Well yeah, I know it will have to wait until they're actually seated, but part of me wonders if this was the Dems trusting internal polling that they could win the runoffs, so they settled for the $600 for now knowing they'd control the Senate going forward.

It's been truly astounding how awful the attack ads against Warnock have been. Awful as in pathetically bad. They tried tons of angles but nothing stuck. I don't envy them having to make attack ads against a black reverand in GA when your own candidate is a white wasp woman who took photos with the KKK.

Perdue put out ads that digitally enlarged Ossof's nose as an attempt to play the anti-semetism card, and he still somehow came at this with better game than her.

i am just imagining mcsally systematically running for every office in arizona until literally every last one is held by a democrat on every level: federal, state, and local

So is it baked in that whoever the vice president selects is also the majority leader in a 50-50 scenario? Because the whole majority leader deciding what actually gets voted on has proven to be pretty important as of late

Yeah, "Majority Leader" is an invention of the Senate itself and an actual tie is rare so you don't have many case examples but it happened back in 2001. You had a 50-50 Senate in January, and from the 3rd to the 20th, Dems had control because Gore was still VP. Then it flipped when Cheney became VP. (It then flipped back when a Republican defected to caucus with the Dems as an independent. Then flipped again when a Dem Senator died and the Senator appointed in his place chose to caucus with neither major party and Republicans flipped a seat in a special election leading to a 48(+1)-50-1 majority.)

I'm sure there are senators crazy enough to do it but it would be pretty insane to see a senator filibuster a $2000 stimulus check after everything that's happened.

Anyways I think they could do it through budget reconciliation, which bypasses the filibuster.

I do not doubt that Trump's antics certainly helped, but I was still expecting a republican victory tonight.

I mean it is a special election, in a state democrats won by the thinnest or margins, at a time when democrats now control the government. I keep going back to things like 2009, but Scott Brown won in Massachusetts to fill Kennedy's seat. I know stuff was already happening at that time, but there were a lot of factors here that would seem to help republicans.
