80 minutes feels a bit low; I'd still like people to be able to nominate an album (if they want to) and still have room to play around with extra nominations. Two hours sounds like a good compromise... looking into it a bit, even a few of the Order nominations from this topic came in at under two hours, so most people would either get more songs or be unimpacted anyway.

(I hadn't noticed both Live albums are less than an hour long, so it's still possible to get two studio albums in at the reduced time.)

I'm definetly still working on a list of all nominations, will be done before the next topic. Need to do a few more things to make it easier to read and what not... not much sense entering more data until it's an easy-to-use format.

Speaking of the list of previous nominations, does anyone have any thoughts on how I could make it easier to read or more convenient in some way? I don't have a lot of experience on this stuff:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11EyHgbDCHNZd86SwetcXppwR9vEDi7W6owS9dbrmfb8/edit?usp=sharing

(Only covers the Mega Man topic, the first ranking, and a very small percentage of the second; still very in progress, but gives an example of how it might look).

Right now, I've got it sorted alphabetically by nominator--so anyone who just wants to know what they personally nominated can easily look through their past nominations without having to scroll through the entire list.

...also, is the "song ranking" column a bit superfluous? I feel like the Score tab showing the song's most recent score gives enough indication on how the song did, leaving the rankings to just kinda take up space.

]Could probably remove the links to archived writeups too, to be quite honest. That would certainly speed up the data entry considerably and I'm not sure the links are of any benefit to anyone in the first place.]

Yeah, fair enough. Also, in retrospect, pointing out songs I've lowered my opinion of completely unprompted would be... pointlessly cruel? So, I'll just go ahead and scrap that idea. Thank you both.

maybe you could do a side project where you just talk about songs from topic 1 you've completely changed your mind about? i do think that would be quite interesting, really. you could stick to songs you used to hate and now like and not discuss songs you used to like and now hate if you don't want to come off as pointlessly cruel.

It's possible. I figure if I insist on doing something with the old songs, I could just type up everything relevant in advance and then just paste those in the sign-up topic periodically while I'm working on the actual ranking. So instead of just a generic "listened to 10 songs today" message, there'd be a "listened to 10 songs today and also here's some new thoughts on an old song" message. So there'd at least be some content while people are waiting for the actual ranking to start.

Just might be too much work for what amounts to filler text. So I'll think about it? If I'm still interested in going over the old songs and talking about them after I'm done with everything I need to do, then that's probably the least intrusive method of handling it. No promises though.

And I'll definitely keep adding the Rankings to the sheet then. Will probably remove the links to old writeups unless someone specifically wants them around though; definitely the most time consuming part and I'm not particularly excited about copying another 800 links over to the sheet anyway.

Okay, old writeup links removed and sheet updated with all songs from the second topic. Songs nominated multiple times have only their most recent score recorded to avoid data overload.

...will start working on the 631 from the third topic in the near-ish future.

The sheet is finally complete*! It also now has three tabs so you can view it sorted by Nominator, by Artist/Source, or by Score.

*Flamander/Glacier seems to be going by cathode these days, so I'll update his name later tonight. I think that's the last step I have.

going through all the tool songs that raetsel ranked, i got a newfound appreciation for third eye. it's probably my favorite song by the band now.

if all tool songs were as good as third eye, i would probably like them as much as steiner does!

I didn't want to derail the ranking topic (or really go on record with this statement), but after listening to The ArchAndroid, I do have to say this somewhere:

Regardless of personal feelings, I have to admit that Kevin Barnes is quite talented and his surprise appearance turned out to be one of the album's highlights.

make the bus is a good song but it's not one of my favorites on the archandroid. i like most songs on hissing fauna, are you the destroyer? (not sure if you ever did finish that album) better. but perhaps i'm too harsh on the song because i think, being in of montreal's style, it's a bit jarring in the context of that album.

i love the archandroid, btw!

I don't think I finished the album after getting to that one song... can't recall any other song on the album either (other than "Cato As A Pun", the actually nominated song), since I only listened to them once a few years ago.

I might try listening to the other songs again at some point.

ok, i'm still slowly working my way through the list of songs and i do so have some comments:

veracocha - carte blanche - these two guys are from my country, nice to see them get representation in this topic. i didn't know that they were known outside of the netherlands but i'm not surprised; trance/EDM is one of our bigges tmusical export products. good song.

pat metheny group - the roots of coincidence - i actually listened to the entire imaginary day album, which i had never heard before (i'm reasonably familiar with pat metheny but he's made a ton of stuff and there's a lot of it i still haven't heard). excellent album. as for the roots of coincidence specifically, given that mycro is often negative about the electric guitar, i thought it was interesting that he picked a song where metheney plays a quite lengthy, rocking electric guitar solo. great song with great playing by everyone involved.

currently at #292 so i'm past the halfway point. as slow as i'm going, i am making some progress, at least!

the electric guitar is actually part of why it's uhh, my favorite pat metheny song! i LOVE electric guitar when the music is the right type of composition for me (when it is, it's an enhancement); but it's definitely an instrument that depends on that, but i wouldn't be a "prog metal" fan if i actually disliked electric guitar in general haha

yeah, i didn't think you hated all music with electric guitar in it, just seemed to me that when a song was really focused on the instrument, you would often complain that it "detracts from other instruments you would rather be listening to." that's why i was pleasantly surprised to see you pick a song that's so electric guitar focused!

didn't make any progress with listening to the list but since i've talked about a bunch of european VGM composers in this topic before, i'd like to mention one i had not mentioned yet: ben daglish. he was a british composer - he sadly passed away from lung cancer in 2018. he did the soundtrack for the commodore 64 version of the last ninja (not to be confused with the NES version, which is actually a port of the last ninja 2).

Oh hey. It's been a while since I listened to the soundtrack, but I remember liking it. Skimming the tracks rather quickly, I think I was most drawn to the Dungeon theme which is quite distinctive.

Though it sounds more like a derelict spaceship theme than a dungeon one to me, it is an interesting soundscape.

Honestly? I don't know yet. Super Robot Wars 30 comes out soon and I'm really looking forward to doing a blind playthrough of it as soon as possible and don't want to open nominations until I'm finished. Which... kinda makes it hard to give a time frame, since I have no idea how long that will take.

Sorry. Wish I had something more specific to offer, but I love SRW and can't pretend I'll focus on anything else when it comes out, so plans are kinda on hold.

Thank you! I'm doing fairly well at the moment and I'm finally just about caught up on everything I wanted to do. There was a new "Make a Good Mega Man Level", Deltarune's second chapter, and Super Robot Wars 30 that all came out in rapid succession... but I'm done with the first two & I'm close to reaching 100% completion on SRW; it takes two playthroughs, but I'm pretty far into the second and will be finished relatively soon.

There'll eventually be more DLC with what's basically the actual final boss and I'll wind up doing a third playthrough eventually... but there's no time frame for when the real ending will come out (much less how much it'll cost) and it'll probably be late next year before I feel up to doing another run anyway.

I'm feeling in the mood to get back to ranking things and could make a nomination topic any time basically. I'm thinking of possibly opening the topic on Saturday and leaving noms open for a month--I figure between people likely needing more time to get in noms & how awkwardly close it is to the holidays, I should make sure the deadline is well after New Years.

...waiting until after all the holidays probably makes more sense, but then I might get distracted by something else.

Thoughts? Anyone else got an upcoming project that I should wait for--since this is all rather spur-of-the-moment, I'd gladly delay things to not get in anyone's way? Is this a particularly bad month to spring noms on anyone?
