I'm pro actually giving children that are born free health care. So I'm going to say I'm more "pro life" than people that actually define themselves as pro life while also being pro choice.

Which ironically, not bankrupting people with health care costs for children would probably cause less abortions.

Pro choice, but there should be a penalty for it
I mean yeah I know that for most people this is not taken lightly, and they feel bad for doing this which is punishment enough, but getting to this situation at the first place shows ignorance (not including rape, of course, which is totally not the fault of the victim, also not including "accidents" like a condom breaking)

now this thread is what i call a saturday night! sir, i'm gonna have to give you a citation for not having your politics flag properly displayed on your topic

.

If you really dig into the conversation in private with almost any american, regardless of whether they reflexively say they're "pro-life" or "pro-choice", they all say and believe the same thing

that abortion is sad and should rarely be done, particularly past the first trimester, but there are clearly situations where it's not only sad but also necessary.

what it comes down to is whether the individual trusts women to make this tough appraisal about their life and their fetus's life privately.

the pro-life crowd does not, and is more afraid of a theoretical mustachio-twirling vixen getting deeply pregnant and aborting for jollies. the pro-choice crowd does, and is more afraid of lawmakers not having the nuance to regulate it properly, creating horrific situations where necessary abortions are blocked, or women are brought before weird tribunals after a traumatic decision to abort.

i'm discounting the truly psychotic religious nutjobs that believe jacking off or having your period or wearing a condom is a sin or whatever.

well the mask people are affecting people around them, while the abortion people are making a completely personal choice so yeah I say we stay out of that second situation completely

fining women for having abortions is just going to harm the women least prepared to raise a child. For rich people it would be no big deal, for poor women it would be a serious additional burden on an already difficult situation. Its just cruel.

It should be legal, and the idea of punishing the woman - either explicitly with "fines" or socially with ostracization - is outdated and cruel. No one has an abortion for funsies - the woman is already going through terrible trauma, and the last thing the rest of us should be doing is compounding her misery by treating her like a criminal or an outcast.

I think the only "fine" should be the price of the procedure, which is somewhat high and not something you'd want to incur when birth control methods cost a fraction. Don't really agree with it being covered by insurance or low income programs (aside from rape/health concern things)-- and if everyone had to pay that'd remove the whole "using it as birth control" strawman since there'd be no reason you'd want to as it dwarfs the cost. I do think low income people should be given a "freebie" though with an offer to get a program covered IUD after (with subsequent visits being charged if they don't) just to remove any ignorance concerns and let them evaluate the decision properly after that first reality check.

IUDs are super effective and at the very least covered by insurance (and should ideally be covered by low income stuff if it's not already). Yes some people have some side effects like severe menstrual bleeding but for those people you'd make an exception on abortions not being covered

I think you missed the part where I said low income people should get a freebie and option for a free IUD

If you get pregnant twice in non-rape non-health situations and need abortions twice after they offered you an IUD then you should be held accountable. Buy some birth control that's affordable at even the lowest income bracket, as someone who grew up in it

Everyone is paying the same amount here. Believe it or not rich people don't want to get abortions willy nilly either. The idea is that abortion doesn't become a form of "cheap birth control"

If you're poor you need to be more responsible in general. That's just life dude.
