So they can no longer falsely promise leniency for a confession or claim incriminating evidence exists when it doesn't, etc.

It remains legal for the police to lie in interrogation for those over 18 in Illinois and for everyone in every other state. (New York and Oregon are considering similar legislation for themselves.)

When the actual 2 killers were caught they scattershotted blame to a bunch of other students, Robert Davis was one, a kid they bullied. Police take him in, interrogate him all through the night, lie to him saying they have incriminating evidence that will definitely prove him guilty and the only way they can "help" him is if he "confesses". All while police feed the story to him and constantly have to "correct" him on details he obviously doesn't know.

They even lie to him about being allowed to lie, to convince him they're being serious -_-

A decade later the actual killers (also in jail) admitted they made up their accusation of him which was literally the only "evidence" police had, so Robert Davis filed for clemency which was denied by Virginia's Republican governor at the time who chose not to investigate. Wasn't until Ralph Northam's predecessor got in (northam obv the only name I remember bc blackface scandal) that Davis was freed.
