I don't really mind. Lydia just didn't bring a whole lot to the season. Her and Lindsay could both go and I wouldn't feel like anything was lost.

I'm not particularly disappointed but up until the final pre-tribal scene I wouldn't have even remotely expected Lydia. For an hour and 45 minutes I really thought this was the farewell to either Jonathan or Tori with a very slight chance of Chanelle. Then when Chanelle got safety and Tori won immunity, I thought for sure it was Jonathan. Even once Maryanne and Lydia got brought into the mix I thought it was more likely to be Maryanne.

Lydia wasn't a consideration, and I thought Omar wouldn't get his way and go on a warpath next week. How wrong I was!

Anyway, this is a pretty good F3+Jury. Nobody that I actively dislike, and everyone but Lindsay has something at least remotely resembling a story arc so far. Plus most of the early boots were either actively bad or whatever.

Jackson - Hid something essential from production. Not nice.
Zach - We've seen this guy play before.
Marya - Whatever
Jenny - She had a lot of potential, but the only thing I really recall is "My tribe aren't puzzle people."
Swati - Incredible self-implosion. I like the way she pieces things together, but her conflicting promises turned her into a beautiful disater.
Daniel - Glorious trainwreck. Like the amount of self-sabotage this guy engages in is incredible.
Lydia - She was under-edited given how many other people there are but what we saw was great.

Agree that Lindsay's the only dud who's still around. Rocksroy isn't quite a dud, but he's not adding as much as some of the others. Overall, I think this cast clicks more as a whole than S41's (and that had a lot of good people).

Cool I'm done. Twist got rid of my #1.

Tori's gotten real insufferable with her hate on Rocksroy because he "doesn't play the game". It was even worse this episode with how likable they made Rockroy tonight.

And they didn't fix the hourglass at all. Rocksroy would've been an idiot to not smash it.

Honestly, Queen Sydney and Lydia couldn't be any more different.

Queen Sydney is a narcissist who loves her own reflection more than any guy she's dated. She has a complex that makes her think everybody else is jealous of her, because she's beautiful and a lawyer, and consistently brags so they remember how great she is. She is the personification of vanity, and I wonder if that is as a guise to cover her insecurities. She's said Russell Hantz is her second-favorite Survivor player ever... after herself. Sydney is an absolutely fascinating human being.

Lydia is an introverted geek who has struggled with her image due to mistreatment from the "cool kidz" types (including being ignored by people like Sydney). Lydia signifies innocence, in part due to her youth and naivete, and she reeks of someone still trying to figure life out for herself. I can relate to her a lot and that's why I appreciate her.

Sydney was more screwed by the twist since she had nowhere to hide once something wholly unexpected happened. Lydia at least knew there'd be a "decision" on Exile as opposed to a trinket.

Also Rocksroy is old school so he wanted to "express his loyalty" or w/e and threw out a hinky vote for Lynze or something. I don't know if he's aware who all is in his alliance... and I also don't know why Romeo was left out of that, because Rocksroy is going to be "Ika Strong" with Drea and Romeo (he hates Tori, of course).

The hourglass has definitely claimed two of my favorites from their respective seasons. Horrible twist, hopefully it won't be brought back now that people know about it and can strategize around it. It's just unfair to players - I'd hate it even if it hadn't resulted in two of my favorites going in back to back seasons.

Honestly, I don't mind losing Lydia. She was the second-least relevant character at the merge, after Lindsay. I'd like to see Hai, Romeo or Omar eliminated early, but it's not like Lydia lit my world on fire.

She was only irrelevant because they gave her a trash edit. And that's likely because they knew she was screwed by the Hourglass so they didn't want everyone getting attached to her. Watch her exit interview, she's an actual gem.

That's why I was pretty sure Lydia was going once they brought her name up last night. The person who was getting screwed by the hourglass was way more likely to be someone who got purpled rather than a fan favorite like Jonathan or Maryanne.

Absolutely. I saw it way before that though. Right when Jonathan carried her and the others to that win I'm like. Okay, episode is as predictable as possible. Hourglass gets smashed, they are no longer safe and Lydia goes home.

Most people would be thinking, oh no! Jonathan would be the target!

Well that would make too much sense and would require the contestants not to be idiots. So byebye Lydia. I can't believe Omar was able to swing that away from BOTH Jon and Maryanne.

I blame Mike for instantly being googoo eye'd for Jon's manly man muscles.

The thing that sucks the most is like, she literally just needed to survive this bullshit twist and she was like a lock for at least top 7 or 6 because of being non threatning.

Yeah. Both Lydia and Lindsay got decent edits...they're just not particularly interesting. Now, I definitely agree that it sucks for Lydia's edit to boil down to being Hai's sidepiece (seriously, how many times did we need to see him commenting on situations that directly impacted Lydia?) but she just didn't come across all that great on television. Sydney got screwed by the hourglass last season and she was given one of the biggest edits for her tribe.

There are a few points I want to make here...

1. They can't exactly give a purple edit to He-Man. Like... the guy is a literal superhero. You can't NOT notice him, and him soloing team challenges wasn't exactly something they could hide. They HAVE to show challenges and who wins them. Jonathan managing three other people at once while crushing shit was so remarkable that they had no choice. He would get a strong edit even if he was screwed by the hourglass. Casual stangirls love guys like him at first sight. It's warranted this time (much like with Malcolm, who isn't even the same archetype).
2. Lydia wasn't purpled. She got an intro package - what with regarding her body image and learning to accept that - and a few confessionals with information about her. The editors definitely held back some with her because they didn't want her to become a fan favorite, because that would lead the casuals to condemn the hourglass twist. Which they probably are anyway. But there's a difference between her MOR edit and being purpled. I think if she didn't get hourgassed, she'd have gotten a strong edit and made it deep for the reasons Ermine stated.
3. It doesn't matter who went home with this twist, it's still incorrigible. It was a MASSIVE improvement that Jeff told them "The person on Exile gets to make a game-changing decision" which led Drea to use her oracle powers to figure it out - why he didn't do that in S41 is beyond me. But... Thank You, Danny McCray. Like seriously. Without Danny's rant calling Probst a liar, I don't think he changes as much as he did. Even so, get rid of this shit for good, and make immunity, well... immunity. And it's not like there was an actual decision there. Make there be more serious ramifications if the hourglass gets smashed.
4. Lydia's demise was partially self-inflicted, by stating that she'd prefer to vote Jonathan out over Maryanne. Should have just said Maryanne and, knowing what Omar was gonna do, split the vote and pile the rest on Jonathan. I think it was her age and naivete that got the better of her. The bullshit twist definitely was the biggest factor, though, because without it, they just pile the votes on Chanelle and nothing of value is lost. Omar is justifiably mad at her for lying to him about risking her vote. I don't know why Chanelle doesn't seem to understand that lie is why nobody trusts her.

It's fascinating to dissect and I am gonna need to rewatch it.

I will say...while the hourglass is inherently bullshit...I wouldn't mind seeing more team immunity challenges post-merge. It could switch up the game to have a few rounds where the cast is randomly divided and half of them are safe (yet still get to vote, so it's not some Michelle Yi bullshit).

Yup and I've been arguing this with other people and they just don't get it. Yeah sure maybe she could have talked better to him but uh... I highly doubt there was ANYTHING she could say that would have changed his mind on targeting her.

Yeah, Omar was trying to find some way to throw Lydia under the bus, but she helped him by throwing Jonathan's name out and letting Omar say that Lydia betrayed the 8 (that never even voted together before, lol). I'm not sure if Omar could've flipped Hai and Mike had Lydia targeted Maryanne the entire time.

This is why Omar was player of the week.

I often say "Don't call your shot if you don't have any bullets." Omar wanted to call a shot on Lydia and went looking for the bullet to do so. Lydia just handed it to him. If she stood firm on Maryanne and told Hai and Drea that Omar was fishing for ammo to turn the 8 against itself, then Omar's the bad guy, and one of his friends pays for it since he's immune.

Omar managing to pull that off is incredible, really. But part of why he managed to do it was Lydia being naive. So while she couldn't shift Omar's target off of her, she could have arranged it so Omar's move didn't work.

It's Survivor day. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it'll be one to celebrate.
