Harley is scared!

We found Harley in Belle Reve, the institution where Amanda Waller ran her Suicide Squad out of. Harley was imprisoned. See, she is immune to the Anti-Life Equation. It might be due to her emotional disordahs. She was imprisoned along with some others dude to this, being experimented on by Huge Strange to figure out what was up.

Harley was very thankful to be rescued, planting a smooch as we took off. Nocturna and Cheetah assisted us in this rescue, though Cheetah lost an arm for it (she got it back). Even worse - Nocturna lost Saoirse's scarf. That's why she's only an honorable mention.

We brought Harley back to base where she was accepted onto the new Suicide Squad, which Nocturna is currently Squad lead of. And almost immediately, a few things happened...

1. She heard Jaime say "Harley Quinn crazy" and got angry and started trying to kill him with elaborate traps (including the old drop-a-piano-on-them).
2. She opened up a shrink's office... directly opposite from Simon LaGrieve's office, the shrink that was used for the Suicide Squad at Belle Reve.
3. She became friends with Brennus and immediately moved into his room.

Harley was here. And she was here to be an agent of chaos. But also order in some ways.

See, Harley's office has a special ability - flip a coin. Heads, you gain +1 to Willpower for the next session, as Harley provides insight. Tails, and it's -1 Willpower for the next session, due to Harley Quinn's crazy rubbing off on you.

Brennus is like a toaster, you see.

Of course, one can simply talk things out with Harley instead. Turns out, she was very good at her job. She just had emotional disordahs that got in the way. So she's able to provide a surprising amount of insight for the characters who visit her - granted she doesn't go crazy with them instead.

Even more, talking with Harley, you get to hear about her problems. Oh, her and Puddin' broke up, her and Ivy ain't togethah no more. All things that she would have a lot of insight into if she was observing them in someone else. In fact, there are times where Harley will diagnose someone or treat them and what she's saying would work exactly if directed back at her. But such is the burden of a great mind... and emotional disordahs.

In campaign 1, Harley fell to the backseat while her fellow area leader, Duela Dent, took frontstage. Harley only really provided Bud and Lou, her hyenas, to the fray. But here, Harley has found her voice. And it's such a strong voice. Like, Kaley Cuoco sucks ass compared to this one.

Harley is consistently providing a deadly combination - comedy from someone whose antics shouldn't be encouraged, poignant insight into player characters, and tragedy surrounding a girl who maybe really has just been a victim all along. And pianos falling from the ceiling.

Hint for 7: This character is not of one mind.

I wanna guess Misty for the obvious choice...but it's TOO obvious of a hint. So I'm gonna guess Mento.

I never ever would have thought Brennus and Harley would make sense as friends. But they do.
