Well, not that I chose what to think of, but you know what I meant. 1: Its one of the songs I know I undervalued slightly. Id decided the very top level of songs would be reserved exclusively for songs that I was considering for first place and when it came to BMTH songs, I was obsessed with Happy Song. There was a 0% chance of Doomed getting ranked above Happy Song at the time, so it had to be a step below it. Im not sure if Id definitely take Doomed over Happy Song these days, but its certainly a lot closer than the scores and placements indicate. 2: I had to give it a bit of an additional writeup a little while ago, to clarify that the nominated version (like the link posted above) isnt exactly Doomedits Overture and Doomed together in one video, so you get some violin orchestra for a few minutes before Doomed actually starts. Not exactly a bad thing, but since I was just talking about the song, of course its still on my mind. 3: Probably the song from the ranking that Ive been listening to the most lately. There was a point where Happy Song was the most listened, Avantasias Runaway Train was an obsession for a week or so, and lately Doomeds been getting a lot of play. Soo... yeah. This is a random song that wasnt really nominated anywhere. Player 0 made a joking reference to the album it was from (he nominated Trilogy by The Weeknd, but there was also an ELP album named Trilogy), but as far as Im aware, he hadnt actually listened to the album or had any expectation that I would actually listen to it. The punchline is that he may have accidentally gave me my favorite song from this post-ranking. On one level, this seems like a song I shouldnt like. Its definitely dealing with subject matter thats way too heavy for methe song opens with a lynch mob & ends with our hero murdering a cop, so ya know, not exactly something I want to talk about. This is the type of song that gets a self-deprecating and sarcastic writeup along the lines of why are you asking someone that refers to herself as a delusional bunny her thoughts on racism and vigilante justice? What has gone so wrong in your life that you have wound up in a position where youre not only interacting with me, but actually expect me to have anything relevant or thoughtful to say in response to this?? So... putting aside the subject matter and trying to only speak of the song itself: A: I like how it tells a very complete three act story in its rather brief runtime. Its under three and a half minutes, has two instrumental break, and still manages to get a lot of storytelling here. Theres no wasted time. (On some level, it reminds me of The Diesel Street Kings - Lord of the Breeze from last years topic; while theyre not particularly similar, theyre both in that classic rock genre & feature male singers that are more narrating a story than singing.) B: No repetition at allno choruses, no repeated lines, it helps it stand out from all the more traditional verse-chorus-verse-chorus songs. C: The outro of the song is so cartoonish and ludicrous that it always makes me smile. Just listen to how toony that gunshot sound effect is and how wildly energetic that piano solo is. Its just so absurd and out of place. D: On a related note, the music itself isnt very heavy or serious. While the subject matter is heavy, theres some levity to the music itself. And it all adds up to what I would say is my favorite song of the post-ranking-listening thus far. It was second place in the initial version of the list (based only on first impressions), it was second place in the final version of the rankings, and its the second valid answer I thought of for these posts. Anyway, I love the song, but I cant think of anything new to say about it. I love cartoons, I love Sonic, I love happy dancing & singing Robotnik, this is very much my type of thing. ...I suppose nows a good place to say that I probably undervalued Hedgehog Stew when I listened to it earlier in the post ranking. Ive actually gone back to listen to it a fair number of times & would be listening to it more frequently if it were on Spotify. I have to go out of my way to listen to things on YouTube, so it hasnt quite gotten played on an endless loop like some other songs that are easier to listen to, but its definitely much closer to Win The Race in quality than I gave it credit for. ==================== ==================== 3. I know there was originally a three way tie for last: There was a Tool song that was at the bottom for inaccurate reasons, which was later moved up the list a bit. Its definitely one of the more memorable songs because, of all my rankings, it is the only song to have its score and ranking changed in the middle of a topic after being eliminated. But I didnt think about it as one of the first five and dont really want to talk about it, outside of referencing it here. I Run Rap, which is definitely in last place and I stand by its position. And then there were a lot of songs by The Weeknd near the bottom of the list. I think, after the first listen, there was something stupid like 16 Weeknd songs in the bottom 20 songs or something? I eventually mellowed on quite a few of his songs, with several of them being moved way up the list (pretty sure one of them raised over 500 rankings, didnt it?), but there were still some songs of his that I hated. ...Im just not entirely sure which songs were which... I think Initiation was the one tied for last place and House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls was also really low ranking. Though I still hate HoB/GTC, so maybe it deserved to be in last place? Or maybe it actually was? goes to check Right, right, Initiation was in last place. Then Kiryu Coco ED, which was followed immediately by seven The Weeknd songs dropping in the same post. House of Balloons was just kinda in the middle of that cluster. Its interesting that when my mind tries to jump to a song I hate, it picks House of Balloons when there are decidedly lower ranking songs on the list. ...Now I almost want to relisten to the lower ranked songs and see if I still want them lower than HoB, but Ill save revisiting songs for some later date. ...As for this song: Too explicit for my tastes and your mind wants to leave, but you cant go is probably the lyric that put me the most on edge from the entire topic. Which, again, raises questions on how anything (other than I Run Rap) managed to score lower than it. (On a lighter note, there are definitely songs of his that I like. I actually nominated one of his songs (Pray For Me) at one of Jesses topic and Ive listened to his song with Kenny G a fair number of times ; and when I was playing Fuser, Blinding Lights was a pretty decent song to add to mixes. I know there was originally a three way tie for last: There was a Tool song that was at the bottom for inaccurate reasons, which was later moved up the list a bit. Its definitely one of the more memorable songs because, of all my rankings, it is the only song to have its score and ranking changed in the middle of a topic after being eliminated. But I didnt think about it as one of the first five and dont really want to talk about it, outside of referencing it here. I Run Rap, which is definitely in last place and I stand by its position. And then there were a lot of songs by The Weeknd near the bottom of the list. I think, after the first listen, there was something stupid like 16 Weeknd songs in the bottom 20 songs or something? I eventually mellowed on quite a few of his songs, with several of them being moved way up the list (pretty sure one of them raised over 500 rankings, didnt it?), but there were still some songs of his that I hated. ...Im just not entirely sure which songs were which... I think Initiation was the one tied for last place and House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls was also really low ranking. Though I still hate HoB/GTC, so maybe it deserved to be in last place? Or maybe it actually was? goes to check Right, right, Initiation was in last place. Then Kiryu Coco ED, which was followed immediately by seven The Weeknd songs dropping in the same post. House of Balloons was just kinda in the middle of that cluster. Its interesting that when my mind tries to jump to a song I hate, it picks House of Balloons when there are decidedly lower ranking songs on the list. ...Now I almost want to relisten to the lower ranked songs and see if I still want them lower than HoB, but Ill save revisiting songs for some later date. ...As for this song: Too explicit for my tastes and your mind wants to leave, but you cant go is probably the lyric that put me the most on edge from the entire topic. Going to go backwards through the list for no apparent reason: Dont recognize any of the artist names, so this should be interesting. Coeur De Pirate - Carry On: 70 points. I like this one quite a bit. Valravn - Kelling: Very different. We dont usually get many Icelandic songs and the instruments are definitely harsher than, say, a pop song. Probably 60 points? I have a hard time grasping how much I like it because its so unexpected, but I dont think Id let something this unique drop below the 60 point level. Alekos - Departure: 54 points. Its nice, but it didnt leave much of an immediate impression. I like it, but not enough to really remember anything other than a vague sense of niceness. Perotin - Beata viscera (monophonic conductus): 52 points. I like the idea herethese types of chants and sacred music are a genre that are a once a year rarity to these topics (the all-consuming hatred I had towards classical music back at the first topic is likely responsible for this, even though Ive mellowed considerably on the topic lately)but Im not quite feeling it. Its not quite impactful enough to hit a level of spirituality that I love, but its also different enough that I generally enjoyed my time with it. Chon - Suda: 54 points. Its pretty nice. The more energetic parts of the song (particularly those right before said outro) kinda remind me of Mario Kart; it just feels like the type of thing that would play on a somewhat goofy beach racing sequence. Either way, it managed to be generally pleasing throughout it's fifteen minute runtime and didn't have any particular low points or moments that I didn't like, so it's a well made song. No real progress on archiving things, decided to take a few days off and rest before the endless barrage of VGMC songs and the second solo topic isn't as interesting to revisit--I don't think my tastes changed as drastically since that topic, so while the older topics were full of "wow, I can't believe that song got -that- placement" moments, this one's just a lot of "yeah, that sounds about right" tedious data entry. I actually like the way it sounds, but it requires a bit more effort on everyones parttheyd have to list how long each nomination or album is and keep track of the total time, but its a gimmick I havent personally done & it doesnt incentivize or punish any particular nomination strategy; going with albums or a custom playlist filled with unique songs, you have the same length of time to play with. But I also dont want to discourage getting a lot of nominators by asking too much of people, so Im kinda hesitant on it. Does it sound like something anyone here would want to try? *2: Automatically including a bunch of songs from past rankingsis it too* self-indulgent?** As Ive said a lot recently, I want to revisit the 200 Mega Man song ranking I did with Se7en & my first solo ranking. [I just kinda made up numbers for the sheet.] So, I think itd be nice to see how my current views impact things and to actually give these songs a proper score. General Points In Favor It wouldnt delay the main ranking or take much time; since I have the full list of songs, itd just be something I listen to and assign scores/write-ups to over the coming months whenever I feel like working on it. Having familiar songs I already know gives me something easy to work with while Im playing with formatting and deciding exactly how I want the topic to look & how I want to organize my notes, and so forth.
