Sure did take every opportunity to fool me into thinking I was getting somewhere only to find out it looped back to the same area. Three times this happened. Even the catacombs led back. Why. Gave up on Leyndell and instead went to finish Ranni's quest which led me to the upper half of Ainsel river... uh ~~flying ants~~ are much more terrifying than regular ants. Yikes! I think Dex 12 gets you an awesome halberd. Also try an equipment setup where you have medium load instead of heavy load - your dodges are better. You don't magically become an invincible acrobat, but you'll be able to escape combos and such. Try that for a bit and then try to go back to heavy load, that's when you'll really notice the difference haha. Oh I'm never going back to Heavy again. You start as Heavy and it's awful. First thing I did was get back down to Medium. I still find myself too button mashy. I'm like "oh shit, roll, roll, roll" and then half my stamina is gone, the enemy is still in strike range, and I can't tank the hit without losing stance. I agree I need to get a ranged weapon. One on one I'm not too bad but once I have 3-4 things attacking me at once it's game over. I'm still using the starting Long Sword, though upgraded it to +1. I think I have the materials to level it further but I'm not sure that's the best idea. A bit of overkill, especially with the +5 from the Great Rune, but I was just so sick of getting 1 and 2 shot by everything in melee. Doing co-op is "free" though apart from the time investment. Doing summon pools in areas you outlevel can maybe be an easy way to farm - I was getting summoned in Weeping Peninsula in the late 30s/early 40s range by players demolishing things, easy runes. They also drop from rats which is maybe more efficient if you have an area with a bunch of those. Idk the drop rate though. You'll want drop rate and/or Arcane buffs. It says it stops fall damage so I immediately went to some places where I was too high to see if it unlocked them and nope. If a fall would kill you outright it still kills you. The situation I'm talking about is that I got ported into the capital by randomly opening a chest in a watchtower in the Weeping Peninsula. It landed me next to a site of grace, and there was one of those statues/giant automatons in the neighbouring room, which I narrowly defeated. Nothing happened after, since it was just a regular enemy, albeit a tough one. I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same one.
