PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ANY SPOILERS FOR THE CHARACTERS LISTED IN THIS TOPIC OR THE TIME PERIOD OF THE STORIES
ACTUAL COMIC SPOILERS THAT RELATE TO THE CHARACTERS MENTIONED MAY BE USED IN THE CAMPAIGN SO PLEASE SPOIL NOTHING

In Spring 2019, we began campaign 1 - a retelling of Batman's No Man's Land story with higher stakes, more characters, and the perspective of some original characters, working alongside Oracle to help put the city together and take it out of a dark age.

Campaign was fun! It went well. Then, in October, 2020, we began campaign 2. This has been an absolute monster so far, combining Final Crisis, Infinite Crisis, Spectre: Day of Vengeance, Secret Six vs. the Society, Lantern Wars, and most everything else in that time period, linked to a massive amount, if not all, of the characters that have been featured in DC Comics.

Each week, we split the players into two groups, and each group takes on a location/mission. This week marks week 77... meaning we have had 152 sessions so far (alongside one-shot story sessions, and low-stakes fun sessions taking place at our base).

In short - a group of players were found in suspended animation and have been recruited by Checkmate to fight back against Darkseid who has invaded the planet. In long, well, there's a lot more.

Feel free to ask questions if you follow along, but as for me, I shall begin with ranking no. 52 on the characters we've met so far. And there have been perhaps around a thousand, if not more.

Again, no spoilers. Thank you

52. A.J. Curry
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/7/5/AAOJ0pAADW9b.jpg

A.J. is not Aquaman. He is Arthur Joseph Curry. He appears to be the same person, with perhaps the same mannerisms, but missing most of the history that Aquaman experienced, as well as the moniker itself. We know not where A.J. is from. Removed from a split timeline? From another Earth? A proto-Arthur regenerated by the magics of the Parliament of Waves to take up Aquaman's mantle? Time will tell on this, but for now, we simply recruited him to Checkmate.

A.J. was paired up with King Shark when we found him, and this bode well for Nanaue, as A.J. was someone he respected that he would listen to. This allowed us to recruit King Shark as well, but A.J. is our focus here. As a "not Aquaman", there are a lot of oddities surrounding the guy and others' approach to him, but a few relationships I'd like to highlight are as thus:

Tom Curry - the real Aquaman's father. As far as we know, Aquaman got killed by the Spectre, leaving Tom alone without a child. A.J. told stories of losing his parents. So we have two men, who aren't actually connected, connected in perhaps the deepest of ways. We haven't had much opportunity to see this develop, but the idea that each represents/IS the opposite's lost family is a combination of intrigue, pathos, and perhaps a little ironic humor.

Minerva Gale - Minerva is Wicklebee's character, a blonde princess of Poseidonis who was tossed out of her home for being blonde. Minerva was saved by Aquaman and taken to be raised on land as a child. Minerva ADORES Aquaman. She is a fanatic. It is sometimes cute, sometimes worrisome. So when Minerva had to meet this "not Aquaman", we got to see how she would respond to the same man, but without all of the same accolades. She respects him, but instead of letting him make a play to find the lots of the Atlantean nation states, she took up the task herself, taking A.J.'s sword of Atlantis and thus far letting him support her. On the flip-side, A.J. has developed a crush on Minerva. This is both tragic and hilarious, as Minerva would never entertain such notions about Aquaman... but A.J. is just a young man from elsewhere.

Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes) - Jaime is a young adult thrust into his role as the Blue Beetle with little preparation. He is not very connected to the community or anything. So he's the right age and right lack-of-connection to turn into A.J.'s best friend. The two have recently also adopted Stargirl into their group to play Annoyball, a game where they toss a football onto Tom Curry's lighthouse to attempt to annoy him.

Also, I think you'd absolutely love the campaign. I won't talk too much about it until Han finishes the rankings, but I'd love to chat you up about it if you're interested at the end of the ranking. It's predominantly focused on retelling 2004-2008 DC Comics.

51. Bonny Hoffman
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/8/3/AAOJ0pAADW_H.png

Bonny Hoffman is one half of the Body Doubles, and is the half that one would consider to be the straight-man. They are a pair of mercs who made their debut in campaign 1 for us, utilizing some positively ridiculous methods of combat to try to capture Spirit (Hombad's child character) for the League of Assassins. Which is to say, weapons that used butter. Not sure where this idea came from from Scar, but it was the right kind of ridiculous to turn the pair into a hilarious group of NPC's. Carmen, the more airheaded and ridiculous one, and Bonny, the brains of the outfit.

In this campaign, the Body Doubles were working for Animal Vegetable Mineral Man in Dayton, trying to hunt down Black Alice in the area. By the time we went back, we had already extracted Alice, but they were now trying to deal with an army of animated clothing that Alice had left behind. Of course, we teamed up with the clothing. Given that the pair were such favorites from campaign 1, we did our best to only knock them out and take them home as prisoners.

Bonny, as a prisoner from the Society (the Earthling group working along Darkseid to conquer everything), gave us a lot more insight into the role of a select merc working with the villains who betrayed the human race. Carmen is fun, and silly, yeah, but Bonny has the depth that could be explored. Fear on turning against the Society and having them do something to hers and Carmen's loved ones. Lamenting how annoying her partner could be and how life had just turned out in a way to put her with someone she had trouble working with at times but was one of the only people she could trust.

Perhaps because she is so mercenary, it has been easier to build relationships with this character. She hasn't had any philosophical reasons to hate us or not work with us. A lot of it is business, and of course, planet getting conquered is not necessarily the best for business.

Bonny recently suffered a tragic injury due to miscommunication when Silhouette (Scarlet's roommate's character) shot her after we had Kobra execute an attack on our base from within. They released all of the prisoners in exchange for them assisting us, and then joining up with Kobra. The Body Doubles said that Death Cults were a no go, and Bonny got shot with an arrow before she could say as much. However, she lived, and the pair finally decided to join on with our version of the Suicide Squad.

Bonny has a way of referring to past operations and the nature of her job and history in a way that suit the more neutral-leaning characters in our PC party. At her core, though, is a character with a rather normal background, who is thrust into a variety of ridiculous situations due to her working with Carmen and usually going up against Resurrection Man. The straight-woman in a world of crazy. It's an interesting perspective, and one that is a delight to explore.

Bonny being the more popular of the two after campaign one belonging to Carmen was quite interesting. I think the Body Doubles have a really niche audience (since Resurrection Man has a really niche audience) in comics, but they were beloved enough to earn themselves a one-shot comic in the late 90s! Honestly, it's a shame they never get pulled into other media.

Okay, so let's do this fast.

Campaign 1 - we all established our characters, with a choice of contacts if we wanted them. My character was, in a single sentence: "Piano player for the Penguin who is forever friend-zoned by Barbara Gordon".

After a few opening sessions, the earthquake hit, and after a small timeskip, we were thrown into No Man's Land. We ended No Man's Land by uniting the city under the leadership of Mayor Arthur Brown, aka Cluemaster.

So for this campaign, three people chose to play their characters from the prior campaign, and the rest of us went in with someone new.

It is five years after No Man's Land. And in little blurbs all of our characters got, we got abducted by agents of what appeared to be Checkmate, and then were missing for a few months.

In our opening sessions, we were woken up from suspended animation tubes. One group in Metropolis by Mitchell Black Peacemaker, one group in Gotham by Ratcatcher. Each of us were told how the world had been absolutely screwed over-

The villains of the world united and attacked Metropolis. A number of heroes were missing, but the ones that were around stuck there to fight. The heroes lost. Superboy was killed.

Later, a three-hour broadcast went over every air/internet/radio wave in the country - the Anti-Life Equation. In one fell blow, a large portion of the world was Equated. Mindless aggressive sychophants from Darkseid.

ADDITIONALLY as we came to find out at the end of each opening session, the Spectre had become unhinged and was trying to destroy all magic.

Anyway, the Metropolis group found a city taken over by Justifiers, the Equated, and the Society. They managed to escape and find the contact, Snapper Carr, but Peacemaker got killed by Prometheus in the process.

In Gotham, we escaped through the sewers to Slaughter Swamp, but on the way, found out Gotham had been taken over by Simon Hurt and his army of cyborg OMAC's. We got to the Swamp, met with Snapper Carr, and snapped to our base...

Z'onn Z'orr. A base in the ice in Antarctica used by White Martians in an invasion from five years ago. It was the most secure place on Earth, and there we would operate as agents of Checkmate under the direction of Amanda Waller.

Since then, we've gone on two Snaps a week - usually to locations on Earth (Berlin, Los Angeles, Gotham), but recently found a convoluted way to get to space. We just recently, in week 71, set up our second base in the stars on Oa, now ready to help earn some clout with the Green Lantern Corps.

On the way, we've dealt with and integrated with the Society, stopped a couple of Apokalyptian Fire Pits from opening up, met up with the Shadowpact to help fight the Spectre, and assorted other fun bits.

This week, we are doing a continuation of a session in San Francisco after getting captured by Bolt's son and being taken to Alcatraz which is under the control of the Mad Hatter, and the other group is doing their fourth session on Hardcore Station in outer space which has been a murder mystery where they have to prove that Rac Shade, the Changing Man, did not do the crime that only he could possibly have committed.

It's a lot. But it's loads of fun.

50. Dylan Battles (Not Firefly)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/5/7/AAOJ0pAADXJp.png
Dylan Battles is a mechanic with a background working on supervillain tech, which is how he ended up in Firefly's old suit. After making a face-turn, Dylan ended up working with Kate Spencer, the Manhunter, which included being in contact with Obsidian and his boyfriend, Damon Matthews.

Dylan was found in Los Angeles, working alongside Joe Hollywood. Dylan had been using his suit to distract the other Firefly in the city - one with a lot more destructive power. Joe Hollywood was killed in the process (RIP) but Dylan managed to help us escape.

Part of my own attachment to this sequence is that my character, Saoirse, has a background with Jade. I've spent a lot of the campaign hunting down clues to her or her family (Sentinel, Obsidian), and in the process, we've run into Obsidian who was a little crazy and working for evil Shade, and in an attempt to find him again, I tried to get an address in Los Angeles to go to. Somehow, after visiting Jade's apartment in LA and encountering Dylan, we ended up where I wanted to go. All we found was Dylan, Obsidian's boyfriend, and Manhunter's ex-husband and son (the ex-husband had his head removed by having his neck melted by Vis's character, Pepper Spray), but it was a good group of characters to bring back to Z'onn Z'orr.

Dylan has a workshop where, once per week, we can hand him off a piece of equipment, and he'll either ruin it or upgrade it. The upgrades are creative and silly and a lot of fun. For example, I had a pair of handguns that got combined into a single gun with a twin barrel that have autotracking technology. Fun stuff.

We have plans to bring Dylan out in the field to help surrounded an Equated Miss Martian with fire to try to get her mind to break and possibly reset to clear her of the Anti-Life Equation, but we'll see when we manage to get there.

The entire Kate Spencer comic run pretty much runs the length of the campaign's publication dates. It's probably one of the best comics that no one has heard of out of the time period - Marc Andreyko just does a stellar job crafting a really interesting cast of characters, Dylan included. I'm a huge Manhunter fan, so it's nothing less than awesome to expose people to the series.

49. Black Pirate (Jon Valor)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/7/2/AAOJ0pAADXfw.jpg
Jon Valor is a ghost pirate.

We found him when we went to Opal City, home of Starman. The city was encased in a dome of shadow, courtesy of Simon Culp (the bad side of The Shade), and during the excursion there, which was a multi-session journey, we encountered a ghost pirate ship. We got them to join up, and since then, we've had a ghost pirate ship back at base.

Now, the ship itself is cool - it was our first seafaring vessel which was needed to take a few missions. It can be corporeal, and at other times, with no living folk on it, it can turn incorporeal and be immune to being attacked and can fly around and shit. This gives it some versatility, and we've done a number of sessions riding the ship so far.

So Jon Valor is the captain, and the one who speaks with us. He has a classic romantic sense about him when it comes to piracy - the kind that, say, loosely inspired One Piece, or the Steve Bonnet of Our Flag Means Death. Thus, when we speak with Valor, we are not talking with some scourge of the high seas, but rather, the more honorable sort, at least on the surface. This makes him align morally with us a little better for sure.

Jon Valor tends to get some good time in sessions, where he tends to be a good character to open things with and get us in the mood. In particular, his interactions with Minerva are great. Minerva goes on many aquatic missions since she is Atlantean - and our boat is a ghost ship. Minerva also has a phobia of ghosts. It's a fun interaction, as she clearly doesn't want to entangle with him, but the encounters are necessary.

Hint for 48: This character is or has been a sidekick.

Starman remains my all-time favorite comic book series, and Valor is a minor but delightful piece of the series. James Robinson really told a fantastic story of piracy as the natural antidote to the more fascistic aspects of society. So great. As for my guess, I want to guess... Stargirl.

Prowley is a cat that belongs to Zatanna. We found him in Zatanna's San Francisco apartment. He speaks Ancient Egyptian. But he can also say his name. So Scar will do his dialogue like "Barata alioga taka ezu deta wo *Prowley*."
