I think a big part of it is how the game presented them as if there were some kind of deeper mystery to them. Like with the narration and the pacing. At least that's how I personally remember it anyway.

The deeper mystery is that Misham is the dude responsible for Phoenix losing his badge and he's been living in guilt about it ever since.

The Herlock Sholmes "Logic and Reasoning Spectacular"

Trucy Wright

The Great Ace Attorney 2 - The first game is the questions arc, and the second game is the answers arc. As a result, GAA2 is full of huge moments as the mysteries are unraveled. Plus, they may have had to cram a ton of stuff into this game if it was originally supposed to be a trilogy but got truncated to two games. The third case in particular is incredible. I have some issues with how the finale is handled, but it's a wild ride overall.

Turnabout Reclaimed (5-6)
Justice for All

Ace Attorney Investigations 2 - The fact that this game was never released in English has spurred me to buy everything Ace Attorney I can to support the series. As a game, it's an improvement over the original in just about every way. They craft a deeply personal story for Edgeworth, and many of the new characters are very well done. I really liked how they set the villains against each other toward the end. It's something we haven't seen from the series before, so it was interesting to follow.

Rayfa Padma Khura'in
The Mood Matrix
The Adventure of the Runaway Room (G1-3)
Athena Cykes

Armie Buff - Ah, good ol' Sarge. I was legitimately surprised when she turned out to be a girl. I loved the interactions between Apollo, Dhurke, and Armie. It was really touching slowly uncovering her backstory and convincing her to come out of hiding. It was a triumph for Apollo as a character, too, because he's not exactly a people person.

Furio Tigre
G2-4's Dance of Deduction
Barok van Zieks
Gregory Edgeworth
Enoch Drebber

Edgeworth's Secret Steel Samurai Fanboyism - It's like someone looked at that throwaway line at the end of 1-3 where Edgeworth tells Powers he's a big fan (which Phoenix assumes is just a lie to be civil) and wondered, "What if he actually was?" It's a hilarious gag because it's so unexpected from someone like him. Edgeworth being utterly offended by the Plumed Princess in Spirit of Justice was great.

The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story (G1-5)
Punished Apollo

Mael Stronghart - This writeup will take exactly...17 seconds to read. Well, maybe not, but I do enjoy that running gag. It does feel pretty obvious early on that he'll eventually become a bad guy, but I thought he was a well done mastermind type of character. I liked all the new animations that accompanied the heel reveal, too.

Believe me, any comic relief I may provide is entirely unintentional.

Tobias Gregson - The man with the bottomless fish and chips, I like how they use him as a foil to Sholmes. I enjoyed his character arc, how he always acted standoffish and hardened toward Ryunosuke and company, but they gradually started to soften him and win him over. And then they killed him. Seriously, it might be the most unexpected death in the series for me aside from Mia.

Ini & Mimi Miney
Sebastian Debeste
Presenting Profiles
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Phoenix Wright
3-1 Phoenix's Shirt and What It Really Stands For

Yuri Cosmos - It's difficult for a single witness to carry an entire trial day, but Cosmos manages it because he's almost three characters in one. You've got the director of the Cosmos Space Center with an inflated sense of self-importance; you've got the commander of the HAT-1 and HAT-2 missions who genuinely cares for his men; and you've got the guy who's legitimately terrified of the Phantom sabotaging the mission. Peeling back the layers of the Cosmos onion is really fun because of that.

THE MURDER WEAPON WAS UDON DOUGH
Bonny and Betty de Famme
Olive Green
Edgeworth's Cravat
Dahlia's Constipation
The Fact That Phoenix Once Tipped a Cow
Peace, Love, and Understanding
Klavier Gavin

The Adventure of the Blossoming Attorney (G2-1) - This is just a fun intro case. They don't try to do too much with it (other than unceremoniously killing off a great villain), and getting to play as Ryutaro is a blast. I also liked how quickly Auchi turned into a complete joke character, just like every other Payne after the first time they lose!

Ace Attorney Stage Plays
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

Search ~ Core 2002 - I'm not a huge fan of this one compared to other Core themes. I prefer In the Midst more in terms of JFA investigation themes, and it's also the true Matt Engarde theme in my book! I was kind of stunned to learn people associate Core more with Engarde than In the Midst!

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

Nahyuta Sahdmadhi - Say it with me: Let it go, and move on. It's easy to pick the flaws in the character, so let's talk about something I like about him. One of my favorite running gags in Spirit of Justice was Nahyuta's ability to become an expert in a random subject overnight. Him schooling Blackquill on rakugo in 6-4 was legitimately hilarious.

No Game No Life Cornered Remix
Raiten Menimemo
Apollo's Backstories
Phoenix Eating the Bottle of Poison

Wesley Stickler - I shouldn't like this guy, but I kinda do. He's got such an ugly creeper face, but he also has some funny animations. I like the concept of a "man of science" being mesmerized by magic, even when it results in panty snatching. I like that he actually did attempt to stop the crime, even if it wasn't as full of composure as he claims. At the same time, I'm glad he'll never be brought back...!

Shouting "Objection!" into the system's mic
Logic Chess

Angel Starr - You ordered the squid wheels, right? I loved the lunchbox gag, even if it turned out to be an annoyance trying to get the Platinum on Ace Attorney Trilogy because I accidentally missed one my first time through and had to redo 1-5 until I got the right one. I also like that Angel has heterochromia, but as a witness, she's honestly pretty annoying because this part drags on too long. Remember how I said before how difficult it is for a single witness to carry an entire trial day? This is a prime example of how to do it wrong.

Cross-Examination ~ Allegro 2004 - The king of the cross-examination themes. It's the perfect blend of dramatic stakes without being too frenetic. Does anyone else have a certain moment you associate with an AA song? For me, I associate this song with the final Luke Atmey testimony.

Simon Keyes - The epitome of obfuscating stupidity, and as such, it's hard to talk about this guy without spoilers. I'm not sure what the writers want you to think of him though. He has a tragic backstory, but it's presented in such a way that I don't think you're meant to feel sorry for him. He also feels like the lesser of evils despite being the mastermind and final confrontation. Either way, he's a worthy opponent for Edgeworth.

The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro (G2-2) - To be honest, I was initially a little disappointed when GAA2's first full case was a flashback to right after G1-4. I was hoping for things to move forward, but once we got into the meat of the case, I really got into it. Shamspeare is a great villain, Olive Green is a tragic and sympathetic character, and all hail Quinby Altamont.

Shelly de Killer's Sweating Props That Look Suspiciously Like Him - Whether it's the walkie-talkie or the ice cream cone, it's a clever way to give a sense of expression to an otherwise deadpan, emotionless character. Also, how did Edgeworth not recognize the Shelly logo on his clothes on E2-1?

Moe's Fresh Prince Reference
The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro (G1-4)
Multiple Witnesses Mechanic
Drew Misham's Paintings

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Sometimes I wonder what it would've been like if we had gotten the game that the original reveal trailer. It really would've been a versus game! As it stands, it's a fun team-up that I think I appreciate more now that I've played some Layton games. It might have the best soundtrack in the series, too.

Case 1s That Tease Dynamics in the Final Case
The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)

Dee Vasquez - I feel like some people think she's boring, but I have a great appreciation for characters who do deadpan well. She's also the original "awkward silence" character as she creates a number of them by no-selling all of Phoenix's questions. She also instigated Edgeworth's face turn, so she deserves credit for that.

Soseki Natsume
Save Scumming
Kristoph's Demon Hand

Benjamin Woodman - I actually find him fairly fascinating as a character. He uses Trilo to vent his repressed and otherwise inexpressible frustrations. I've seen people talk about how creepy it is for him to pursue Regina, but I don't think he actually cares about her. I think he just uses Trilo to troll Max because he hates him so much. When you ask Benjamin himself, he openly says he doesn't like Regina that much.

I'm not sure I like you wagging your finger at me as though I were some hoser!

The First Turnabout (1-1) - This is a difficult case to judge relative to others in the series because it's so short. Even if you try to get every possible piece of dialogue (and 1-1 puts virtually no effort into its press dialogue because you're technically not supposed to know how to do it yet), it won't run you more than 30 minutes. For such a short case, it's got a lot of great one-liners and zingers.

Ace Attorney Stage Plays
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Search ~ Core 2002
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi

Great Ace Attorney Character Designs - The GAA team has talked about this. Since GAA is a period piece (even if a historically inaccurate one, but then again, the series exists in a parallel world anyway), they didn't think it'd be appropriate to give them the wacky designs and hairstyles of the main series, which technically take place in the future, even though we're already past the timeline of the original trilogy.

Showing Vital Evidence to the Prime Suspect - In Phoenix's case, it's literally a rookie move because he (mostly) learns his lesson after the first game. Of course, I would assume anyone who gets tasered would try extra hard never to do the thing that got them tasered ever again!

Between the whippings and the coffee throwing I don't think anyone has caught up to Phoenix there. Blackquill doesn't really assault anyone and I don't think Nahyuta does the bead thing nearly as often as Franzy's whipping

Edit: Yes there's also out of court but I don't think it happens enough out of court to change the count significantly

Rank Phoenix x Iris

Phoenix spends the case so obviously concerned for her (he even gives Edgeworth his badge!), and even after he gradually learns of her crimes, he still see the same light in her from years ago.

The series rarely made me feel any real emotion. The end of 3-5 where you get the double finger point followed by Phoenix telling Iris he's still believed in her all this time is the emotional high point of the entire series and it's not particularly close.

Phoenix x Iris forever bring Iris back in AA7.

List of Phoenix getting assaulted:

1. Hit by Frank Sahwit's toupee
2. Punched by Redd White
3. Tasered by von Karma
4. Whipped unconscious by Franziska at least once
5. Attacked by Money (while having his badge stolen) and nearly attacked by a tiger twice
6. Scalded by hot coffee at least twice
7. Slapped unconscious by Pearl
8. Punched by Tigre and Armstrong
9. Hit by Pal Meraktis's car
10. Hit by Orla's volleyball

I think that's it. He manages to survive SoJ without getting assaulted (aside from Nahyuta's bead thing).

I set my ATM card's number to "0001" because I'm number one!

Phoenix Wright - He's still my favorite character in the series and probably always will be. There's nothing I can say about him that you haven't probably haven't already heard. I'm just a sucker for the guy who never gives up, no matter what, and nobody does that better than Phoenix Wright.

Trials & Tribulations
Phoenix and Edgeworth's Dynamic
The Hair Flip
Maya Fey
Godot
Dual Destinies

Turnabout Revolution (6-5) - Man, what a case. I honestly hope the series never tries to top this one in terms of scale and especially length because I don't think it could live up to what 6-5 did. I mentioned this earlier in the topic, but to give this case to Apollo instead of Phoenix took some real guts. Then the way they set up his reconciliation with Dhurke just to deliver the ultimate gut punch later was so well done. It's not a perfect case, but they finally gave Apollo the epic case leading role he deserved.

I read all of the protagonist's dialogue when I play Ace Attorney, and there's only one line that has the potential to get me choked up when I read it, even after all these years and replays. "You really are the person I always thought you were." The main reason I'd have been okay with Phoenix's story ending there is because he'd have been able to ride off into the sunset with Iris. It's not too late to bring her back though. Trucy still needs a Mama...!

The Return of the Great Departed Soul (G2-3) - What a great case. I love the dynamic between van Zieks and Harebrayne. I like the ethical dilemma the game puts Ryunosuke in between pursuing the truth and respecting his client's wishes. Enoch Drebber is a fantastic villain, and I love the twist at the end with the Professor. It's a fantastic jury, too, mostly because they don't let them take over the case by being too involved.

Ladders vs. Stepladders

Luke Atmey's Final Testimony - I love this as a concept, even if it's easy to cheese it through save scumming. It's the longest testimony in the series, and it demonstrates that Luke Atmey's Ace Detective persona isn't all bluster. It tests your attention to detail because there's only one mistake to catch, and the mistake isn't that what Atmey said was wrong. It's that he theoretically shouldn't have known about it if he's not the culprit. So good.

G2-3's Second Dance of Deduction - There's nothing elementary about believing that a bomb is an anti-gravity device, but that's neither here nor there! This is the most Sholmes Dance of Deduction of all because it's just so utterly absurd every step of the way, but that's part of the charm.

Bloody Tears - If you ever wanted a prime example of "dude Godot is just cool," this one is it. Even though it's clearly his opened wound, Godot spins it as his tears since he can't see red. After all, the only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over. I'll never be able to say anything as cool as that.

Kazuma Asogi - I find him difficult to evaluate as a character because his arc is all over the place. He's got a lot of potential early on when he's Ryunosuke's best friend with a dream of studying law in England, but then they unceremoniously kick him out of the story for the rest of GAA1 and most of GAA2. I'm not sure how I feel about him as a prosecutor, but man, that new theme is super good.

I Can't Defeat Tree Man

Sister Bikini - She's a top tier Ace Attorney witness, especially in winter. Even though she could have easily lied to protect Iris, Bikini tells the truth to the best of her ability. I like witnesses like her because it's not about exposing lies, but it's someone who didn't see what they think they saw. She also has hilarious interactions with just about every character in 3-5.

Missile - If Missile's only appearance had been as one of Gumshoe's Secret Weapons who ate all of Larry's Samurai Dogs, that would have been enough. It makes me happy they brought him back a couple of times in the AAI games, and he actually made meaningful contributions toward solving those cases. Secret Weapon indeed.

Sad Monk - Blackquill is generally uncreative when it comes to nicknames, but this one feels like a stretch. I get what he's going for here, but eh, it doesn't do anything for me.

Luke Atmey coming up with that 12 part testimony effectively on the spot definitely shows how capable he really is.

kazuma's theme original is probably better than its remix, though yeah the revival version is great too - really merited the milking.
