still got my app for tue.

first it's not allowed, now it's 'strongly recommended', still no pfz available. do i risk death for my politician's incompetence?

What's it going to be? Loyalty to your country, or loyalty to yourself? Your country, or your old mentor? The mission, or your beliefs? Your duty to your unit, or your personal feelings? Look at how much you've lost already! What kind of country deserves this much loyalty, Snake?

decide my fate potd.

btw seems to be mostly women dying from the blood clots and i am a boy

from what i heard of the blood clot shit, vaccinated and unvaccinated risk of death to blood clot was the same

is there an actual statistical correlation here showing being vaccinated increases chance of death via blood clots to a statistically significant level, or are they just seeing a couple people died and pinning it entirely on the vaccine

thnx! damn, that's a bummer. still, the odds are so insanely low as to be negligible. I'm fairly certain people find out about awful allergies they have to a variety of foods with quite a lot of frequency, and a variety of outcomes including death. Anyhow, things like bathtubs and cows are more dangerous. I'd be far more concerned about COVID as opposed to the vaccine.

this is the most statistically sound argument antivaxxers have been able to latch onto, out of every other condition out there

and it's still, at worst, one in a million

covid is much higher than one in a million, afaik its one in a hundred or two hundred depending on demographic, right

supposedly covid itself already gives high chances of things like blood clots, so protecting yourself from covid, even with a tiny chance of that, is statistically worth it

(thing with covid is that it can attack cells that we're not really used to having attacked, including things like capillaries and blood vessels, and it's also not entirely understood all of the negative effects it can have.)

the cons to getting covid are extremely high:
- turns you into a coronavirus factory, very likely spreading it to others (allowing the chain to continue)
- can allow it to mutate within you or others
- can definitely kill you outright or otherwise permanently damage you
pros: essentially none

the cons to the vaccine:
- might have an insignificant chance of dangerous side effects
pros: the reverse of all of the covid cons

worldwide more like 1 in 50 (maybe 1 in 60 in USA)

though the delta variant seems like it might be less deadly, since cases are spiking again but deaths are not.

Delta variant is just as lethal but there are a few factors making less people die.

First, alot of the very high risk people to die, already have.
Second, the main cause of death, a high percentage of deaths at least, was lack of resources/medical facilities. That is more under control now. The places with the highest death rates had the least amount of resources.

Third, much like the first, most of the people who are high risk have already gotten the vaccine, so the people contracting the Delta variant are generally not nearly as high risk and likely to die from it.

The number of deaths was always very low for those under 40 without diabetes/high blood pressure/immune compromises etc. Most people who were at high risk of death have either A: croaked or B: gotten the vaccine. While there are still tons of unvaccinated people, which is causing the delta variant to spread like crazy, most won't die from it now.

Deaths are starting to creep up. Not as strongly as case numbers are (yesterday's 7-day daily case average was 110,000, compared to 20,000 a month prior, while yesterday's death average was 516, compared to 205 a month prior), but a delay is to be expected because it tends not to kill people immediately after diagnosis. I doubt deaths will end up spiking as hard as cases do, in the long run, but that's mostly because some of those cases are vaccinated people that are vastly less likely to die. I don't think it indicates much about Delta's deadliness.

yeah, it's not enough to actually get to "delta is definitely less deadly", but there are noticeably fewer deaths now in this current wave. some other possible reasons have been posted by others.

in europe in particular, you can see a very clear pattern of three waves (and as I want to describe this I find that johns hopkins has limited their scale to only past month now? so I can't see this data anymore):

(just going from memory)
early/mid 2020: high cases, high deaths
late 2020/early 2021: high cases, medium deaths
mid 2021: high cases, low deaths

the two scales are not the same, so you can't compare them directly, but looking at the relative size of each wave, the number of additional deaths for this current wave is basically zero compared to the others.

as for why that is, who knows.

I'm amazed Australia have done so well with the chinese fever, they dont mess around, they've hit the nail on the head with the whole contact tracing thing.

It took forever for my mum to get permission to fly out of Melbourne to head to Germany to attend my Grandmothers funeral.
She didn't know if and when she would be allowed back into the country, but once she returned she had a 2 week quarantine period that she had to pay for.

It does, though you'll typically use different hops for other grains than you would with barley, based on which ones best complement the flavour of the grains used.

as for why that is, who knows.

Hospitals are better prepared (both in terms of procedures and equipment), testing infrastructure has improved enough to allow earlier detection of infections, masks have become widespread (even if the virus gets past the mask, having a lower initial viral load improves the prognosis)... More recently, vaccines have been quite thoroughly demonstrated to dramatically reduce the severity of any breakthrough infections, which is making a huge difference in the current wave. It's a number of factors, really.

Yep, that's about what I was expecting. The first wave was a desperate scramble to catch up and figure out how to save patients with far too few resources, so mortality was much higher, but cases numbers stayed fairly low because everything was locked down hard and almost everyone was being super careful. By the second, infrastructure and strategies were in place to save patients, but restrictions had relaxed and people were getting more complacent/frustrated, so case numbers exploded. For the third, restrictions are even more relaxed and people are even more complacent/frustrated, driving cases up, but vaccines are widespread, dramatically reducing mortality rate. If you added a chart of vaccination rate to that comparison, I believe you'd see that number climb as the second wave shrank.

As scary as they sound, that's what a lot of these blood clotting issues amount to. They're serious enough that they do warrant a hospital visit, but it's exceedingly rare for them to be genuinely dangerous or beyond treatment. They're really not bad enough to warrant avoiding the vaccine, even if you do end up being unlucky enough to have them happen at all.
