As someone who never played Andromeda: despite having seen a lot of people say they dislike it, I still have no idea why it's supposed to be bad outside of facial animations. People were SO ready to dump on that game.

Ryder is just not a compelling lead at all. They're fine, but you can't be just fine when you're following Shepard. None of your squadmates are that special either, other than maybe the one guy who's from a new species. You can't help but compare the characters to the original trilogy, and they just come up short.

I think the gameplay is pretty good, and I enjoyed terraforming worlds, but the world building just isn't there like the OT.

I never played ME3 back in the day, but I remember the uproar. Does this version do anything to fix the ending everyone hated?

The original ending was literally a 0/10 troll ending.

The fixed ending is still only like a 3/10 if were being generous. Theres only so much they could pull out of their ass in a limited time. The game overall is still great though and would probably have been like an 11/10 all time masterpiece with even an average ending.

Yeah, ME3's ending took so much out of everyone's sails that we forget (or at least I do) most of the game leading up to it was almost peerless in quality.

Who knows, maybe it'll hit a little different now when we're almost a decade older and generally mellower about these things.

In classic mode, you will retain the same 1-60 level range. In legendary mode, you will use the new 1-30 level range.

I'm not taking the plunge on it just yet, but I might if the ME1 changes are significant enough. Although I think my biggest problem with potentially re-playing the series is that I'm honestly not interested in experiencing the other choices. My original ME runthrough went exactly how I wanted it to.

That doesn't seem too unusual. IIRC, levels up in ME1 gave out 3 at first, then 2, then 1. So if they cut the levels in half it makes sense they'd double the points given.

This is not a knock at Mass Effect, but it amazes me that gaming as a whole has taken this long to figure out how to handle ambient conversation and still isn't consistent with it. Some games still cut off interesting dialogue and never bring it back.

if i regained all the time i've lost because of reloading a save because i accidentally missed/had ambient dialogue cut off because of something dumb like getting ambushed, or walking too far, or unfortunately hitting a menu right as it started which for some reason means the game just kills it entirely...

...i'd have a lot of time

Ironically, I think Mass Effect is probably one of the better games for me in this regard!

Kaiden is voiced by the same guy who voiced Carth Onasi in KotOR, and he sounds exactly the same (no change in cadence or anything, he just used his natural voice) so I've always kept him alive. Just too much nostalgia there.

Got Spectered up.

I'm being reminded of all the issues I had with this game that I'm just finding myself not caring about a ton. The camera is way too close. It sucks, but I don't care. Movement feels really bad. It sucks, but I don't care. The Citadel is most noting empty space and is a pain to explore. I don't care.

I really feel like I'm making a lot of excuses for this game. I guess it's just truly a case of something being more than the sum of its parts. All I have to do is hear Garrus or Wrex say a few lines and all the problems go away.

I believe I heard they were adjusting how it was handled in ME2 at the least but I don't know how exactly - whether it's a complete revamp that stops punishing you for a mixed playthrough or if it's "just" making some of the thresholds more forgiving.

They made the thresholds for them more forgiving, particularly stuff like the confrontations between your squadmates, like Miranda/Jack and Tali/Legion in ME2.

I liked Andromeda. It had a lot of glaring problems though.

Old post but I agree

I enjoyed the gameplay and feel like if you gave the characters two more games they'd end up being pretty good. I was interested in how the larger story played out.

Like Garrus isn't my favourite character in the series because of ME1 alone, good lord can you imagine? Worst incarnation of Garrus easily (not bad, just not memorable). ME1 crew are made better in retrospect because you meet them and get the fond memories of them and stuff. Not necessarily great in a vacuum. I like to think Andromeda would have done something similar - although Jaal was just really good regardless. Liam may have been irreparable though.

I like Kaidan :)

Andromeda plays nicely and there's some good ideas with the open world there, but the writing is a mess. I'd like it more if it stuck to the 'quirky little sidestory spinoff' stuff and removed the more serious grand ideas that really doesn't work with the obviously limited budget they had. Like they set up how big a deal it is to go to a new galaxy and interact with new species for the first time, then 2 minutes later you're just chatting to the new aliens normally and doing fetch quests for everyone.

And imo they went too hard on the snarky comedic Marvel style dialogue with the new crew, they should've toned that down and had them act like real beings. They're not all awful but they aren't very interesting overall.

Yeah, I would agree with this. I ranked Andromeda on a similar level with ME1 because it also had a lot of glaring problems. ME1 could make up for it in other ways, like the A+ world building, but yeah.

Glad to see that they didn't completely fuck up the remakes after the tire fire that was Andromeda.

I'm worried that the changes to ME1 are negatives though, since ME1 was easily my favourite of the 3. It just felt so much more open and expansive, even if a lot of that was artificial. Going from ME1 to ME2 is like going from the open world FF games to the "walk in a straight line" style of FF10/12/13
