Would you...

I've been playing Virtual Villagers Origins 2 and oh boy, it's got a crafting system, no hints (well, to be fair we can see a list of potential results), and it takes time to both gather materials and for the crafting process itself. So after a few days of struggling with wasting a lot of materials and time, I just look up the recipes online.

Honestly, I'd look up recipes online if you stopped at "no recipes."

Especially since it is time consuming to gather materials and make stuff out of them, I would definitely just look at a guide online to not waste my time and to spare myself from unnecessary frustration

If the materials aren't easy to find a lot of, then it's walkthrough time.

I'll be honest.

I probably would not even play the game now.

I would probably not both crafting anything at all. Maybe occasionally throw in a bunch of random materials and get what I get.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the unanimous results so far.

Thinking back on it, back in PS1 days I was okay with this in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, but at least the cooking was more or less instantaneous and the materials can be plentiful.

I would either ignore the crafting system completely if its like BotWs food cooking system or not play the game at all if its integral to the plot.

its either a waste of time if Im trying blindly or no longer a game if Im cheating

I tried in my last Skyrim run to not eat ingredients or look up recipes, thinking that they'd hidden recipe hints contextually all over the place. I was mistaken. This sounds so much worse

This sounds like FFXI, but not only that you could still lose your mats for a failed synthesis if your crafting level wasn't quite high enough for the item you were trying.

yeah, that kind of stuff makes me irrationally annoyed

being punished for playing it naturally is a bad feeling.

i'd put off crafting for as long as possible, and *maybe* go back to it after i beat the game

If something ingame both provided and logged recipes, or you could infer from the missing spots on the log some experiments, I'd be okay with it unless 100% completion was a requirement.

This plus "failure recipes" giving you something and I'd just wing it I think

Otherwise guide all day

When I saw the topic title I thought it was specifically talking about Mega Man Zero 4.

That game had some of the worst crafting I'd ever seen. It didn't help that parts could only be dropped by specific enemies (this is a Mega Man game; there are enemies that like only show up three times in one screen in a single stage in the entire game!) and that they were all named weirdly confusing bullcrap like "EleDeserter" and "C-Hopper" so even if you did look up a guide for a recipe list you would have no clue what gave out parts you needed and where to find them.

Developers should probably know better than to not have a recipe list, but if they don't I don't consider it cheating at all to look it up. This site is about FAQs, why are if you here if you won't use them?

Personally, if it's possible to save scum, I'd probably play around with it to see if I could get anywhere on my own. If it's really that obtuse, or if save scumming is not possible, I'd use a guide. Though really, if the mechanic were that hard to work with, I also might completely ignore it if possible too.

To be fair, only like 2-3 are actually useful. I think I beat the game only using the one that lets you double jump and quick charge.

That made it even worse for me, because I actually tried to invest in the system and to go through all that work just to get stuff that was completely useless was almost insulting. And the only ones that were truly worth using were the ones the game gave absolutely no hints existed.
