from what i've gathered, gunbreaker requires a higher apm, but other than that they're pretty much equivalent

Mostly what flavor of utility you want to bring.

GNB for highest sustained DPS
WAR for high burst window DPS while being a blue Healer for yourself
DRK for being a great shield provider, I guess? (Least familiar tank)
PLD for cheesing Bozja and ACTUALLY being a blue Healer, with middling to low damage comparatively.

PLD isn't even low damage anymore. In fact it's the second highest performing tank right now, under GNB. WAR is very highly dependent on fight length and burst windows and isn't the godlike DPS machine it once was, though you can't really quantify how much effort it saves healers. DRK is now at the bottom but is still heavily played because TBN is that good.

I was trying to solo A8 a few days ago and I would throw up TBN and the damage just went through without me getting the procs.

You might have been too late, there is a slight delay between pressing the button and receiving the buff and registering the damage for all of your cooldowns. It happens. Also if the damage is not enough to eat the entire shield you don't get the proc which is likely to occur in unsynced content.

I can't think of anything in A8 that would ignore shields. Ignoring invulns is a thing but I'm not sure.

There were cases where I was taking damage multiple times in a row while the shield was "up", so I'm not sure.

I only tried it once becuse I was getting much further with RDM, though. DRK just does not seem like the tank to do that kind of stuff with.

No, DRK has notoriously bad self-healing that TBN doesn't really make up for when soloing.

DRK and WAR also have garbage immunities which are worthless for soloing

Holmgang is super useful with the amount of self-healing WAR has so I dunno about that one! You can still survive a hit and heal yourself up unless you really need to take zero damage at all. It at least works solo, unlike TBN.

WOOOOO did it.

Doing that with a DPS is intense, I mean I don't think it could be done with a DPS other than RDM unless there's something in not thinking of. It wasn't actually HARD, it's just I had to Vercure, like...nonstop.

We had a DC'd healer right near the end of Pagl during the final trash pull and wiped. There were like 5 enemies left, maybe 6. Took maybe 8 minutes to get a new healer in counting the 3 we waited before kicking. When we finally got back...there was one nearly dead enemy left. Turns out Tiamat just keeps on fighting indefinitely even if there's nobody on the map with her.

Dark Knight is my favorite tank to play but it is definitely the weakest currently.

Discussing the relative strength of the tanks is a weird conversation to me because they all have areas in which they excel. If you're looking at raw DPS then yeah DRK is the lowest, but the difference between the highest and lowest tank is about 4%, which is an effectively insignificant difference - it's well within the range where player skill and job comfort trumps job composition. Looking only at the raw damage numbers also obscures the strengths of the individual jobs - for instance, DRK has The Blackest Night, arguably the strongest tank cooldown in the game. The sheer amount of damage you can mitigate with TBN translates into needing less healing, which translates into more healer damage GCDs.

Prior to this last patch WAR was in the position of being the lowest DPS tank, but WAR brings Nascent Flash, which allows the WAR player to heal themselves for some frankly ridiculous amounts. It's the inverse of TBN - rather than mitigating damage you heal yourself after you take it. This again saves healer GCDs, which translates into more raid damage.

The tanks are basically equivalent in every meaningful way - any tank composition can clear any content, and you can play whatever tank you want without griefing your group as long as you know how the job works. Tank balance is the best it's ever been and I hope SE can manage to keep things this balanced in 6.0.

At the very least as a normal difficulty (so far) player, I've been pretty astounded by the balance. I have literally never once looked at the team and had any positive or negative thoughts about party comp. I just know it's going to work out.

I hope we get decent info on Friday. I've decided to not even touch Astro until 6.0 because of the rework, and I would like to hear at least a little about what that is going to entail.

Gotta be 71 to start it I think. Once in you get EXP from Skirmishes and CEs. Castrum gives a lot of EXP if that pops

Every so often I think of giving XI a go for nostalgia sake but then remember the UI and the hassle of getting the account setup.

Snagged the new shop minions because I have a problem. I think that puts me at 240 minions, which is my true endgame progression.

I kinda want to try FF11 but not enough to pay a sub for it
