I disagree with this framing

That's like saying Hillary losing 2016 was an overall victory for Dems in 2020. There's too many variables at play.

I'll rephrase

Abrams losing was not a win for Dems, what Abrams did after was. Two separate but related events. It is still possible Abrams (and the other organizers in Georgia) would still flip Georgia if she had won governor.

I guess several Dem senators have said that they won't pack the court. But still, SCOTUS may feel some pressure these two years not to push very far at the risk of upsetting them. Much like how SCOTUS buckled under pressure to FDR.

I don't think this mattered really. Moderates don't change their mind - just like everyone else. Everyone who voted in both Senate races voted the same way each time. Dems won because they did outreach to expand their voting base while Trump suppressed his own by claiming it was rigged from the start.

This is a really negative and dangerous viewpoint for the health of our democracy but it does appear to have carried the day tonight based on the striking closeness of the 3 races (these two plus Trump/Biden). I think this viewpoint has been largely contradicted by election results over the past few years but tonight is a win for it.

It literally was.

Trump is really bad for this country but he's been especially bad for the Republican party. Since we have a 2 party system, that makes him really good for Democrats.

This is pretty scary for this country though. Democrat rule is not good. Pelosi is not going to fix anything, especially the centralization of Congress, and the erosion of checks and balances. The questionably conservative court is our only hope.

Was going to post this last night but I was too tired after watching the needle for ~6 hours and just crashed.

The real irony in the Georgia runoffs yesterday is that the runoff system in GA was specifically and intentionally put into law to limit the political power of black Americans.

https://www.vox.com/21551855/georgia-ossoff-perdue-loeffler-warnock-runoff-election-2020-results

To summarize: GA had a kind of mini-electoral college system in place state-wide designed to, like the real one, amplify white rural voters' power at the expense of urban black voters, that got struck down by SCOTUS in 1962. The runoff model then was proposed and enacted by an avowed segregationist in 1963 who was mad that he lost his election in 1958 when the white vote split among several candidates and openly blamed "Negro bloc voting" so when he got back into office four years later he looked across the old Confederacy States and adopted the runoff model many of them were using to force a majority vote scenario where the white vote wouldn't split like they did when it cost him an election.

And in case you want to go, "Well, how can you be sure it was racial!?!?!" don't worry, this guy decided to clear the record up after the fact to shoot down that kind of willful ignorance:

Denmark Groover (the segregationist in question who pushed for the implementation of GA runoffs)
"I was a segregationist. I was a county unit man. But if you want to establish if I was racially prejudiced, I was. If you want to establish that some of my political activity was racially motivated, it was."

For the record: Vox admits it's impossible to know for sure if the runoff system actually suppressed black representation in politics (but the Bush 41 DOJ thought it did and actually tried to get it overturned in 1990, though obviously did not succeed!) because you can't run the counter-factuals of how such an alternate timeline would behave but the fact that it was implemented with that intent is clear as day.

like personally i'm curious on the exit data to see which factor it was the most - in my head it's Trump areas turnout decrease first, people mad at Mitch and the GOP second, black turnout third.

In Ireland before independence they introduced the Single Transferrable Vote first in some constituencies, then for the whole country, to specifically benefit the unionists and block the republicans. Ireland ended up fully adopting it after independence anyway, and now it has arguably the best and most democratic electoral system in the entire world. It happens sometimes: you luck into progressivism because of bad motivations.

I'm sure there are senators crazy enough to do it but it would be pretty insane to see a senator filibuster a $2000 stimulus check after everything that's happened.

Anyways I think they could do it through budget reconciliation, which bypasses the filibuster.
Nope. All you need is a senator from a very safe state to do it. That Paul guy or whatever from Kentucky is probably a lock for it.

Now would 10 republican senators cross over? Maybe. We will see.

Budget reconciliation is almost definitely not an option based on how I believe that works.

From a historical perspective, I believe this is the first time since Herbert Hoover that a President first entered office with total control of government (President, Senate, House) and then ended up with the opposition party gaining total control by the end of their only term.

Bush 43's 2nd term played out this way but Trump is the first one-termer since Hoover to do this.

Lol...I didnt ask who she is, I know exactly who she is.

I asked why shes getting thanked so hard, specifically.
I think that people here and on twitter tend to idolize people a lot. Comey for a bit. Avernatti or whatever. Fauci. Abrams. There is probably a ton of different examples. Mueller. Etc.

I think they are always looking for a hero. A president who was running it up in the primaries everywhere with African American vote wins with increased African American turnout in states, despite winning less of a share of African American votes than predecessors. Did Abrams probably help? Probably. Is she the reason why he won and the senators won? Probably not.

Trump lost the Presidential race because of split tickets. The Georgia Senators likely won because depressed Republican turnout because of Trump.

I don't think Abrams likely contributed to either of these, though she did help with turning out more Democrats.

Under the Congressional Review Act, Congress can now repeal last minute rule changes by the Trump administration at federal agencies like EPA, DOJ, DOE, etc. (the last 6-7 months or so.)

CRA resolutions can not be filibustered so it just requires the 50+1 in the Senate.

Jakyl, I can see both sides in the PA case. I believe eventually the Senator will be seated though. Seems to be a rules argument. Enough votes that supposedly didn't follow the rules with undated voted that were received in time that would turn the election if not allowed. The PA supreme court allowed them. Which should be the end of it.

Republican is trying to take it up federally, which I am not sure can be filed federally because it's a state election.

So, there is a reason to wait, but ultimately it will be the Democratic Senator I would believe.

2022 senate elections -
Possible republican flips: Kelly in Arizona, Warnock in Georgia, Masto in Nevada, Hassan in NH
Possible democratic flips: Open in NC, Open in Pennsylvania, Johnson in Wisconsin

I think NH, NC and Wisconsin are both fairly unlikely.

I was hoping for some way democrats expand the majority so someone like Sinema or Tester is the swing vote, both of which would be far more preferable to Manchin. But looking at this it looks more likely dems lose seats so maybe I should just "enjoy" Manchin as the swing vote for now.
