Which one that's up for best picture is your favorite?

Kinda crept up on me honestly.

Its too late for a prediction thread but I guess this could be a discussion topic if anyones down for it? Feel like Nomadlands the runaway favorite here.

Wanted to see Minari but I never got around to renting it. Kind of the same with Judas. And I imagine The Father would be rather hard for me to watch as my mom is going through something similar with her mom/my grandma right now.

I'm really tempted to go with Hopkins for the big upset of the night, but I'm not sure. This definitely feels like a circumstance where the media is driving a narrative ("We have to give Boseman a sympathy Oscar") that is not felt to the same extent in the industry itself.

This isn't a great comparison, but I'm reminded of Stallone being the favorite to win for "Creed," with a narrative being built up in the media that it would be a great personal accomplishment for Stallone. This completely ignored the fact that within the industry itself, Stallone is very disliked, and on a personal level many people in the Academy were in no rush to reward him, like the media thought they were.

Now, Boseman is actually very well liked in the industry itself, so in this case personal factors might be enough to help him win, but I am not sure if he is as *beloved* as he is in the press. So the question is, how well liked was he, and is it enough for people to overlook one of Hopkins's greatest performances, and the desire to give Hopkins a legacy Oscar of his own?

So I havent seen the Father yet, but Bosemans acting in Ma Rainey was great (I would have preferred Riz, but I can understand why Chadwicks probably winning, he was also really good in Da 5 Bloods. Just strong and commandeering in both roles). Theres also the fact that Hopkins already has an Oscar, so there isnt as much of a need to give a legacy one to him

I can absolutely see this happening. I don't think Boseman would have a shot if he were still alive- not a knock on the performance, which is great, I just don't think the Oscars would go for him otherwise as they didn't seem big on Ma Rainey. And there's precedent like you say with Stallone and also Colman upsetting Close recently. I still think Boseman is the fav though.

I've only seen Mank and Chicago 7 (and Ma Rainey and Miami but they didn't get into BP) and they are the films I am least interested in of this list. Sound of Metal is on Prime so I'll watch that and Nomadland when it comes on Disney+ but idk when I'll get to see the others.

Who do you guys have winning for Best Actress? That seems the most up in the air of the 'big' categories.

that's a good point; though Minari is pretty much split half/half and an American film, which definitely separates it from Parasite. Also politically/optics wise it makes sense for the Oscars to go all in on Minari this year.

The show looks very nice from a visual standpoint; I hope they keep this cinematography and some of the aesthetics for next year. They despearately needed a orchestra to play people off though; they're allowing the winners to ramble on forever about nothing. They have also apparently instructed the presenters to be as grim and non-charismatic as possible for some reason.

Yeah, they had to have thought Boseman would win, and it would end on a big note. Or at the very least that whoever won Best Actress wouldn't just go "K' Bye." As far as I know, the only time since the Oscars has been televised that it did not end on Best Picture, was when Charlie Chaplin got his Honorary Oscar for '71.

This was so weird to me. Some years the barely had anyone shown and it felt like they didn't include everyone they could have. This year it felt like they included everyone (or close to it as I forgot about Rivera and Walter) but I barely finished reading their names before they moved on. So strange.

Yeah it's weird. I thought they were skipping the actor categories and we'd have to look online for them since they announced Best Picture right at 10 which was suspicious to me. But it's pretty hard not to think that they really expected Boseman to win. And couldn't have expected McDormand to just peace out too leaving the end to just kind of sputter.

Otherwise I thought it was a pretty good show. Not as tight in some places but overall it was pretty good with the constraints they were given.

really just a weird weird show

the in memoriam felt super disrespectful, particularly in a year where not only hollywood lost a lot of people but everybody did. the person introducing it was just so ridiculously overdramatic. then there were glaring omissions and not even giving anyone a chance to applaud for icons like christopher plummer. I also understand how having an upbeat song can also be a way to mourn but this just wasn't it.

you can never criticize a hopkins award win, since he's amazing always but that was the most anticlimactic ending to an oscars I've ever seen.

for 80% of the show, everybody was super serious to the point of being dour, and then we got that really wacky song game and the scripted glenn close stuff. made for the memes basically.

frances mcdormand telling everybody to go watch movies in the theater shoulder to shoulder and then howling at the moon has some really gross energy to it.

nothing here really made me feel good except harrison ford's blade runner gag and him being surprisingly good at pronouncing names.

True, but I do think he would've had a shot this year if Mank was... a better movie. Can't believe it won cinematography just for being black and white, it wasn't even good at being black and white!

From what I've seen the winners seem pretty decent this year, even if the show itself had some bizarre decisions. Ridiculous that nobody thought 'hey what if Boseman doesn't win' when they swapped the order around, nothing is ever set in stone and Hopkins was the clear dark horse, especially after the bafta win. And why was director so early? Feels disrespectful to Zhao as everyone knew she was winning.

I don't know who has the most power for these events.
If it's on the director, then Glenn Weiss is to blame, if Dave Rubin as AMPAS prez decides what goes last then it's on him.
If the broadcasters who are most concerned with ratings pulled strings, then it's on ABC.

But yeah happy for Hopkins, dude can clearly retire whenever he wants but he's still doing his thing.
He's had such a good career that I don't think he'll be remembered for more than just Silence of the Lambs.

My guess is that the order decision was a combination of wishful thinking that people care about Chadwick Boseman (your average Oscar viewer has no idea who he is) and some internal audit that said they'd optimize their ad revenue by having Best Picture go earlier. Either way, it was amusing as fuck lol.
