The gun problem in the USA runs far deeper than any lobbying group. It's a cultural issue. As long as large parts of the country (and this includes both "red" and "blue" states) base their cultural identity on owning as many guns as they can just because they can, this issue will never go away. To fight the gun problem, you need to take it head on, similar to how Australia handled their gun culture after the Port Arthur massacre. Forcibly take guns out of everyone's hands and destroy them en masse. Make it so you can't just waddle up to your local Wal Mart and buy as many assault rifles and bullets as you want.

Like, imagine being presented with this story. And the other 30 K-12 shootings since january and thinking that gun control is not the obvious, easy and painless solution to this problem. Imagine your brain being so rotted through that you can still think that everyone should be walking around with an AR-15 strapped to their back at all times.

I wept during Sandy Hook, it was the first news story to ever hit me like that. Today I pretty much didn't care. This is what we want.

This is where I'm at. I already vote progressive/Dem down ballot - torturing myself over tragedies that most of the country doesn't care to solve is only going to harm my mental health.

Two of my uncles had access to guns and they're gone now.
My father lives with me, and I don't keep guns in my house. We almost lost him but he's still here because he didn't have access to a gun.

In 1996 at the Dunblane School in Stirling, Scotland, a gunman killed 15 pupils and one teacher. The response was the implementation of gun controls banning personal ownership of most handguns (other guns having largely been banned by then). There has never again been a single school shooting in the UK 26 years later. This is a solvable issue.

Im not being flippant or saying I agree with it, but if you think a federal weapons ban
strong enough to actually stop things like thiswould pass without a genuine civil war, you are even more naive than those people who thought Republicans were going to do bipartisanship because Dems picked Joe Biden.

A flat-out weapons ban wouldn't pass. A restrictive gun control measure that holds for 5-10 years that can be juiced up in restrictions over time would probably take.

You have to take the boil a frog method with stuff like that. Don't give people the space to be reactionary, but you have to have progress without giving up ground. And that's difficult while our country ping-pongs back and forth politically.

Because people decided to act that way based on what they were told by the government and the media. Its not ingrained in their nature.

That's not how our country works. Even if we managed to pass a sweeping gun ban, the protests would be overwhelming. And if January 6th, and the COVID restriction protests have taught us anything...the police won't do shit. They'll stand calmly, providing the appearance of protection, but at the end of the day, they will not do SHIT. They might even aid the right-wing in their efforts, because the police are very much on their side.

Exactly. While police love to enforce drug bans, occupations like police and military attract a lot of the over my dead body types, who arent just going to go along with the same thing for guns.

The United States is gargantuan. It's bloated. You can't go door to door.
First is restricting access to guns. Then further. Then further.

Gun ownership is expressly protected by the Constitution and any substantive change on this is going to require a constitutional amendment, which requires the agreement of 38 states.

It's really not. Individual gun ownership was only created as a right in 2008 with DC v. Heller. And if we can overturn Roe v. Wade after 50 years, we can certainly overturn Heller after 15.

The right is expressly stated in the 2nd Amendment. There's a bit of ambiguity about what exactly it means but it's definitely there in some form or other. The right found in Roe v. Wade is not expressly stated anywhere in the Constitution.

The police "being on their side" didn't stop them from standing around doing nothing during the nationwide BLM rioting either, so maybe the real problem here is that law enforcement in the US is a spineless joke.

Perhaps as a compromise, the 28th Amendment can say that the 2nd Amendment does not apply to the states? Then, states that want to ban guns would be able to do so.
