I've been doing well with pikachu venusaur and talonflame. When I have enough coins for another new license it will have to be a tank to balance my pool, but then after that I can check out Gengar. What 3 held items do you recommend?

Also this UI feels so gross to navigate. I can't stand the half second delay between everything.

I like today's Quick map tbh. There's a lot of incentive to play cagey and dunk when the 2x modifier appears.

The only thing I don't care for much is how infrequently abra shows up since you have to kill 10 of them for one of the rewards.

Yeah it's very clunky. I would imagine at some point they will learn how to optimize the MENU of the game.

Also, this is extremely important information the game just straight up doesnt tell you: which moves use Special Attack and which use Physical. I had assumed prior to this that Atk was for basic attacks and SpA was for moves, since I figured it probably wasnt based on how it works in regular Pokmon, and nothing in the game indicates any other explanation for it.


Also, if youre thinking about trying the held items that boost stats when you score a goal, you should know they only stack 6 times.

That's weird because the attack/special split doesn't match the games either. I didn't use the Sp.A held item on Venusaur because I was mainly using what are considered physical moves in the game

yeah I was wondering about Atk/Spatk when I got the items, and seeing there was no stat listing in the Pokemon page I went to look it up and noticed odd mismatches that don't even line-up as mainline games like Charizard

it's weird, there's just no way to know from the game itself to tell which Pokemon wants which held item and you can't use past knowledge of Pokemon stats or moves

Yeah it basically just boils down to "spellcasty and hitting from range = special" and "punchy = physical" as just as overall brush to paint the pokemon, which I'm fine with, but they could easily put a "Physical" or "Special" label on the pokemon screen just so we know.

I'm hoping these are the quality of life improvements we can expect.

another issue I have is that you can't see what anyone's actual stats are, so choosing between something that gives a % increase versus a flat increase is a coinflip until someone datamines that info

My winrates aren't quite as absurd as your gengar so I'm not getting a ton of the win streak bonuses, but I'm consistently putting up 100+ points even on losses now so I get the bonus stars about as frequently as I can which helps with the climb.

I have to be doing something wrong. I don't understand how I keep losing games yet being by far the clear MVP every game. Am I not carrying hard enough? Am I cursed? Am I just ermineneverlucky as usual?

And no, "just play gengar" is a stupid response. I don't think you realize the amount of uselessness my teammates are, and how randomly coordinated the enemy team is, every time.

I'll steal Rotom from 3 enemies right as they are about to finish it and then start ulting them under their point, dealing massive damage and pushing them back. What does our full hp Snorlax do that's right beside me after I go in for my ult?

He just walks away. No abilities, no nothing. Just walks away and watches me almost 1v3 them, barely dying while 2 of them get away with 5% hp.

Do you have MOBA experience? It's a lot about controlling the flow of gameplay more than focusing on raw statistics. I think Gengar is insanely broken but the same principles can be applied with most characters. Your goal is to always make the enemy team have to react to what you're doing, to be efficient and control the pacing of the game more than just getting a kill or two and praying. Especially in this game because death timers are so low, getting a kill is often not enough to score unless you get a full wipe off who's in the lane. But really your goal is to go where the enemy isn't and make them waste time reacting to you, which takes some foresight and planning on where to go ahead of time. But you can just pick Gengar and kill 3 people on your own and score for free and you'll have a much easier time, just saying.

Anyway though, in general this game is very defense focused which is why Zapdos is so op because it removes the opponents ability to defend, but unless you have a big numbers advantage it's almost impossible to score because defending is so much easier since you only have to hit them once. So your goal is really around map play and trying to go where they aren't to sneak points in, and then defending the rest of the time. It's a balance of tempo that makes this game interesting because they force you to do so much in such a little time span. I like that the camp respawn rate is so high because it feels like you can never really perfect a flow of where to go and what to do, you're always having to react to the enemy which is nice.

Anyway I mean once Gengar gets nerfed then 1v9ing will be tough and it will be really focused on map play and understanding of game tempo and taking advantage of your opponents movements and the game will be very hard to climb solo. But in general with MOBAs (and team games in general) it's always going to be a game of numbers, because you can do everything perfectly and still lose if your teammate RNG is bad. So you have to accept that sometimes you're going to be wasting 10 minutes of your life and that's the nature of the beast. At least this game is capped at 10, playing league so much has me so happy that I'm only wasting 10 minutes every time and not up to 40 or 50

Yeah I mean I feel like as you climb up the ranks that will be less true but yeah lol. I already notice a drastic difference in my teammates capability and understanding of what needs to be done compared to when I started, and I'm only in Gold (sorry, forget what this game calls it lol but the third tier of ranked play). Because at this level I feel like it's going to be people with previous experience, since the newbies and children will be coinflipping every game and probably won't climb this high as quickly. Anyway I do think this game has an exciting spin on a traditional MOBA and I've been enjoying my time with it, not 100% sure if it'll be a long term time sink for me but I'm enjoying it for now which is good enough lol

I doubt it since it is generally a big selling point of games like that these days, and having a disable tends to not go over as well. also smartphone would probably be the best way to play if you could configure it to play with mouse and keyboard. i dont think thats an option on switch but I haven't looked into it

He might fly under the nerf radar if his playrate continues to be low

i occasionally see other gengar players in Expert but its a bit rare. When I started climbing I would see them running Dream Eater but at the rank I'm at now it's always Hex/Sludge. I don't think that he can avoid nerfs though, theres no way he's not flagging some obscene metric somewhere

I was actually looking around at tier lists and Gengar wasn't doing particularly well on the ones I found. So it definitely seems like it will still be some time before Gengar catches on.

So yeah, I just unlocked Gengar and... man. That's actually nuts how you just straight up delete everything.

Gengar's flaws are:

1. Awful early game
2. Can't do anything if you miss Toxic Sludge
3. Gets blown up by CC

#1 is mitigated by jungling and certain items. #2 is just a 'git gud' thing - in a game with autoaim, landing skillshots has never been easier. #3 barely counts because everyone in this game gets blown up by CC combos, including tanks.

I feel like all my posts in this topic have been talking about Gengar but it's hard not to when playing him feels like easy mode. From what I've experienced, only Zeroara, Alolan Ninetails, and Garchomp come close.

The healer whose name I can't remember and Lucario don't seem *that* good to me. I rarely see them be the deciding factor in the match. Cinderace is extremely obnoxious though.
