Ive tried playing this 3 times now and everytime I get to Level 50, I hit the wall.

A few genuine questions, if anyone wouldnt mind answering:

Dungeons dont feel momentous. They feel like Im being led by a string on the same pre-meditated pathways. Does that improve? For example, are their puzzles or labyrinths that change with each play through?

Do enemy and boss attacks force me to dodge more frequently and stay engaged other than sitting next to the boss doing the same combo string?

What is in endgame that makes it all worth it?

Right now, Im post-ARB and am doing a lot of fetch quests that are more eye-rolling then engaging. Does the story and quests improve?

The dungeons actually get even more straightforward layout wise. The difference is, unlike most dungeons in ARR, they aren't, you know....bad. Dungeons become more and more focused on spectacle. I will take literally any expansion dungeon over any ARR dungeon, especially tehe really awful ones between levels 40 and 50.

....YES.

The amount of content just keeps growing. I haven't even dipped my toe into actual, like, high difficulty content and stuff like that, but the amount of extra raids and dungeons and side activities is, frankly, staggering.

Right now, Im post-ARB and am doing a lot of fetch quests that are more eye-rolling then engaging. Does the story and quests improve?

ARR patch missions are tied with the pre-Titan questlines as the dullest MSQ content in the game. You are not wrong to feel like it's rough. There is a HUGE payoff at the end just before Heavensward, but that doesn't help the buildup.

To say it improves would be a gross understatement. I enjoyed ARR for what it was when going through it initially, but there is no content within that I would ever be interested in intentiinally revisiting outside of roulettes.

I'm of the opinion that the game gets better and better with each expansion. This goes for story, too. Shadowbringers was incredible.

Unfortunately, you have to get through ARR to get to the really good stuff.

So I started playing on the free trial. I'm level 21, started as an archer. Got the main story quests to go to the other two capitols, finished those up and now my main story quests is in the Limsa Lominsa territories.

I decided to grab Marauder and level that up in the starting Limsa zones until I got to the one I was being told to go to, then switch back to Archer. However the starting zone seems to have a level 5 quest and then a level 10 quest and... that's it?

Am I supposed to level other classes only off of hunting logs, fates and leves? Are there not other low level quests for me to complete in different zones? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Don't bother with regular sidequests or leves.Sidequests don't give anything resembling meaningful EXP. I haven't done a single non-blue sidequests in over 400 hours and 3 expansions. Leves also give pitiful exp, those should be saved for crafting and gathering classes. Pretty much just doing Hunting quests and some Fates will take you almost all the way to 16 so you can start doing Dungeons, which is your primary leveling method. Hunting quests you can also be ignored once you've completed the first two sets.

However my strongest advice by far is to not actually level other jobs at all until you get to the end of the trial (level 60). Even just doing Hunting Logs is made much, much easier once you have all the teloperts, mounts, and flying unlocked.

Unless you actually intend to change your main job, I would stick with one for now.

Also I just realized with how much exp MSQ gives you being at 21 doesn't necessarily mean you've reached the first dungeon Satasha yet, which is a level 16 quest.

It will become pretty clear that that is the content you should be doing to level any character past 16.

Also you should by like 100 eggs and put them on your hotbar. Eggs are practically free, and when you eat any food you become "well fed" and get +3% EXP for half an hour. You can eat two in a row to cap at a 1 hour buff at a time.

The only obnoxious part about leveling alternative jobs is the period of time when you have to grind hunting log and FATEs to get up to the point where you can access roulettes. Once you're there it's easy. I would advise you to spend roulette EXP bonuses (one bonus per roulette per day) on alt jobs if you find yourself dramatically outleveling the story.

It sounds like you have not even gained access to the first dungeon yet, so it'll all make sense then!

You should be doing all the blue quests, VERY IMPORTANT.

But yeah regular quests are not going to give you anything resembling a worthwhile reward, in items, money, or exp.

This is exactly why I got ever starter job to 30. I'll prob ky end up getting them all to 50 simultaneously as well to leave ARR behind in one big chunk.

Got my starting class to level 10 and did the quest for it so decided to try my hand at other classes and did some mining. Very relaxing and I was shocked how quickly it leveled up compared to being a gladiator, but I guess that makes sense for gathering classes.

Classes get exp boosts if you've got one ahead of the pack. It's getting that initial one to 80 that is a slog, sometimes.

Case in point, I went from 14 Rogue to 50 Ninja in the span of the last week, and I've barely focused on it compared to Bard and such.

The crafters/gatherers used to level at about the same rate as combat classes until very recently this expansion where they turbocharged them!

For your first combat class you should just focus on doing the main story which will powerlevel you and will get you that sweet exp boost on others. Also do Hall of the Novice once you unlock it to get an EXP boost item.

(also to anyone not on the free trial who plans on sticking around you can pre-order endwalker to get an earring that gives another significant exp boost)

Ah okay. So for custom deliveries they want three of the first item, then six of each subsequent item until you max them out. After that they'll ask for a random item each week, either one of the ones you previously gave them or one new one. The new one will have "bonus" status and give you 1.5 times as many scrips (any probably exp? I don't remember).

Once you have enough custom deliveries maxed out you will ideally only deliver items on bonus (or items to level up other custom delivery clients), though you may get unlucky some weeks and have to settle for regular items (at which point you might be able to make use of those Dated Radz-at-Han Coins again, though getting them again is easy enough that it's not worth holding on to them).

For rarefied items go to the "special recipe" tab and then to "collectables."

It's an astounding jump in quality basically immediately.

You gotta look at it like this...all of ARR's effort was put into fixing a dumpster fire. They did a great job with that, but "fixing" was priority over "excelling". Heavensward is them being able to actually let loose.

ARR is also a 2013 MMO which is a very different prospect to even a 2015 MMO. New subscription-based MMOs were still a thing at that time! WoW was still huge, only a few years off its peak. ARR was a good improvement on the WoW formula.

Thanks to all the hubbub of late, I may be about to start a free trial with a few friends! (We have a friend who's already a paid player to help us with party making)

How friendly is this game to actually playing the game and leveling as a group? It sounds like the main story is supposed to be the main focus, but from what I gather that stuff is really designed as a single player experience and straight up can't be done in a group in many cases. I would assume we could all just group and do side quests while doing the story on a different class, but then there were folks earlier in this topic saying those were all worthless. >_>

Theres not really any advantage to being in a group outside of instanced content (dungeons, trials, raids). Since all of that content is repeatable and your level/gear is synced down appropriately to that content you can still do dungeons with your friends even if theyre ahead of you or vice versa, though (assuming theyre willing to replay those dungeons).

Grouping up is pretty much just for doing dungeons and other instanced content, which you will start doing at level 16.

To clarify, that's quest level 16. You will probably be a good deal higher than that by the time you reach it with how fast leveling goes from the main scenario quests now.

You'd be better off flying solo while chatting in Discord then you would be actually grouped up, TBQH. Also just so you're aware since you didn't mention how many friends, IIRC there won't be any content that involved a part larger than 4 people until you hit quest level 50.

You do the dungeons together!

At the end of the day in terms of actual PROGRESSION through the game there isn't really a lot of opportunity for it unless you're all, like, totally in synch with where you are in the story. Grouping up would mostly be for running stuff after the fact. As has been said many times by both people and staff, FFXIV is seen as a Final Fantasy game first and an MMO second.

HOWEVER, once you reach the end of an expansion (2.0, 3.0, etc), all the content between expansions is all at level cap for that expansion. So there are a ton of dungeons and raids that are locked at 50, 60, 70, and 80. These are notable stretches of the game where you would be doing the same level stuff even if you aren't in the same place as eachother.
