I got stuck on one level of a DSiWare game for months, so I just gave up and never went back to it. I wasn't the only one who had trouble with it either; there were plenty of topics about it and no solution posted.

I rarely quit games that I've started in general. Of the rare examples I can only think of stuff that I just got bored of, or maybe it made me a little mad/annoyed, but that was more like deciding it wasn't the effort than being enraged

When I was about 13 years old back in 2003-ish, I was on the last boss of Midnight Club 2 on Xbox, pumped that I was about to unlock the best car in the game and finally finish the campaign completely.
After hours and HOURS of retries I finally come really close to the finish line in 1st place, just for the boss to slam into my car, make me crash and lose the whole race.
I was so angry that I took the game disc to the bathroom, bent the disc as much as I could, then took a knife to stab and slice the disc to take out my rage.
I haven't played the game since then but I wouldn't be against trying again someday, lol.
Also learned that day that snapping a game disc in half is just a myth. They don't actually snap in half, they just bend. I tried snapping it in half but it doesn't actually do that.

A few weeks back I was playing this game called Rain City. Neat little puzzle game.

The save/load setup was such that it didn't specifically say "save" or "load", but rather had an up-arrow for save, and a down-arrow for load. I'm guessing the thinking there was "upload"/"download", but it confused me at first and I accidentally reloaded an earlier save and lost a bunch of progress. Played up past the part where I fucked up my save, and I encountered a game-breaking glitch. Reloaded an earlier save and started playing through a THIRD time, went to save my progress before quitting, and accidentally reloaded my earlier save and lost my progress again lol

Said "Fuck this game!" Don't know if I'll bother finishing it.

Anger not really. However some games just feel like they are life sinks. I mean fallout 76. You have to play every day for challenges or you essentially give up progress. Or Dragon age inquisition. Having to send troops out on the table mode and having to wait real world hours or days for it to complete. If I wanted to wait for energy replenishment I would play freemiums on mobile

LoZ: Link's Awakening.

Well, this probably isn't what you mean, but for whatever weird reason, the game was permanently bugged. Like, on the file select screen, only the animated player icon showed, and there was nothing you could do. I got it from a neighbor who had given up on it, gave it to me for nothing. I tried messing around with the game for a while, did everything I knew how (which really didn't amount to much), and eventually I gave up too, throwing the game up in the air and letting it crash into the street.

Maybe it was morbid curiosity, but I couldn't help but put it back in the GameBoy and see what had become of the game.

It was fixed.

Yeah. I remember playing No Mercy on N64. There was some story cage match against Stone Cold. I beat the shit out of him for 20 minutes. Tons of specials. It was just a major beatdown. Every time I so much as touched the cage, he'd stir and get up, then make sure I fell back down. This process looped for some time. I would even just leave him laying on the ground and time it, and he'd sometimes be there still for a couple minutes. More than enough time than it would take to climb out of the cage and win. Except touching the cage insta-revives him. Every time. So, at about the 90 minute mark, not exaggerating, I somehow managed to get near the top of the cage and he was still down. Then, the game remembered it was supposed to totally fuck me, and it put Stone Cold in fast-forward mode. He literally was moving at double the game speed, climbs up underneath me so I fall into the ring, then just hops out of the cage and wins. Obviously some sort of glitch was going on. I yelled. Took the game out of the N64, went outside, and smashed it against the driveway.

That reminds me, I had Skyrim originally on PS3 (now I have like 10 copies on various platforms lol) and the game was an absolute shit show on PS3 when it first released. I lost like 500+hours in that game across three characters, kept losing the characters to corrupted save files. Have yet to finish the main story missions even though I've since played extensively on other systems. I like the game a lot, probably finish it someday but losing all that progress over and over and having to repeat bits of the game I'd rather not play again definitely kills some of my motivation

Except for right now (and possibly some or multiple points afterwards): Monster recruitment & development systems are a great addition to games, making even mundane games fun, as in ToS: Dawn of the New World, and even bad games at least tolerable, as in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Final Fantasy X-2's international version is also leagues better because of the inclusion of such a system.

This is a difficult question to answer. Like world of warcraft BC, I was in 4 separate guilds that broke on the brick wall called Kael'thas and after the 4th I promptly unsubbed and didn't even consider coming back until the next expansion. Does that count as dropping entirely? I don't think so but I think it's close.

What about a game like Magna Carta? It had, what I call, a nearly unplayable battle system. I couldn't even bring myself to clear the first combat zone (first map? not sure what to call it). I was upset because it was a waste of money and I didn't even get 30 minutes of gameplay out of it but there has been a handful of games that I tried and just couldn't get into like Eternal Ring but I don't have exceptionally negative feelings toward either of these games, not like the pure rage I felt towards Kael'thas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta:_Crimson_Stigmata
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Ring

How about getting mislead like back in the day before Square released FF12 and I knew they could make bad games picking this up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unlimited_Saga having no clue Square could make something so bad.

Then there is weird stuff like Fable 3 the game was awful, legitimately one of the worst games ever made at that production value. But I finished it because it was impossible to lose and didn't have anything "better" to do at the time.

It's very rare for me to completely quit a game. I might take a long break, but I've completed the vast majority of games I own and I usually come back to a game that I put down out if frustration with a fresher mindset later. However, Cuphead is hard as fuck and I can't make it past the second islands, let alone beat the game, no matter how hard I try. It doesn't frustrated me so much as it challenges me, and I haven't technically quit because I come back every now and again, but with concentrated effort I don't think I'll ever be completing that game.

Yes. Most recent example would be Breath of the Wild -- I found it so annoying for me to play with its tissue paper weaponry breaking every 1-2 fights, and not knowing how difficult it wanted to be (mainly enemies that were either "cannon fodder" tier or "will drop you to 0-1 HP in one hit" tier), that I bailed on it not long after the "tutorial"

I honestly don't understand what makes the game so acclaimed; to me it's a prime example of a video game that seemingly forgot that its primary purpose is to be fun.

Probably. Offhand, I think one might have been McFarlane's Evil Prophecy -- can't remember exactly (although somebody from another board mentioned having worked on the game in some capacity and told me that the devs stopped putting effort in) -- which included a lot of nonsense like killing enemy quotas or finding some RNG crap. I called it quits pretty quickly because the mechanics were annoying.

I guess LostMagic also got frustrating towards the end, mostly because the fights were all timed for no fucking good reason. Other things pissed me off, but I didn't quit it because it pissed me off. Oracle of Ages, for instance, annoyed me with the dance routines. However, I quit it because for whatever reason I couldn't finish the Goron Dance and I just gave up trying.

Couldn't finish that game, either. Combat system largely to blame

Back on PS3/360 there was a game called Damnation... Got through maybe two or three levels before I gave up. Game is trash. If you look up gameplay without knowing what system it released on, you might mistake it for a late-gen PS2 game. Not that graphics are the most important thing, but it's a pretty good indicator of how awful this game is when you consider it released on PS3 and definitely wasn't shooting for a "retro" feel...

I loved that game but I'm not gonna lie, if you're not looking forward to exploring the humongous map and grinding your way through the game, you're probably not gonna have fun. I will say that the game has an extended introduction/tutorial. If you're not even really put of the first area yet I'd give it a little more time to see if it clicks

There are a lot of neat side quests dotting the map, and I thoroughly enjoyed the wanted system/fighting the mercenaries, but the game definitely has a lot of rinse/repeat to it in "go here, clear this fort, do these quests, go next area, clear this encampment, do these quests..." Like I said, I found it enjoyable but I totally see how daunting and unfun it can be if you can't get into a groove with the gameplay loop

I was playing Crystalis via the NES thingy on the Switch, and I let the Switch's battery die while it was in sleep mode. Turns out the saves I'd made within the game itself didn't survive that, and my only remaining save was the save state I'd made several hours prior. I'm open to going back to it eventually, but that's very much turned me off of it for a while. That's not really the game's fault, though.

The Witcher 3. Combat is awful IMO. Sometime I might try it again on easy mode just for the story.

Fallout: New Vegas' "Dead Money" expansion.

The Metro games. The gas mask/filters seemed to force me into playing the game at a certain pace and that turned me off.

Far Cry 2. Weapon breakage, respawning enemies, stale combat. Blah.

I don't think "pissed off" is the best way to describe it, but...

I always hated Kratos in the God of War series. I remember the first game being forced to push a prisoner in a cage up a ramp so he could be incinerated as a sacrifice as he begged you not to and really hating that and not wanting to do it. Then the 2nd game having a minigame bashing some defenseless priest's head into stone until he bled enough to solve a puzzle.
I didn't even want Kratos to succeed in his journey, he was such a fucking bastard and not even at least affably evil. All the while emo moaning about what happened to his family as he continues committing far worse atrocities.
I put up w/ it b/c I liked the game play.
But then after GoW2, I discovered Bayonetta, which is just plain better in every way.
Then GoW3 came out, I got it, and the combat felt so basic and dull after Bayonetta. Then at the start, you're storming Mount Olympus to deicide the pantheon, probably causing all kinds of collateral destruction to the mortal world, just b/c "durr, mah revenge!" and...
...I just turned the game off.
And never went back to it.

It was just like, "fuck this shit, it's not even remotely fun anymore."

myst 3DS.
practically unplayable, perhaps the worst port of a game ever.

lego marvel superheroes 2(switch).
too many controls on a single button.
I really hated how the jump button worked: sort tap to jump, hold for a few seconds to launch, but does nothing between that, so if you're used to the usual "press slightly longer to jump higher" that is common in many other games you can't jump.
vertical camera controls tied to altitude controls when flying, so you need to go down to see if you flew up high enough to land on a platform.
hopping on a fast travel train with unskippable animation tied to a generic action button, I quit after my 3rd rollercoaster ride to the other side of the map while trying to activate something next to a monorail platform.
oh, and how could I forget the motorcycles that are too weak to go up the slight slopes in timed motorcycle races.

Mostly, the game comes into its own once you can really start exploring, since exploration is probably the thing the game does best. Weapon durability improves a lot (mostly, weapons last longer, though I do feel that the durability system hurt more than it helped), you get enough health to tank a few more hits (honestly, I find that to be a problem with the early game of pretty much every 2D Zelda), you get to see some interesting stuff... I definitely wouldn't say that you have to get toward the end to have a better time with it. It picks up pretty quickly after the tutorial.

Borderlands 3 when they said Tannis was a siren. Already hated the writing before then, but that was the nail in the coffin.
