Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I don't think anyone is satisfied with this movie. I guess I'll say this for Abrams, I don't think anyone could have actually made this movie good.

Hear me out for a minute. Im not saying it would have been good, necessarily, but I think the best person to direct Episode IX would have been......Rian Johnson! After Disney just let him do what he did in TLJ, they might as well have gone all in and let him finish the trilogy. At least then we wouldnt have had to sit through another movie that spent most of its time undoing everything from the previous one.

I honestly dont know. That would have probably been more interesting, but better? The Disney movies were doomed from the second they started filming without a plan.

I forgot to mention this in the TFA and TLJ write-ups, so I'll do it now. Modern humor does not fit in Star Wars. That scene where Poe asks Kylo "Who talks first?" does not fit in Star Wars. TLJ opens with a literal "Yo momma" joke, and that doubly doesn't fit in Star Wars. And TRoS has that "They fly now" scene. It's so, so unfitting.

I thought, Who talks first? worked well actually. I thought it was a fine little establishing moment for both Poe and Kylo. Yo momma was absolutely awful though.

Any time someone acts casually like that in a sci-fi movie, I tend to hate it. It just completely removes any tension from the scene for me. The only people I've seen who can pull it off are Joss Whedon (who still went too far in the MCU, but did it with Buffy) and James Gunn. That said, the "who talks first" one is the best of the three examples I gave, you're right in that.

In TRoS write-up, I forgot to mention the ancient Sith dagger that lines up with the broken remains of the second Death Star. Don't say the Force told the guy who made it what pattern it needs, shut up.

Mon Mothma
Fun fact, Mon Mothma, Aunt Beru, and Leia are the only women in the entire OT. I think there might be a few extras in Cloud City or Mos Eisley, but none of them speak.

Mon Mothma is perfectly serviceable as like a politician-y character who's part of the Rebellion. Not a military leader, but someone who handles the diplomatic stuff. Implicitly either a noblewoman or a politician. She shows up for two minutes, explains things, and then disappears. Very good use of a minor character to expand the universe by implication.

Anti-Lightsaber Weaponry
I hate it.

See, Star Wars has (or should have) a very clear distinction between the mystical magical elements and the physical realistic elements. That's why space ninja wizards wear robes and sandals instead of some kind of super metal armor or whatever. The more objects you have that are designed to interact with space magic, the less magical it becomes. That's why the one iconic Jedi item is a magical sword made out of light. I mean, sure, I acknowledge that in a galaxy with Jedi, it makes sense that people would develop ways to deal with them, but it just robs the Jedi of some of their coolness.

Greedo
MACKLUNKY

Without going into the whole "who shot first" debate, Greedo is great. He's got the perfect "I am a random alien of no importance" design. You take one look at him and the universe is expanded because his very presence implies wacky aliens, and the way he behaves tells you that this universe is full of scummy criminals (unlike, again, Star Trek). Like, Greedo could have easily been a human mobster, but that doesn't expand the universe in quite the same way.

So Bad It's Worse (XKCD)
Accurate. I'll save my XKCD opinions for another time, though.

John Williams
Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter. This is the guy if you need a movie theme, the only big theme I can think of that he didn't do is Lord of the Rings. As impressive as Star Wars' main theme is, though, I think his best main theme work is probably Harry Potter. You listen to that thing and it's unmistakably a whimsical, childish fantasy movie.

Can you imagine Star Wars without the Imperial March or the opening credits theme? ... I can, but it wouldn't be as good.

Hoar Chall Ring Drive Gel
Damn you, whoever keeps hitting random article on Wookieepedia.

As a concept, a random brand of podracing gel makes sense, sure. It gets across the idea of the Star Wars universe having corporate crap just like the real world.

Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure
Trash. You'd think Lucas would have learned his lesson with the Christmas Special, but evidently not.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Never played it. Having just briefly watched a LP of it, it seems like a fairly standard third person shooter from the N64 era. Kind of an ugly game even by the standards of the time, though.

Maz Kanata
Maz Kanata has to be the result of someone saying "What if we had Yoda again?" I know that she's nothing like Yoda other than being a short alien with a wacky skin tone who gives the main character advice, but that has to be it, because I can't think of any other reason why this character would exist.

As far as the Wise Sage Store goes, Maz Kanata is definitely found in the discount aisle. She's just so, so lame, and she has no actual wisdom to impart except "go here" or "here is an item you need." Yes, okay, Yoda also did that, but that was interspersed with actual Jedi knowledge. Hell, you didn't even need her to have the lightsaber. It would have genuinely made more sense if Old Man Han Solo had it, like he found it on the black market during his smuggling, and stole it in case he ever ran into Luke again.

It has to be that someone thought "We'll have a kickass active warrior type to contrast with Yoda's quiet wisdom," and it just doesn't work. There's a scene in TLJ where Poe contacts her and she's just casually shooting a laser gun while telling him to go the casino planet, and I just rolled my eyes.

And the scene where she gives Chewbacca a medal because they forgot to give him one in ANH is just comically stupid. I wonder what George Lucas thought of it?

Rise of the Resistance
The Galaxy's Edge part of Disneyland deserves it own entry, I guess, though I've never been to it. RotR seems... kind of boring? Like, we all know what that one Star Wars ride in Disneyland was like (or at least I do), this just seems like more of the same. I can imagine it being exciting for a kid, though. I just watched it on YouTube.

It's more complex than I was expecting, what with the animatronics, TV screens, and recordings everywhere. It seems like a very complicated ride. I like the droids that "pilot" your escape crafts. The lightsaber cutting through the bulkhead effect is very impressive. This ride paints a pretty poor picture of Kylo Ren, though. He has three chances to get you, and he fumbles all of them. At the end, he's five feet away from you, but he doesn't even have his lightsaber on. Tsk, tsk.

KkH'Oar'Rrhr
So he's a Tusken Raider who's Force-sensitive, and he's part of the tribe Anakin slaughtered, but he survived not due to his Force powers, but because he just happened to be away at the time? Stupid use of writing resources there.

Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
I had to read a synopsis of this movie for this topic. "Many Ewoks are killed." Automatically better than the first film, then.

Twi'leks
I think Twi'leks might be the defining example of Star Trek vs Star Wars philosophy to aliens. Twi'leks have a fantastic design. It's punchy and memorable, it's weird and alien... but they have nothing else. Star Wars doesn't actually care about the aliens, not even as characters, which is why Yoda, Chewbacca, Ackbar, Jabba, Watto, and Jar-Jar are the only aliens with personalities and (implied) backstories in nine movies, and most of them are much thinner than the human characters'. Like, what is Twi'lek culture like? What are their beliefs, their religion? Hell if I know! If Twi'leks were lucky enough to be on Star Trek, they'd at least have had an episode where Kirk destroys an evil computer to save them. I think the only exception might the Gungans, who are... yeesh.

Sy Snootles
A monstrosity. I know she was technically in the original RotJ, but I consider her to be a SE change. Her looooooooong singing number is just a nightmare, as is her design. It's like George Lucas wanted to punish fans.

That Dancer Jabba Feeds to the Rancor
Poor girl. It doesn't even make sense. I assume slave girls are expensive!

Jawas
A fantastic addition to Star Wars. It makes complete sense that there would be desert scavengers, and we don't need to learn anything more about their culture than that humans find them to be annoying.

Star Wars Toys
Everyone knows the story where George Lucas gained personal control of Star Wars toys because no one understood how valuable they were at the time. Cunning move on his part. I suspect George Lucas may secretly be some kind of business genius, even if his writing chops are weak. You ever see those images online of like Targets with a million extra copies of the ST characters, because kids don't care about Rey and Finn? Kids bought ****ing "Lando's Guard" toys, but they won't buy ST toys.

The Droid Attack on the Wookiees
Forehead Jedi brings this up at the last second in a meeting, which completely changes everyone's plans, like they already knew about this happening but just forgot. To paraphrase RLM, this is how disorganized hippies would run a war.

The Battle of Kashyyyk itself is... whatever. Sasquatches fighting robots. The droid armies are one of the weakest elements of the PT. At least when Stormtroopers die, you might feel something because they're still humans, just misguided ones.

Kingdom Hearts
KH is the ultimate example of being too complicated for your own good. The story of this series should have exclusively been that there's a kid from an obscure planet, he finds a spaceship, he goes into space and visits Disney planets, and there's an evil wizard trying to blow up the universe. And that's what it is for one game. Nomura then goes insane. Unlike most series, like, say, Resident Evil or Persona, where the spinoffs either aren't canon or are technically canon but don't really matter, Kingdom Hearts decided that all of the spinoffs are not only canon, they're all crucial to understanding the plot. This leads to all of the infamous attempts at explaining KH lore online. What started as a simple story about a teenage boy trying to rescue his not!girlfriend turns into a mess about clones, time travel, digital mind clones, a guy who can spy on you if you have an X on your clothing, another teenage boy inhabiting the body of an unrelated grown man, a guy who stole the name of another guy, and I haven't even gone into the Keyblade stuff yet. It's all just nonsense after a while. I've watched two different KH lore videos and I still don't understand most of it.

I'll give this to KH3, though, it does feel like someone has a vision for it. "I'm going to remake Pirates of the Caribbean 3 as 10% of a video game, as an open world exploration game" is a sentence that was said aloud and approved of. I don't know how that happened.

Salacious B. Crumb
A perfect Star Wars-y interpretation of the court jester character. His only role in the movie is to laugh hysterically. This is something Star Wars is really good at; memorable one-off characters.

Grand Admiral Thrawn
Pretty much makes the Hand of Thrawn books. What makes Thrawn compelling is that he's the only antagonist who attempts to fight the heroes using his mind instead of mystical powers, armies, or guards or whatever... even though he also has armies and allies with a Jedi, but whatever, the point is that he's much smarter than anyone else who came before. The idea of predicting your enemies based on their classical artwork is also hilarious. He also has the perfect death, where one of his convoluted plans finally goes awry. I'm aware that he shows up later after those books and gets resurrected or whatever, who cares, those don't count.

Expanded Universe Decanonization
A necessity. I don't actually blame Disney for doing this. Before the Disney Buyout, the Star Wars EU was widely mocked online for a million reasons, and deservedly so. The problem is that Disney only decanonized it because it wanted to replace it with a new EU of identical low quality. Yes, we lost the Hand of Thrawn trilogy and the KotOR games, but those were like 1% of the EU, and you know it.

The problem with EUs is twofold. The first is that some things are better left unexplained, and the second is that you just inherently get lower-quality writers than you do on movies. Like, for every terrible movie you've ever seen, there are a hundred even worse books.

Jizz Music
Like, George Lucas knew what this meant, right? He must have.

Yuuzhan Vong
Unlike most EU stuff, I'd already read about the Yuuzhan Vong before this topic. Here's what I like about them: they're an attempt at a big villain that is about neither magical mystical stuff (the Sith) nor stark physical equipment (the Empire). Instead, their shtick is that they use organic technology, which is kind of a tired trope, but I'll allow it because organic technology has never really been done that well in fiction. What you have instead is things like the Zerg, which are great, but not quite the same thing. The Yuuzhan Vong also have an actual culture, one that's much more fleshed out than you normally get in Star Wars, which I appreciate. Caste systems in alien cultures is a little played out, but it's fiiiiine. I wonder what Indian people think of their culture being used by white people in sci-fi as shorthand for scary aliens?

I guess I can sum this up as the Yuuzhan Vong being assembled from other sci-fi tropes, but done reasonably well, to the point where I can accept them as something cool in the universe.

Chewbacca's Bowcaster
I'm gonna level with you. I watched the OT a million times as a kid, and I had zero memory of Chewbacca's laser crossbow. It wasn't until I played the video games and these things showed up that I looked it up and found out that this had been here all along. This is something that just left zero impression on me at all.

I appreciate the idea that sasquatches wouldn't use normal guns, but instead they build laser crossbows? Get out of here. Chewbacca's weapon should have just been his fists, and maybe throwing objects he finds.

Cloud City
A thinly-sketched out location for half of ESB to take place on. I love ESB as much as anyone, but Cloud City itself is just a series of nice-looking corridors. "Floating city" might be the most overused sci-fi/fantasy trope. It's cool and fantastic like three times, and then you're done with it.

Star Wars Fandom
Honestly, I mostly avoid the SW fandom. I'm much more familiar with the Trek fandom, for obvious reasons, but the SW fandom has always struck me as... I don't know, slightly more annoying? I can't put this into words, sorry. What I will say in the SW fandom's defense is that no other fandom was ever, like, betrayed as much as they were? First by George Lucas making atrocious movies, and then by Disney throwing out the EU, which I assume the SW fandom loved, since it did have five-billion books.

Darth Maul
AKA the only memorable thing in all of PM, and he has two lines. I'm genuinely curious if Darth Maul is actually cool, or if he's merely the coolest thing in his movie, and no one would otherwise remember him. I do think he has a great design, though.

Maul really should have been the main villain of PM. Establish that he's working for someone high up in the Senate, but we don't know who (even though the audience knows it has to be Ian McDiarmid because he played Palpatine in the 80s), and he does all of the villainous stuff instead of Nute Gunray. There's nothing to this character as a person, though. He wants nonspecific revenge for nonspecific reasons, I guess?

The most comical moment in maybe all of Star Wars is when Daenerys Targaryen is talking to the mysterious mobster over the blue-and-white hologram phone. Suddenly it's revealed that it's Darth Maul, but because Disney was afraid that audiences wouldn't remember him, he then activates his lightsaber over the phone for literally no reason, and it's red even though the holograms in Star Wars are always blue.

Clone Wars (Film)
I was hoping this wouldn't be nominated. I saw this movie in theaters with my dad in 2008. Look, I'm not... I don't know, I don't get offended easily, I guess? But Ziro the Hutt is maybe the most offensive character in Star Wars. What possessed George Lucas to add a drag queen villain, I can't say. He's not quite as bad as Profit and Lace, the Deep Space 9 episode where Quark turns into a woman to sleep with a businessman in order to prove that girls are as smart as boys, but he's still really bad. This is also the movie where Obi-Wan betrays a parlay with his enemy, which seems wildly out of character to me. Honestly, I have no idea how this got a theatrical release.

Whenever someone is like "George Lucas' movies weren't that bad," he should be forced to rewatch this movie.

Keyblades
Keyblades are a bit contentious for me. I acknowledge that keys do look kind of like swords, and combining them was a clever idea, and equipping keychains that change the design of the blade is very cool. As a singular design, keyblades are great. And yeah, giving them the power to unlock things makes sense thematically. But being cool is all keyblades needed to be. They did not need a giant epic stupid backstory about Keyblade Knights or whatever they were called (I'm too lazy to even google it). But the strength of the concept and basic design is enough for me to give them a decent rank.

The Clone Wars movie is the worst Star Wars movie (not counting the Holiday Special). It's kinda amazing how boring and bad it is. The very worst, like, 3 or 4 Clone Wars TV episodes might be this bad, but other than those it's amazing how much better the show is.
