This is random but, speaking of Madoka ripoffs, did anyone here finish Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka? I watched the first episode when it aired and I've been meaning to get back to it. I don't usually like overly dark stuff, both Magical Girl Site and Raising Project were too much for me, but Spec Ops seemed so insanely dark that it became goofy in a way that I liked. I remember laughing really hard when the main girl's family was murdered by cuddly teddy bears. I hope they kept that tone for the whole show and it wasnt just an accident

I did. It remains over the top, though if you think the edge is funny because of the stuffed animal aesthetic, the main villains are human. Either episode 3 or 4 was particularly rough.

It seems I have a higher opinion of it than most, but I thought it was definitely solid, even if not at all great. Certainly watchable.

There's also Heartcatch Precure, which ended after Madoka started, but started before Madoka, so I guess that doesn't count. Prisma Ilya's pretty good too. Demon Girl Next Door is great and currently airing, even.

I assume they specifically mean dark magical girls shows, the Madoka ripoffs m. Almost all of them are duds.

The TV airing I think, I've actually never watched the others or the movies although I think I'd been told to watch Rebellion on a few occasions. I'm always wary with anime movies because it's often an effort to figure out what's recap or a soft reboot or canon if you've been out of the loop for a few years *cough* Eva *cough*. I'll probably watch up to episode 3 of the TV release regardless, but would another version be particularly worthwhile?

Bluray/home video release is what you want optimally. The movie versions look the best but it's obviously been condensed for film. Home release has everything and also looks better.

As for the movies, 1 and 2 are just the recap movies. Movie 3 Rebellion is indeed the actual sequel.

I do mostly mean more plot focused/darker stuff (I think I was spoiled because Utena was my introduction to the genre as a teen and I seriously cannot recommend it enough to anyone else who may read this), but I might check out Demon Girl Next Door! I honestly categorised Precure as pre-Madoka in my brain since I remember older series of it being out in the 00s, but I remember I enjoyed Hugtto. Never got round to any of the others after it since my free time kinda died but I'll check a newer one out.

Blu-ray or DVD isn't an option for me rn and I think I'm just on TV release, but I guess I'll just run through the show normally and check out Rebellion afterwards. I'm not too bothered with a lot of visual stuff, I'm just there for the art rather than image quality and my laptop screen isn't giving me high-res either way.

I mean it's MOSTLY just backgrounds stuff, it's not like it's required for the viewing experience.

I watched the Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions movie, so now I'm officially done with the series.

It was fine. Not bad, not great. It felt like a watered down S2, covering most of the same ground and reaching the same conclusions. A few things that weren't a problem in series format kind of stuck out in movie format, though. Despite the plot stuff that was going on, Rikka and Yuta seemed incapable of talking to each other about anything substantial. Something as basic as 'this is the situation, what should we do? What do you want to do?' just never happened and it annoyed me. It's fine in a slice-of-life comedy series because there was usually never anything going on, but stuff was going on in the movie and they still couldn't do it. Eh. The scenes themselves were usually fun and fine, I'm just not sure they come together into a greater whole.

Rewatched it a few months ago

Due to stuff going on in my life, I needed something relaxing with absolutely no drama whatsoever, so I rewatched about half of Flying Witch today. It's a distant second to Laid-Back Camp, but it's still one of the comfiest anime I've ever seen. I'll finish it tomorrow.

After that, though, I'll need something else that's light watching, preferably one I haven't seen before. I glanced through the 'iyashikei' page on tvtropes looking for stuff, but it's a minefield. I mean Taisho Otome Fairy Tale is on there and that anime got disgustingly dark at times. Yuki Yuna is on there too, lolwtf.

Anyway, if anyone can suggest something that's comforting with zero darkness, let me know!

Yama no Susume/Encouragement of Climb - though there is a bit of drama in S2, it's mostly on the same level of drama we see on Laid Back Camp trips...? Also, it may look like a lot of episodes, but S1's episodes are like 3 minutes while S2's episodes are like 11 minutes.

I think Aria is pretty much the go-to iyashikei anime if you haven't seen it already.

Found something called Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan. It's certainly a weird show. The idea of a bunch of 30 something depressed failure TV hosts snapping at kids about how life sucks complete dick WHILE on TV has a sort of Clerks or Dilbert vibe to it that kinda works. Only and episode in, but I think I'm the right sort of person to respond to this melancholic cynical comedic shit.

I mean, I'll take it after the double team of Miss Caretaker and Duke and His Maid, which were nothing but BOOBIES!

Fun anime note: they had the strawhat VAs voice the imposters, but not for their character. Sanji's voice actor is fake Luffy for example.

I finished Super Cub. It definitely belongs in the same category as Laid-Back Camp or Flying Witch (which I also finished the other day but don't have much else to say about, I mean it's just a comfy slice-of-life about a witch). Thanks for recommending this, Mac!

Anyway, Super Cub. I enjoyed it a lot! It was painstakingly slow most of the time, but somehow I found it mesmerizing rather than boring. Koguma really struck a chord with me for a lot of reasons. I liked how her depression was represented by the world being mostly grey until she gets a flash of color from riding the Cub. It was a neat effect. I also appreciated that getting the Cub wasnt the only thing she needed to be happy. I feel like that happens too often in stories that are about one hobby or sport or club or whatever, that it's like the character was crafted with one missing piece that this new thing fulfills and now they're good. As much as she obsesses over that Cub, that didn't happen with Koguma. It's just the inciting incident, the first step on a journey that lasts through the whole show.

I loved that she was still realistically quiet and awkward while making friends. A Cub might break the ice but it can't turn her into an extrovert. The friendships grew at a refreshing pace too, they werent just best pals instantly. I also loved that the world was still grey most of the time, like she was still depressed. The Cub didn't fix everything, life isn't that easy, but it leads her to find more and more things that give it color. There were so many subtle moments along the way and they were all nice to see.

Overall, this was an impressively crafted story from an anime I half suspect was made to advertise Super Cub motorcycles. I liked it a lot.
