This is easily the best final you've ever had. Thanks for running this, brother. Two games who absolutely deserve to win.

The consensus going into the 2020 Championship was "Whoever Wins, We All Do". Without any hesitation whatsoever, Hades immediately built a huge lead right out the gate. I was sitting there on my 24 hour duty shift keeping tabs on my phone what the score was and I was preparing to compare it to the blowout that Portal 2 did on Uncharted 3 in the 2011 Championship (36-13). At one point, Hades was up by a commanding score of 21-8 and it seemed all but over. However...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnJz5IwCeDY

Final Fantasy VII Remake absolutely refused to give up. A surge of votes came in during the final quarter and it was no longer a guarantee that Hades was going to escape with the championship. I counted every last vote twice and here's what I got...

Final score: Hades wins Best Game of 2020 with a 35-34 finish

Holy hell. This puts Square at a miserable 1-8 in the championship, but damn did Final Fantasy VII Remake give Hades one hell of a fight. Ulti was right, this was without question the best championship I've had in the 25 tournaments I've done this from 1996 to 2020, and I've had the following before...

  • Dark Souls III beating Pokemon Sun/Moon by a single vote casted in the final 8 seconds of overtime in 2016
  • A Link Between Worlds beating The Last of Us in overtime in 2013
  • Metroid Prime and Kingdom Hearts battling into overtime in 2002 in a match that had a combined 141 votes in 2 days
  • Final Fantasy VIII and Spyro 2 going into double overtime in the 1999 tournament in a match that had a combined 137 votes and had Spyro only winning by 3 in the end

This outdoes them all. Someone in the nominating topic even posted the prediction of Hades beating FF7 Remake in the finals knowing Square's ability to choke hard in the championship. Hades went through a murderer's row of incredibly acclaimed titles, beating Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Final Fantasy VII Remake to claim the latest crown. And if there were X-Stats, Hades pretty much made FF7R, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Ghost of Tsushima all look like a million dollars.

FINALLY... 2020's Ultimate Loser is...

Hades > FF7 Remake > Ori 2 > Doom Eternal > Hyrule Warriors AoC > Crusader Kings III > Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory

If FF7 Remake had pulled off the win, the Ultimate Loser would have been Cyberpunk 2077, but seeing an unnecessary Kingdom Hearts spinoff get this after getting crushed by Crusader Kings III is as equally satisfying, if not more so. Huge thanks to everyone who took part in nominating and voting for their favorite games of 2020. Easily the best tournament I've done in all the time I've spent on this board.

Note: I'm aware some winners were released later on multiple consoles, as well as Hades' PC release, but the 1 PC I'm referring to is Disco Elysium being on PC when it won in 2019. These releases are pertaining to what consoles the games were available on at the time of their appearance in the tournament (the PS3's one game being Uncharted 3, despite being rereleased on PS4, or Xenoblade appearing on three different consoles over the course of 8 years)
Interesting note previously mentioned: The Nintendo 64 was the first Nintendo console to not have a game win a championship.

aw yeah

Cool tournament, thanks for doing this. I've barely played any games from last year so didn't take part but I enjoyed seeing how it went, FF7 coming back from that ridiculous Hades start in the final was some top tier contest action! FF continuing to fall at the final hurdle is pretty hilarious too. How many finals has that series choked now? Which game was the lone Square winner actually, one of the Kingdom Hearts?

Prince of Persia stunned top seeded Wind Waker to get an easy route to the finals and then knocked off Knights of the Old Republic.

Spyro 2 was a crazy anomaly getting wins over Smash and FF8.

Rocket League was pretty popular here in 2015 and just happened to have things fall in place for it to win. The bigger shock that year was seeing Witcher III lose to Life is Strange.

FF7 lost to Symphony of the Night in 1997 finals

FF9 lost to Pokmon GSC in the 2000 finals
FFX lost to Melee in the 2001 finals
FF13 lost to Galaxy 2 in 2010 semifinals
FF15 lost to Dark Souls III in 2016 semifinals
FF7R lost to Hades in 2020 Finals

KH1 lost to Metroid Prime in 2002 finals
KH2 lost to Okami in 2006 finals
KH3 lost to Disco Elysium in 2019 semifinals

Nier Automata lost to Mario Odyssey in 2017 semifinals

In short, Square is the Jerry West of these tournaments. Their one win is Mario RPG, and technically Nintendo was involved a little

I asked this myself in a previous topic! The early years weren't run at the time, but retroactively on the board in recent years (I think). Like Zero mentions the 1995 contest will be coming up.

That's what I expected, so it explains some of the odd choices; not that any of the winners are bad games, just that I expect opinion would have been different if they were run at the time.

If OoT lost to 1080 then it's simply people being contrarian to avoid the LAW. No way OoT doesn't make the final in 1998 if asked at that time. I'm not certain of the result of a 1998 era OoT vs Pokemon match though; I expect it would have been a good one.

2006 probably would have been different too had I started at an earlier year and these tournaments picked up steam over time. It and 2005 had the lowest votals (nothing was beating RE4 in 2005, no matter how popular/unpopular my tournament was back then)

That and admittedly while a unique idea, the previous nominating style looking back was a bit farfetched. For those unfamiliar, I used to run Game of the Month polls. The top 3 every month would get a spot in the GotY tournament with the monthly winner being guaranteed no lower than a 3 seed.

It was weird seeing Brain Age get a 3 seed only to get knocked off by a Splinter Cell game in round 1. I stopped doing the GotM polls when I began retroactive tournaments. It was much easier and better that way.

- Said #15 seed nearly missing the Elite Eight after losing in quadruple overtime to Yooka Laylee 2
- Top seed Resident Evil 2 losing to AI: The Somnium Files in the Final Four
- #1 seeds Bloodstained and Fire Emblem losing to #8 seeds in the second round (Life is Strange 2 and Tetris 99 to be exact)
- Kingdom Hearts III somehow still managing to make the Final Four
- And of course Disco Elysium becoming the first PC exclusive to win a tournament.
