Exactly. That is the fear. Refugee status ending and facing persecution. I've stated I think they're wrong. You clearly think they're wrong. But that doesn't mean they don't fear it and it doesn't make them bad people.

Also seeing you of all people going with "a country did a good thing a few times" as a reason to dismiss them ever doing something bad later on is jarring.
so you're saying that have a completely irrational fear that's leading them to support policies that have no purpose but the published intent to hurt their own (former) countrymen

in other words, you're essentially defending them by comparing them to antivaxxers and antimaskers?

Speaking of antivaxxers...

Tennessee GOP raising the bar. They pressured the state health department into halting all vaccine outreach to kids. And I mean all vaccine outreach. Not just COVID-19 - everything. Also to remove the agency logo from any documents providing vaccine info to the public.

https://twitter.com/BrettKelman/status/1415023788777934850

In addition, they fired the state's top immunization official in retaliation for her attempts to get teenagers vaccinated. She sent out a memo explaining a 1987 doctrine that allowed minors 14 and older to choose to get vaccinated without their parents' consent if they wished.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/07/12/tennessee-fires-vaccination-official/

Gold medal in the death cult Olympics goes to this guy though:

The Washington Post reports...
State Rep. Scott Cepicky (R) criticized the health department for "targeting" the "impressionable youth" with advertising that promotes vaccination for teenagers, which he deemed "reprehensible." Cepicky had recently made a motion to dismantle the health department over the same issue.
Because dismantling the state health department during a pandemic is a very sane thing to do.

Senate Budget Committee Dems (Sanders), Schumer, and Biden have reached an agreement on a $3.5t reconciliation deal (in addition to the bipartisan infrastructure deal which would bring the total to $4.1t combined).

Details not solid (well, Schumer said Medicare expanded to include dental, vision, and hearing) yet but...:

https://twitter.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1415121710668468227

Sanders playing hypeman for it, saying, "This is the most significant piece of legislation passed since the Great Depression, and I'm delighted to be part of having helped to put it together. A lot of work remains."

https://twitter.com/seungminkim/status/1415121514165379075

Warner (one of the moderates on the Budget Committee) says the package will be "fully paid for" which 99% means taxes on the rich and corporations which was what Manchin said he wanted. (Sanders basically said as much as well.)

Manchin and Sinema both put out statements that weren't nos but also not hard yeses. Biden meeting with Senate Dems today to talk to them about it.

let's fucking go. they better get this done.

The muscle behind keeping it illegal (I assume it's primarily alcohol, tobacco, police unions, and prisons in general) must be even more influential than we realize. Every recent marijuana bill put to a vote in every state (including red states) has passed with margins so ridiculous, that I have a hard time believing it's Joe Biden's antiquated beliefs that are halting the push for legalization. It has to be backdoor influence.

It's mostly muscle, but it is both. There's absolutely structural influences in the party against it and that's why they don't do it. But it's also very notable that it's Biden himself who is acting as the fall guy here. His decisions to just not get involved and let it quietly fail is pretty telling imo. And he hasnt exactly been shy about his personal opposition. In fact, given Biden's history (crime bill!) I would even go as far to say that he is likely closer to all this background corruption and opposition than most Senators!

Biden was to the right of every other primary candidate on this, I have a hard time believing if someone else won they'd also be going "no comment" here.

All that said, if Schumer brings it up in the Senate and it passes I'm still not sure Biden kills it. Maybe he does, but if it gets all the way to the end line I just dunno that he vetoes that's just such an own goal. I dunno if it can beat a filibuster though because I just assume the GOP will reflexively oppose it even if in theory this should be an issue they're a bit more open to.

In any event, Schumer's bill is for federal decriminalization and expunging previous records. Biden has said he supports decriminalization so he wouldn't be a problem here anyway.

Biden still opposes federal legalization and wants it left to the states which is stupid af but it could be worse.

I dont think it's an issue of Biden vetoing it, it's just an issue of if there is even political will to get a bill to him when it's very clearly not what he wants to be doing.

Republicans will never let a bill like this pass anyways, they don't want to give Dems that big a win. What Schumer SHOULD do is put it in the reconciliation package and push for 50 votes but again, with Biden and likely at least a few Senators not giving a shit I don't think it happens.

Don't think it would pass muster for reconciliation - remember that still has to be budget issues. Biden may not be enthused about it but the problem area would be the GOP and maybe a handful of moderate Dems with antiquated views. And since Biden isn't enthused it would be harder to wrangle any stray Dem votes on it by having him working them.

Still would expect GOP to kill it though.

Texas wants to pass some trash voter suppression law - we talked about it some at the time, but they literally rushed it out in the dead of night, adding shit that wasn't even in the original version which was already trash.

Now, as a general rule, in pretty much all legislatures you need a quorum to actually pass legislation (the exact number varies from place to place from like 50%, 66%, etc.) Originally Texas Dems (who didn't even get to see the language being inserted into the bill until it went public, again, at the last second) walked out to deny the Texas legislature a quorum because Republicans alone couldn't meet it (so I'm guessing it was probably 2/3's present or something.) As part of this rush job, the Texas Republicans literally had to pass it that night because they waited until the very last night of the legislative session and by law it would end at midnight.

This succeeded. Texas's governor threw a tantrum and then called a special session of the legislature to pass this law (because again, Texas law dictates when the legislature is in session, the legislature can't call itself into session , and the regular session had ended.) So Texas Dems have used the same tactic again here. In response the Republicans remaining in the legislature ordered that they be returned, under arrest if necessary. (Apparently they can authorize that without a quorum or maybe it's looser on such a thing idk.) AFAIK the Texas Dems (or a fair number of them) headed to DC.

So that's where we are.

It remains legal for the police to lie in interrogation for those over 18 in Illinois and for everyone in every other state. (New York and Oregon are considering similar legislation for themselves.)

Reminds me of a Dateline on this issue... *looks up*

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EGgyEUT910

When the actual 2 killers were caught they scattershotted blame to a bunch of other students, Robert Davis was one, a kid they bullied. Police take him in, interrogate him all through the night, lie to him saying they have incriminating evidence that will definitely prove him guilty and the only way they can "help" him is if he "confesses". All while police feed the story to him and constantly have to "correct" him on details he obviously doesn't know.

They even lie to him about being allowed to lie, to convince him they're being serious -_-

A decade later the actual killers (also in jail) admitted they made up their accusation of him which was literally the only "evidence" police had, so Robert Davis filed for clemency which was denied by Virginia's Republican governor at the time who chose not to investigate. Wasn't until Ralph Northam's predecessor got in (northam obv the only name I remember bc blackface scandal) that Davis was freed.

GOP probably going to filibuster the bipartisan infrastructure bill. GOP Whip said it won't get 60. Dems should put up the vote, force them to do it, then just raise the reconciliation number to fold it into that (the bipartisan bill was already such a joke it wouldn't be much of an add, relatively speaking!) They're going to tank it because they have hardened on: You can't roll back Trump's tax cuts, you can't raises taxes in any way, and you can't provide for better enforcement of the current tax code to gain revenue from tax cheats. Which sure is a Republican Party take.

Over in the House, McCarthy picked his 5 choices for the 1/6 Select Committee. Includes 3 members who voted against certification - including Jim Jordan. Pelosi has veto power though (because she trolled them and adopted the exact language for formation of the committee the GOP used for the Benghazi committees) so she better toss them and say anyone who opposed certification isn't getting on the committee.
