For me it was Fleur de Lys in San Francisco many years back

There were three of us and the total came to $600 or so. It was great though I had some melt in your mouth sweetbreads and got to try absinthe for the first time.

That sounds delicious. There's a lot of great places in SF! The first time I had absinthe was at a hotel party and my friend's boyfriend who was from somewhere in Europe brought some actual absinthe back with him. That's the closest I've ever got to blackout drunk, and I didn't even drink that much. Absinthe is my favorite hard liquor now though. I haven't found any "authentic" absinthe with wormwood here, but the American absinthes I've had have still been good.

And the place I'm going to is also in SF! I paid for the meal already with the reservation, and for the two of us with a wine pairing it's over $1k, but this is a special occasion and I've got a bit of extra money to splurge.
