Holy crap, I feel bad for him, but that feels extremely exploitative on the show's part.

Yeah I feel like that was a situation where as soon as he said something they should have said "yeah look, we needed to know this sooner, sorry" and put in the alternate. Maybe told him he could be on 43, medically pending.

I could feasibly see anyone on this tribe being voted out for various reasons.

and for the most part I enjoyed the episode, and I think it could've been explained better but I liked the idea of the first advantage, you want to vote people out so your thing gets stronger, but you can't just do that because they have the same info as you.

Also, Hai smearing on the blood, like dude, you just needed some cuts, not a secret murder

I wish they hadn't shown Tori finding the idol in one of the preview shots, because it took all suspense out of the vote, unless they somehow managed to turn it back to Rocksroy.

Finally just got to see it since I'm on vacation.

Yeah, that's what I had thought was the case. Which is why I figured it was Zach. I figured he was either going to be really entertaining or rather obnoxious.

Jackson having to leave was sad because I rather enjoyed how he told his story. And I'm guessing there wasn't an alternate and they couldn't make the decision right away.

Also Rocksroy has a hot wife.

From what I've heard, Jackson didn't tell them about his condition until after the alternates left. Which makes me both think it was intentional and that makes me lose any sympathy I had for him.

This is why he should have told them much earlier, because he then wouldn't have been cast until next year. "Get off it and you're on." I do not understand why he was in a rush to be cast. He said he's 48 y/o, so maybe his idea was before turning 50? Could be that he thought his body couldn't take it after a certain age, given what he's been through.

I can't believe they haven't learned not to send the alternates home until after the official start yet. Twice in the past there have been literal last-minute dropouts resulting in one uneven cast and another gender-imbalanced one.

There was also at least one instance where they decided to expand the cast size on-location and threw in two alternates without replacing anybody.

How did they handle alternates in SJDS anyway? Did they have a M/M, M/F, and F/F pair? Because if they didn't have a F/F alternate pair, it wouldn't matter how early So and her sister dropped out, they were never going to be able to replace them in the first place.

I'm guessing so, because they had a male hero, male villain, female hero and female villain backed up for HvV. I know the villains were Ace and Natalie B.

I think those two were the only alternates and that they'd do some cast gymnastics (like they actually did when Tom and Stephenie threatened to quit because they were on a tribe with three Black Widows) if someone had to drop out.

The rumor is that Russell replaced Shane or Penner, and Ace was the alternate over either of them? That's got to be one of the more baffling casting choices I've seen.

Also, if the rumors are true, they didn't have a back up for both tribes in DvG, since the claim is that Cirie's son Jared was going to be cast as a Goliath, and when he dropped out they added Davie and switched Alec to the Goliath tribe. So who knows how they plan this out?

The alternates know, especially on an All-Star season, that there's like a 99% chance that they're just going to turn around and go home, and so in this case they probably gave it to someone like Ace who'd be happy with a 1% chance to get to play again over a Penner or a Shane who would've been like "don't waste my time with that shit."

The exact order of events for the fifth male villain casting is as follows:
-Rob, Coach, Tyson, Randy and Penner as cast as the male villains pre-Samoa.
-Samoa starts and production immediately knows that no matter what happens they are going to want Russell back. Of the five, they cut Penner. My guess is that because Rob represents the classic/golden age era while Coach, Randy and Tyson are all from the three most recent seasons, so Penner gets the boot for falling in the middle.
-As Samoa goes on, production begins to question whether Russell would want to immediately play again with very little break, especially considering how hard he's going at it. Rather than call Penner back, they cast Shane, who had been on the shortlist for Micronesia but was one of the last cuts when they changed it from a full All-Star cast to Fans vs. Favorites.
-Samoa wraps up, they ask Russell if he wants to play HvV and are legitimately surprised when he accepts, so they tell Shane sorry.

mixed feelings about the premiere, but i love lydia and i am hoping for her to go very far

I'm hoping for no reward challenges this season so Lydia can be the first person to make the merge without ever competing in a challenge. I have no idea how she sat out over Daniel and his dislocated shoulder, unless he was really trying to downplay it so they wouldn't vote him out over it.

Two reasons. One, Daniel is downplaying it (was that in a secret scene?) and two, Daniel is good at puzzles. They put him on the puzzle with Jenny because those two were the ones who knew what they were talking about with the triangles.

Bbcan has been hilarious and entertaining this week, and some consider it the worst hoh in bbcan history

He told someone he was going to nom them, and didn't. Twice. He broke up all his alliances, qnd nommed 2 of his alliances (plural) members and everyone is distancing from him despite being one of the most shielded players before his hoh. The house is in total disarray and the predix is him being voted out next week and then the following hoh is when the smoke clears and we know who will be with who. Got all 1s from the panel on his hoh week on the rhap stock watch but it's been so entertaining.

This is the good big brother but waiting for the Twists to screw it up

I'm planning to catch up if people tell me I should. I'm still at my parents' and they only have one TV. My only other option is my phone and I don't like that idea.

BBCan is back? Oh. That sounds like a Devin or Frenchie level disaster. I don't know how to watch it in my current circumstance since my usual outlets require my desktop rig. (I should get a new laptop...)

That Hai vegan scene was really good. It was humanizing without feeling forced. Omars Islam scene felt okay too, but it felt more forced, rather than natural.

Great episode. Gave us a coherent strategic narrative while focusing on character moments that were particularly fascinating. Hai eating meat was the humanizing scene we needed. But we got a good picture of who a lot of people are and no focus at all on advantages - except for one that contributed to character stuff (Mike finding an idol, forgetting where it was, and Daniel then convincing him to not initiate the phrases was all epic).

This is a good cast. I can name all but one of them now. The other one is something like Chantelle, I think? Easily had the least so far, once Lydia had the challenge win. The mostly even edit is nice.

Beyond the Edge was so stupid and pointless, holy shit.

Good to know. I probably won't watch it.

I agree with all of this. I really liked this episode and have really warmed up to this cast after being pretty lukewarm on them after the premier.

So did Taku forget that the caller needed to be someone good at puzzles?

Also, I'm surprised that they all managed to spell Marya's name right, when it's an odd spelling and we've seen people misspell easier to spell names in All-Star seasons (like everyone who voted "Aubrey").

this was a much better episode than the premiere, oddly enough, despite being only an hour long. felt like there was more clarity about tribe dynamics and i feel like i pretty much know everyone so far. found myself liking some people i didn't in the premiere and vice versa, which is a good thing
