Goddamn now I know what the curse of the PS4version is

More than anything I seriously can't believe how frequently this game can get me to earnestly mutter "what the fuck..." at whatever weird shit is around the next corner.

It's going to be hard for any other open world game to compare if this keeps up for the whole game.

I finally found a weapon that I like, the twinblade! It turned that knight encampment near the beginning from something I needed to stealth though (and I still died to the tough knight more often than not) into something I could slash through without a problem. I've even managed to beat two Evergaol bosses (still can't even come close against Crucible Knight, though). In the hub area, I also beat the AI invader. I tried twenty times with my dual starting swords and couldn't do it, with the twinblade I managed first try without even needing to heal.

My path through this game is really pushing me towards a Dex/Fai bleed build. Found a bunch of bleed weapons as I've played and now I stumbled across the Bloodflame Blade incantation.

How do you know that trolling Souls gamers isn't the reason why GRRM hasn't put out the next book?

The +8 holy halberd has been awesome. Havent upgraded a single weapon yet due to indecisiveness and this was a big upgrade.

Since there were discussions of Martins contributions in the last topic, yeah he wrote the backstory effectively. Apparently this included a lot of the characters and their relationships as well, the demigods were written by him it seems. I do think you can see this even in the opening, The Night of Black Knives is a very George RR Martin thing to write, obviously bringing to mind the Red Wedding but inspired by the real life Night of Long Knives just as that was inspired by the real life Black Dinner. It is overall incredibly From but with a twist from GRRM, I like the story I have uncovered so far.

Twinblade quickly became my go to weapon for taking down any npc invader, they can't handle it at all.

I almost have enough fp to use the stationary summon lady. She better be worth it...

Yeah some bosses have a ton of HP in this game. Also you've probably seen it if you've gotten under half but this guy has a phase 2 that can output even more damage. I'm like SL 40 and been putting this guy off, but that's because I'm a squishy mage.

Yeah that phase 2 change was pretty crazy. Basically ensures that you can only really get one hit in after dodging his attack, because of his counter if he realizes youre behind him. My uchikatana is +3, but I dont think I have the attrition to kill him, since one or two mistakes by me means death. I have a 100% phys reduction shield, but need 3 more strength to wield it. Maybe after that

Yeah, I came back for that guy around SL45 or so, along with a +7 Uchi and a 100% phys res, 55 stability shield. Went much better, and I got him down within a couple tries. I just wasn't doing any damage when I faced him the first time.

That particular boss is the only instance I've met thus far of an Evergaol boss that is blatantly stronger than the area they're in.

I find blocking to be marginally useful on bosses with big combo strings. You will save yourself one or two hits but also the attacks will shred your stamina and probably break your guard. Also, like Margit his phase 2 attacks are part magic (holy?) and deal a significant amount of chip damage.

I did finally find the Uchi though and had enough stones to get it to +6. Been using the magic crystal sword so far which I've also upgraded a few times by now. But maybe I should swap to the Uchi - I hear bleed is strong.

There are two characters whose questline you have to finish in order for them to be able to join. The two characters...well, just ask yourself which two Bros are the coolest Bros in the game and it's those Bros.

Got the busted ass Moonveil Katana everyone is talking about so it's time to respec lol.

This game is absolutely setup for Faith to make an insane first impression but for Int to be the craziest coolest endgame shit.

Unrelated: has anyone been invaded by another player yet? I haven't so far in 35 hours which seems weird. Do you have to have a Rune Arc active, or is it completely decoupled from that like co-op summoning?

Kind of disappointed. Didn't realize it took up 2 spell slots and uses over half my MP. Not remotely practical

I don't know if rune arcs play into it, but i think that most pvp is opt-in until you progress to an area after stormveil. The item to invade looks to be a consumable just like co-op, and I think you can only invade people who have done co-op recently?

I've been summoned once as a protector for someone who got invaded in the lake, but they died the second i summoned in so...

Yeah, they seemed to have changed the mechanics pretty significantly from what I can tell. You seem to only be able to invade someone who uses your invasion sign. So no more harassing random players who are just going about their day.

Seems to make invasions really weak, but I don't really mind since I never liked that system.

This is great.

I finally got a chance to start last night. I'm really into the flow of this game (I've been exclusively levelling my vitality early as I do in every other Soulsborne game and it's been working well so far).

Maybe I'm just used to the series by now, but this feels like the easiest opening I've seen from the series. But I'm also the type to go anywhere but forward in an open world game, so maybe I'm just higher leveled than the people I see complaining. Sometimes, I feel like people overlook the RPG side of these games and miss how much a little leveling can do.

Also, I'm not 100% certain how summon signs work in this game - I've only seen two NPC summons so far. Am I missing something about summoning other players?

Ok finally found the item that unlocks the ability to purchase low level smithing stones. Its in a cave called Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.. its near the walking mausoleum north east of the academy

You'll need to use the finger items to see player summon signs. You might also need to activate the summoning pool statues... I think. You can also just place your summon sign, or use an item to send your sign to any nearby summoning pool.

Spent a good half hour smashing my face into that random invader inside the roundtable hold..

These are the duel summon signs, which have existed for a while. But there's also a random invasion consumable, which I guess only applies to people who use an item on their end to let people in?

Opt-in invasions is kinda weird because I feel like the only thing the system has going for it is the unpredictability. Bloodborne had a similarly weird system that split the difference - trying to summon help would also open you up to invasions at the same time. Is that what this is? I don't think I've found anything that allows me to be invaded, just invade.

I know for a fact you need to activate the summoning pools if you want to be summoned from them. I'd been ignoring a bunch because there is no visual indicator what they did and spent some time last night activating the ones I missed. So if the concept of being summoned into random areas sounds appealing to you then make sure to poke every one you find.

Is the actual "correct" way to get to the Divine tower of caelid to Jump across the outside stones with my horse?

I mean it worked, but it was quite the ordeal

i will say that I know of multiple doors in the round table that open based on stuff happening or game progression, so I think all the gesture messages youre seeing there are fake

I agree on blocking, though I find shields to be much more useful in this game than in Dark Souls 2 or 3. I think it's the combination of long combo strings with few breaks in between, and the lack of a strong DPS option (something like the Sellsword Twinblades in DS3, for instance, which could just shred all opposition in no time) - not having a shield feels like such a liability.

I primarily use a shield for two reasons: one, to get a feel for a boss or enemy's pattern, knowing I can spend the beginning of every new fight playing defensively until I figure out the right timing or strategy. Two, as a safety net for when I botch a dodge. Knowing the worst that can happen is that I'll get staggered and maybe take one hit, as opposed to a full combo to the face, is a much safer prospect.

I'm curious as to who is running a pure Dex build here. I'm about two regions in (about to head to the 2nd legacy dungeon), and while I've found a couple of interesting Dex weapons here and there, I haven't seen anything I feel confident swapping in to replace my Uchi. It might be a bit simple, but it's reliable and quick, and definitely valued when the bleed procs.
