the storyline of Stannis Baratheon. Unflinchingly dark, filled with a unique complexity of honor and a certain lust for power... the show fell off without Stannis on it. Man, what an intriguing character. I think I really overlooked just how fantastic his story was, from start to finish.

Stannis is the Mannis, but I thought the show really ruined him once they moved past the books. A few good men or whatever took him out, meh

Good topic.

I think the show fell off for some pretty obvious reasons beyond him, though. Sadly.

Yeah, I guess we're fortunate that there wasn't too much of him past that point. I know the odds are slim, but I greatly look forward to seeing Stannis' story in the books. In all honesty, I understand that that might be the role he has to play with Jon's ascension, but I'd live to get a little more meat of the bone beforehand.

I think they had made some poor decisions early on for simplicity's sake that ended up biting them in the ass. You combine that with shortening season length... yeah, there are institutional problems with the last couple seasons, for sure.

Still, I do love the show, and I am a "journey over destination" person, by and large.

Watchmen certainly isn't a bad choice! I probably will rewatch it once a little more time has passed since its ending.

I used to have a similar mindset about characters I didn't like personally, but now I kind of have reached this point that well-written characters I hate challenge me, and I appreciate that experience.

i thought stannis was very believable and an important character to have in order to fill out the world, even if he didn't really carry the heavy charisma normally required of a main character/winner

Oh, for sure. But I tend to blame that on the seduction of Melisandre, more than anything. He is just too easily swayed by her, in the end. Without my boy Davos there to right the ship, he was doomed to succumb to her manipulations.

Yeah, he definitely doesn't have charisma, but something about his insight into Jon Snow and his respect for him really inspired confidence in me that he was, in this terribly dark and broken world, a better leader than most. Which is insane, I realize, when I take a step back and really examine things. That's a testament to the writing, I guess!

I feel like a lot of what I liked from early GoT was that characters didn't feel like they filled a role. Most everyone had issues (Starks felt like the only 'good' characters. Like, even Jorah was a perv), and everyone had their own agenda, and the characters who were deemed to be 'the' hero... died.

Into season 6 and a lot of final roles were chosen and expectations were set and intrigue largely disappeared.

Stannis was always so good because he wasn't a Stark but he was opposed to the Lannisters and that made him such an interesting viewpoint. Davos and his daughter brought him some humanity that wouldn't have been there otherwise and made him compelling.

I began to loath the character for what he did to Renly, the scene you mentioned just let me tell some people "I told you so." Such a great dislikable character, I only hope the books finish his story in a better way than the show did.

You are just a butthurt baby
With the way this show got ruined, posting something negative about it is nothing out of the ordinary. Stannis behind a off-screen death was one of the first signs of this show going downhill

You wanted a serious discussion? good for you. But sometimes some people just want to post their opinion and if it's too negative this is only because they got hurt by it. If you have zero tolerance for this then you need to grow the fuck up

I don't know if it's bad stortelling per se, but it is maybe bad direction if there isn't a more reasonable explanation for not having that visual.

Unless that reason is that we didn't see a body, so he isn't dead. GoT Season 9: Stannis Returns.

Stannis is fantastic.

Rewatching the show actually made me think on several occasions that the show writers failed to understand the complexity of his character. I'd have to research on the exact details, but a lot of time they made Melisandre take decisions he took, where she told him to do something instead of himself insisting on it. IIRC the burning of Selyse's brother (father in books) was also for his misbeliefs and not for the treason and that deranges Stannis' views and principles. Stannis is more desperate for Melisandre's help in the book rather than actually caring too much for her religion. Among other things, it hurts the relationship between him and Davos.

Season 3's ending in particular soured me on his handling.
Instead of preparing to execute Davos himself and stopping because he realizes he's forgotten what it means to be a king.
He instead tries to let his men execute Davos and has to be stopped by Melisandre of all people.

I hated how they did show Stannis lol, but that's probably just salt because he's so radically different from his book version and it seemed like the writers didn't understand a single thing of what he's about (in the books). Dillane did the best he could with what he was given, though.

Stannis was boring as shit. Never understood the hype. They could have put a potato in his place and everyone could have said how much they respect him and not much would have changed. Without Davos standing beside him being great and constantly talking about how honorable, just, and strong convictions he has you would have never known! What is his like second scene? Being manipulated like a weak-willed loser with no strong convictions into breaking his vows to his wife and cheat on her, then instead of facing Renly in battle he does the most underhanded, cowardly, non-honorable, totally against his previously established strong convictions backstab in the world using demon magic. He's just yet another generic evil bald dude lusting for power the only difference is Davos keeps assuring us he's got all this amazing character strengths that just aren't present in the actual text/show at all. Show us don't tell us. He had conviction enough in the Seven to cut off dudes fingers but throws it all away in two seconds like a flip-flopping jellyfish. Every scene more interesting people talk around him while hes just quiet looking like hes about to cry. Stannis did everything he didnt want to do and still lost. Im glad he got murdered by someone with actual honor who never wavered. But even that was unsatisfying.
