I hate that these trailers are giving me the false hope that Gohan and Piccolo are going to be doing something

The synopsis for the story essentially states it's their time in the limelight. Goku/Vegeta are training with Beerus thus unavailable. #17 is back on his island. No one else to save the day.

I figured I should start prioritizing watching and rewatching Netflix anime because at some point they'll ban password sharing and I ain't subscribing on my own.

I rewatched Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan. I remember enjoying it a few years ago. When I checked the archive website for what past me thought about it, I saw that it was even one of the fifteen anime I recommended people watch for the 2018 Anime of the Year awards we did here. It's about girls in the Japanese air force who get swallowed by secret dragons to control them from inside their guts. It's such a zany premise, and the first time through I was just struggling to keep up while wondering what crazy thing would happen next. It was all so charming.

Turns out, that feeling can't be replicated. Even with only hazy memories of what happened, my opinion of this fell quite a bit on rewatch. The themes were clunky and, at times, uncomfortable. Like, what they were trying to convey was super obvious but the supernatural aspects didn't support it and the real world stuff was too real to be any fun. Hisone was still a fun character but most of the others were bad or, at best, bland. Without the 'man this is nuts' aura the show had the first time through, everything that happened just felt it was happening to push forward a pretty basic message.

Hopefully this is just one of the rare anime where the magic can't be reexperienced, because it's kind of a bummer to rewatch a 7/10 and come out the other end thinking it's a 4/10.

Rewatched S1 of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions today, plus the first season OVA. It was still really good! I like Rikka and Yuta a lot but all the characters are good. The imagined fight scenes are always neat. The plot gets surprisingly heartfelt at times too. I remember enjoying S2 a lot more than the first one, so I'm excited to rewatch it tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have time for the movie too, that's most of the reason why I'm rewatching this because I've never seen it before.

This whole Archipelogo/Amazon Island/Impel Down/Recue Ace arc (Im sure theres a better name for that) has been really exciting. The prison breakin specifically was awesome. Im sure reading it week to week it mightve felt slow, but reading it all at once it felt well paced to me. Loved the callbacks and getti mg to see people like Buggy and Crocodile and his gang again.

When the straw hats got separated after the fight with Kuma, I thought we were gonna through this whole arc of finding everyone again Im happier with what I got! It actually feels good to have some time with Luffy as the main focus, weird as that might sound.

Its interesting reading this while also knowing (and I guess Ill spoil this??) Blackbeard kills Ace. It paints this whole rescue in a weird light, since obviously its not gonna go right. Still very interested to see what happens though!

Yeah okay with 1050 we can probably start putting a bow on Wano now and begin what's probably going to be a Post-Wano type of mini arc before they leave for real.

I was basically an end of the series tier fight so I wonder what the actual end of the series is going to be like @__@

Still like a year before the anime gets to this point though so plenty of time to see it again

Something I saw on reddit related to this chapter

Chapter 240 back in Skypiea they talk about the clouds there having pyroblon in them which is the same ingredient contained in sea prism stone and that it comes from volcanoes. So it wouldn't be too far fetched that being in a pool of magma like kaido and big mom are would have the same effects as being in contact with seastone.

Yeah, that was great. If that sequence was the finale before the time skip (I have no idea if it is), that would be a great note to end on. I come out being particularly impressed by the Admirals, power-wise, they truly felt like juggernauts on the battlefield. Of course, emotionally, everything going on between Luffy and Ace and Whitebeard was top-notch. Considering most of what I know of Ace's and Whitebeard's relationship comes from this battle, I think that's a testament to how well it was done.

As for the finale... well I was right about that happened to Ace, just not who did it. Don't know why I thought Blackbeard did it, maybe I misheard? Maybe I took "Blackbeard was involed/around" too literally?

Took my a few days longer than I thought, but I rewatched the second season of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions along with watching the S2 OVA for the first time. I remember when I first watched the series, the consensus I read elsewhere was that the second season wasn't as good as the first. Personally, I think it's a lot better! Not only does it still have plenty of what made S1 good, Shichimiya adds a lot to the character dynamics. Tomorrow I can finally watch the movie. I hope it provides good closure to the series

Finally got round to watching Odd Taxi after SMFAS. It's a good show, and it has the most engaging beginning I've seen in anime for a long time. The characters are interesting, the atmosphere is weird, in a good way. The art and sound design are mostly good, albeit with some minor gripes anyone that's watched the show will know about, and the plot, pacing and especially dialogue is solid. It just kinda feels like there was something missing? I don't know how else to put it, but it feels like a good show that's a puzzle piece or a bit of creative flair away from being something genuinely special.

(Non-major spoilers)

Maybe it's that it's always a balance between being totally surreal and very grounded. It doesn't quite lean into the utter absurdity I felt it might have been going into after the first episode, nor does it turn into a genuinely tense thriller, mystery, or even an in-depth character study, all of which it felt like it could have done at some point. Not to shit on the show because it's still very good, but I think it could have been something more.

Gripes aside, the OP and ED fuckin slap.

(Major spoilers)

I wrote the above just before watching episode 12 (which I thought was the last before starting) and 13, and I feel all that even stronger than before. I think most of the last two episodes were satisfying and I liked the animal reveal. It felt clever without being forced or pretentious, adequately foreshadowed but not too obvious. But then the rest of the final episode feels so lacking in closure to me, and the very ending was kinda... safe? I don't know how else to put it. If I had tried to guess the ending plot points beat by beat aside from the murderer, I feel like I would have nailed it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it felt simultaneously too happy and not happy. Most of the main characters appear happier and the yakuza are less of a problem, but literally nothing else is resolved or even really discussed. I'm kinda frustrated because there's almost everything here for this to be one of my favourite anime and I was waiting for about ten episodes for that one thing that makes it click with me, but it never came. As is, I have really mixed feelings, and I enjoyed it, but less than I could have.

Also, the way the Dodo dude was handled irritated me. I liked his focus episode and the episodes leading up to it were really strong, which made me really hopefully especially considering how much I struggle with the starts of shows. Unfortunately, they decided to just... kinda do nothing with him? He sometimes shows up to create conflict and tension, but he might as well be a husk with no personality for most of it. It felt pretty obvious he was a red herring given he was also a black cat, but as a lover of mystery media, it irritates me that he was set up in such a way and receives almost nothing else for the rest of the show? There's not even anything approaching a payoff at the end of the show which makes it all the more frustrating. He's a plot device with almost no agency or impact, not a character. When you have an ensemble cast and use about 1/10 of your screentime on a character with no personality, it might be worth just rewriting stuff. It's frustrating because even though the episode was good, it hinders the overall story, which could have sorely used that extra runtime. Almost every other character in the story exemplifies his themes in some other way to the point that he wasn't necessary. It just feels like some focused script editing could have made this a masterpiece.

You can probably tell from typing up all of that how badly I wanted to love this show, especially after what I thought was a strong beginning. Everything looked to be set up and just... kinda fell flat. Based on the buildup, I thought what it aimed to do was cleverer or more creative than in actuality. It's like I came in late to watch it play archery, and I saw it shoot two bullseyes to start. When I waited for it to shoot the third arrow, it shrugged and showed me that it already dropped the first one in its own foot.

This probably seemed very negative and I still enjoyed this show a lot! I just can't help but wonder what it could have been with some changes.

Hot takes

I didn't like the ending to Odd Taxi. Still a fantastic show overall, but the whole sequence feels like it ties things up too nicely, and is a bit of a leap from what was mostly a very grounded show. Also the twist feels like it doesn't add anything to the story and is only there so the writers can say they surprised you.

Also I thought Wonder Egg Priority sucked from the beginning.

I seem to think the opposite of a lot of people in Odd Taxi - I think the slowness and the weirdness of the start made me think it was gonna become something it was never trying to be, and I was more interested in the alternative than what it actually did.

Agreed on WEP though. Gorgeous first episode in particular and a great first half, before jumping off a cliff towards the end. This conversation about it actually made me wanna go see some good magical girl shows. I've gone to rewatch the first few episodes of Utena (which is nuts and everyone should watch even if it's pretty old now) and Madoka (which is still utterly beautiful despite coming out a decade ago and even better than I remembered. It's made me wanna go finish the Monogatari series for that direction alone). Just about my only issue is Madoka ensured everything in the genre after it would pale in comparison. The only post-Madoka ones I remember being decent are Yuuki Yuuna and WEP (which have their... issues), and Revue Starlight (yes, it is a magical girl show. No, I will not elaborate.)

Which version of Madoka are you watching?

Asking since you mention the visuals specifically and they got a huge pass for the home release versus the TV airing, and then again for the movie versions. Especially the backgrounds.

Every version is gorgeous, of course.

I feel like I'm a lot more tolerable of Madoka ripoffs than most, but none of them leave an impact that stands the test of time at all. Yuki Yuna stands out as the exception, but other than that...Magical Girl Raising Project is probably the only one I think about at all? And that's a distant 3rd.

I liked the animal reveal. First I think having everyone be animals was kind of necessary, I mean imagine trying to follow a cast of that size if they werent easily distinguished animal people. It could've just been left as a world of animals, anime has certainly done stranger things. I liked how they tied it into other aspects instead, though. Odokawa can tell people apart because of it, that was neat. Plus it turns into a major clue with the black cats confusing even him. I dunno, I liked it.

This is random but, speaking of Madoka ripoffs, did anyone here finish Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka? I watched the first episode when it aired and I've been meaning to get back to it. I don't usually like overly dark stuff, both Magical Girl Site and Raising Project were too much for me, but Spec Ops seemed so insanely dark that it became goofy in a way that I liked. I remember laughing really hard when the main girl's family was murdered by cuddly teddy bears. I hope they kept that tone for the whole show and it wasnt just an accident

The TV airing I think, I've actually never watched the others or the movies although I think I'd been told to watch Rebellion on a few occasions. I'm always wary with anime movies because it's often an effort to figure out what's recap or a soft reboot or canon if you've been out of the loop for a few years *cough* Eva *cough*. I'll probably watch up to episode 3 of the TV release regardless, but would another version be particularly worthwhile?

lots of post-Madoka magical girl shows are good imo. Hugtto Precure probably the best of them?
