Was going to post this last night but I was too tired after watching the needle for ~6 hours and just crashed.

The real irony in the Georgia runoffs yesterday is that the runoff system in GA was specifically and intentionally put into law to limit the political power of black Americans.

https://www.vox.com/21551855/georgia-ossoff-perdue-loeffler-warnock-runoff-election-2020-results

To summarize: GA had a kind of mini-electoral college system in place state-wide designed to, like the real one, amplify white rural voters' power at the expense of urban black voters, that got struck down by SCOTUS in 1962. The runoff model then was proposed and enacted by an avowed segregationist in 1963 who was mad that he lost his election in 1958 when the white vote split among several candidates and openly blamed "Negro bloc voting" so when he got back into office four years later he looked across the old Confederacy States and adopted the runoff model many of them were using to force a majority vote scenario where the white vote wouldn't split like they did when it cost him an election.

And in case you want to go, "Well, how can you be sure it was racial!?!?!" don't worry, this guy decided to clear the record up after the fact to shoot down that kind of willful ignorance:

Denmark Groover (the segregationist in question who pushed for the implementation of GA runoffs)
"I was a segregationist. I was a county unit man. But if you want to establish if I was racially prejudiced, I was. If you want to establish that some of my political activity was racially motivated, it was."

For the record: Vox admits it's impossible to know for sure if the runoff system actually suppressed black representation in politics (but the Bush 41 DOJ thought it did and actually tried to get it overturned in 1990, though obviously did not succeed!) because you can't run the counter-factuals of how such an alternate timeline would behave but the fact that it was implemented with that intent is clear as day.
