I don't really know how to rate the year, the lockdown life is good with me - except my brother exploding over a terrible relationship and becoming an absolute monster to the family for an entire year that we ended up being locked down with

but it's not worse than years I've been depressed through so at least I have my answer to this topic

Pretty much this. I live in Florida so COVID has been more of a mild inconvenience than anything else

The final year I was with my ex wife was comfortably the worst year of my life for a whole plethora of reasons beyond just being in a dying marriage

Well working from home was fantastic, saved me 2 hours each day that would be wasted on driving to work

But I gained a lot of weight. 2019 was a heavy diet year with great result and 2020 made it all come back. I am talking about 14 kg. This is bad
I also lost a lot of money in the stock market crash which also sucked
I also caught covid and I still feel the symptoms like 3 months after it happened so yay?

Work also sucks, most of the co-workers I had left this year. Got a new shitty boss. Got a pay increase but it doesn't really matter, the job still sucks

So kinda yes?

2005: said one of the most unforgivable things I ever have to someone. Got sexually assaulted, and laughed off because "hehehe you're a dude, bro"
2010: second kidney stone. Stepdad got brain tumor diagnosis (same thing that killed McCain)
2011: stepdad died and the following rageball persona got a lot of hateful online bannings. One of my two cats also died.
2016: Lost one of my two jobs, had to go on food stamps, other cat died, Trump elected.

This is bad, top 3 worst ones behind 2016 and 2011 though.

oops.. but yeah, I'd treat "a little below average" as a good year due to the circumstances

Ive had some shitty years, but this was by far the worst. Came into the year feeling great and productive, ending it just the opposite.

Socially? Yeah.
Mentally? Not quite, but it's up there and set me back on some progress I'd been making with my therapist.
Physically? Again, not quite, but it was definitely a couple steps back.
Financially? No, in fact it's been one of my best.

None of my close loved ones have died, I haven't lost any pets, I haven't lost my job, I didn't have any bad breakups.

Overall it hasn't been great for me personally, but I've had worse years.

Nah 2012 was probs my worse year since leaving High school, 2020 was defo up there as pretty bad tho.

Way better than 2019 for me, but still not great.

my dad died when I was 8, so that year was probably worst, but also it was so long ago that I dont remember the feelings very well anymore

it's definitely the worst i've had although i am blessed with a pretty relaxed life most of the time

Same here. I miss going outside. But I'm missing it less as time goes on, and I really like some aspects of working from home.

My mom died from Pancreatic Cancer and all the covid crap

I'm still not sure though. My mom had been unhappy for a long time and at least Pancreatic Cancer is relatively quick at doing its work and there was a lot of good here too. I think I've had worse years in my 20s. 2011 almost feels like a year I spent actively sabotaging myself. I'm still dealing with poor life decisions made then to this day

This sums it up well. 2020 was surely a disaster on the macro level, between COVID, civil unrest, the recession and everything else. But for me personally, I really can't complain at all. I managed to lead a fulfilling year where I cultivated stronger relationships with key people in my life (safely, of course!), tried various new things (including more exercise than years past) and graduated from a miserable grad school program. Really glad to have that behind me, and since the last year was pretty much fluff, it was just tedious instead of actually stressful.

November and December have left me wondering if the winds of change are blowing in my direction, but the rest of the year was very enjoyable for me.

My personal worst years were 2006, 2011 and 2018 in that order.

depression coming from life circumstances is different (though no less valid) than persistent, chronic depression

being depressed in 2020 sure has been a time but to be honest most of this year is barely on the radar compared to the feelings

It has not been a good year for a lot of people, but it's probably been the best year I have ever had. I've experienced immense personal growth and have fixed up a lot of things about my life that will have repercussions years from now.

Things aren't perfect but I feel better than ever about the direction my life is taking and my potential.
