80/80

It probably isn't as challenging as I psyched myself up for it to be, I've been in more chaotic online queues and waitlists for sure, but having to make reservations two months in advance at a specific time on a specific day had me nervous. If I had failed to make reservations for when I did, my next opportunity to do this wouldn't be for a long time (years), so I'm glad it was a success. Excited to have a fancy overpriced meal with my favorite person!

What's the fanciest restaurant you've been to? Have you ever tried to make reservations for an exclusive place months in advanced?

For me it was Fleur de Lys in San Francisco many years back

There were three of us and the total came to $600 or so. It was great though I had some melt in your mouth sweetbreads and got to try absinthe for the first time.

That sounds delicious. There's a lot of great places in SF! The first time I had absinthe was at a hotel party and my friend's boyfriend who was from somewhere in Europe brought some actual absinthe back with him. That's the closest I've ever got to blackout drunk, and I didn't even drink that much. Absinthe is my favorite hard liquor now though. I haven't found any "authentic" absinthe with wormwood here, but the American absinthes I've had have still been good.

And the place I'm going to is also in SF! I paid for the meal already with the reservation, and for the two of us with a wine pairing it's over $1k, but this is a special occasion and I've got a bit of extra money to splurge.

Hopefully. It's the first woman in America to get three Michelin stars, is on the World's 50 Best, and she has a Chef's Table episode, so I'm hoping those are all good indicators. I'll find out in a couple months if it's actually worth it lol

Fanciest I've done is Otoko in Austin. $215/person for sushi omakase, $75/person for sake pairing, plus 20% tip and taxes.

They only seat 12 people at a time.

It was amazing.

I had a similar experience at the creatively named Omakase in SF! They do (or did, at the time) two separate seatings a night of I think 16-18 people. It's my only omakase experience so far, but I have eaten a lot of good sushi throughout my life, and this place was the best I've had. But pricing was probably about similar to yours. I think maybe a bit less (benefit of being closer to the ocean?). I also wasn't drinking at the time, so only one of the people I was with did the sake pairing. I still regret not doing it.

I've only been to Austin once, and only a small bit of my time was spent actually in the city, but all the food I had there was fantastic. Franklin's was actually worth the three hour line. Next time I'm there I'll need to see if I have enough money to accommodate Otoko. I want to try sushi omakase again.

Yep it's the same company! I was curious because it seems like a weird pairing. But Michelin started out as a travel company (and they still review hotels as well restaurants, just in a separate guide!) and now they're known for tires and restaurant ratings.

I love it. We're nearby Saru Sushi Bar and their omakase was delicious. We're going to have a weekend getaway in Sausalito coming up and will get omakase at Sushi Ran which is supposed to be pretty good (though not as good reviews as the others) (along with just eating a ton of seafood in general while we're over there).

I love sushi ._.

Please tell us how the experience is like. My cousins ate at a two Michelin stars and three Michelin stars (or was it one Michelin star and two Michelin stars?) restaurants in France. According to my cousin, he thought the "lesser" of the two was a better experience and worth the money. The extra cost involved for the higher of the two, did not seem worth it.

JigsawTDC posted...

Not exactly comparable to any Michelin star restaurant but I would say these two have been the fanciest/favorites of mine. Gordon Ramsay Steak in Las Vegas, NV and Alexander's Steakhouse in Pasadena, CA.

I entertained the thought of going to Sukiyabashi Jiro in Japan but I think at this point one needs to have a certain hotel reservation to even have a chance of getting reservations.

Realistically I would have to settle for the younger son's restaurant or try n/naka in Los Angeles.

I haven't been to any two Michelin starred places, but I have been to four one starred places now (Omakase mentioned above was my first Michelin experience) and lost count of how many Bib Gourmand and just mentioned places I've been, so I feel I have enough experience with the guide to determine if three stars is worth the price. I'll definitely report back though!

I'm currently living in Las Vegas and I took my person to Gordon Ramsay Steak last year! Definitely one of the best steakhouses I've been to. Alexander's has been on my list for a while, but still haven't had an opportunity.

We've got very similar interests/taste. I'm moving to Japan in September (COVID depending still, but I'm optimistic), and Jiro's is the number one place I want to try. I know it's difficult, but I'll be in Japan at least a year and hopefully be able to secure a day.

n/naka is also a place I plan on taking my person to one of these years. After the place mentioned in OP (Atelier Crenn), our top three dream places to eat at are (in no particular order) n/naka, Alinea, and The French Laundry.

I love sushi too. Living in Las Vegas we don't have quite as many good options as the Bay Area, so I'm really looking forward to moving back for that. Also a big highlight for when I move to Japan!

Sushi combo for 2 at a Morimoto restaurant in Chicago. Didn't even need reservations. Final tab was about $300. My boss covered the tab that night.

There was also the dinners at our wedding. $150 per plate but it was delicious. Our guests deserved the best.

If I want a fancy meal that restaurants feel they can charge $500 for, I'm capable of making it myself. In fact, probably better.

Why do you work at a diner and a pizza bar then instead of pulling in the big $$$$?? I'm not saying you can't replicate or do better than that caliber of chef, but it seems like an odd choice if what you say is true.

Anything you have to book that far in advance is worth mentioning for sure! Michelin doesn't even cover a lot of great food cities anyway. My reservation for this place isn't until July!

No. You could not, nor could anyone else, replicate or emulate this meal for $10. The fact that you claim to be a chef but have little actual understanding of the culinary world is always hilarious though. If you think the price is for "just the meal" then a lot of this is already going over your head. I don't have the time or patience to explain it to you today though.

So you think because a server took your order, a runner served your food and a bartender made/poured your drinks, that warrants paying $500 for $10 worth of food? That's a level of ignorance I can't stand.

I buy food at the same store all the restaurants in the metropolis I live in shop at. I'm also knowledgeable about the cost of buying food stuffs from global providers like Sysco.

I'm also capable of perfectly cooking a perfectly seasoned medium rare steak. Why would I pay $500 for something I can do myself?
