I think it's becoming harder and harder to innovate. There's so much more exposure to music now due to the internet. More people than ever are "musicians." A lot more people are making music now but a much higher percentage of musicians "back in the day" were formally trained. But there are a lot of incredible musicians now pushing the limits of their instrument (especially drummers) that older players couldn't hold a candle to.
