Was it better? Is getting old the reason why new music just doesn't have the same impact?

I'm not just talking about on the radio or buying CD's. Music made a BIG difference in the movies I watched. I still associate many songs with scenes in a movie. Someone mentioned a Black Tarantula and BAM I thought of Beatlejuice right away.

That can still "sorta" be true for disney movies (like "You're welcome from Muana) but hardly ever do the songs have the same impact they used to, at least to me.

Which is sad, really sad, cause it was part of the joy of movies and now it's just...meh.

Hate to break it to you but you're admitting you're old and out of touch here. Music is as relevant as its ever been, you simply don't derive as much enjoyment from the newer stuff. Which is fine, by the way. Not saying you have to try to enjoy the stuff.

You're not seeing the importance because it doesn't resonate with you, doesn't mean it doesn't resonate with anyone else.

Yeah, I kinda figured that. It's why I asked cause I figured if it was everybody, then I would hear that, but I didn't expect it. I like rock and light heavy metal, but really have not seen any new stuff in awhile. Mind you I even liked 50's and 60's music, so it wasn't just music of my lifetime I liked.

Newer music though, just hasn't hit me, I think it's not the music, just my ability to appreciate it, sadly kinda like food (which I also don't enjoy as much).

Getting old sucks, we really should Logan's Run it at 50.

Yeah, I can't see it diminishing or increasing in importance, at least not recently. Arguably it was more important in much older ages when there were fewer forms of entertainment readily available.

Just from the pics I could tell it wasn't my thing.

Could be wrong I guess, I liked some rap back in the day (Mind on my money and my money on my mind....laaaaaid back), Insane in the membrain etc.....but yeah, along with country music rap is the genre I am least likely to enjoy.

I've not really ever liked standard music that much. classic rock, heavy metal, etc, are good but not exactly amazing either. some exceptions like System of a Down.

but now we have Synthwave... that's some great stuff. (though you can say it's 80s in style so maybe it does fit with your view.)

Like others said people tend to stop listening to new music as they get older. Many will stick to the familiar stuff that reminds them of the good times.

I will say that piracy and streaming services have dramatically affected the industry, and not necessarily negatively. Music is cheaper and more accessible than ever so it's easier to reach audiences, but people are less inclined to buy physical media, affecting the attachment people have with their music. A record is something you can hold onto for the rest of your life, hand down to your kids, etc. It's much more personal than an mp3 and harder to take for granted

I think it's becoming harder and harder to innovate. There's so much more exposure to music now due to the internet. More people than ever are "musicians." A lot more people are making music now but a much higher percentage of musicians "back in the day" were formally trained. But there are a lot of incredible musicians now pushing the limits of their instrument (especially drummers) that older players couldn't hold a candle to. That's not to say there weren't some incredible drummers back in the 60s or 70s, though

Right. You were emotionally vunrable, and honestly only half baked at the time those events happened. You credit the music for that, but really it was your brain that was broken, the music just happened to be there. So like a baby duckling you imprinted on it.

This is still going on today with what's playing right now and other broken people with half formed emotions who are still growing up and adjusting who they are.

You can't anymore. No music that you are experincing for the first time is ever going to make a change in who you are or how you feel deep down unless it echoes something that did it to you the first time. That's why pop music targeted at you sounds the same as everything else produced in the last 20 years, it found a way to hit an echo of what formed you, and you vibrate to the harmonic frequency.

I say it again, no music that you experiance for the first time NOW can change you way music did then.

This is both a good thing, as it means all of your emotions are fully baked and your not going to be as easily manipulated, and a bad thing as the range you are capable of experincing has been locked in.

You COULD go on a journy of self discovery, of meditation, drugs, halucinations and mind opening experiances to try to make yourself see the novelty in the world again, to get yourself to FEEL again, people have been doing that for the entire length of recorded history. If you are lucky it'll even work.

Oh I did, he is amazing on drums. The real shocker was that he could sing really well when Gabriel left. The only reason he had Chester Thompson play live was because nobody could sing and play those lines at the same time.

I feel so bad for him now though: Imagine not being able to really even hold sticks anymore. He has really bad health problems and hasnt been able to play for awhile now.

Well that's true but like with everything else, music has been turned into an instant gratification medium for pure profit. People actually taking the time to learn their craft and/or an instrument are a dying breed and with music no longer being taught in school as it once was back in the day, it's hard for people to gain access to musical instruments.

All this proves is that certain aspects of music have changed. Whether or not the music is worse is subjective, and again - if the music doesn't resonate with you, it doesn't mean it doesn't resonate with someone else.

Every generation seems to age out of the next generation's music. It happens. Different than what you like doesn't equate to bad.

I mean, clearly it used to be more important, pop music has gotten more humongous because most people don't care about quality or innovation in their music, they want something catchy to put on in the background. I blame music getting so cheap, no one buys albums anymore because you can just go and look up that 1 song and not even spend money on it, why would you value it?
