Traitor Trooper
This was the only meme to come out of TFA, and one of only two in the entire ST. I appreciate the idea that this random Stormtrooper would be personally angry at Finn's betrayal. Like, we don't know who he is, maybe Finn doesn't know who he is, but his actions mean that Finn's betrayal has implicitly pissed off the entire Empire. I like it so much that I'll even give JJ Abrams the benefit of the doubt and assume that the electrical baton thing he uses is some kind of civilian crowd control weapon, and that this guy, upon seeing a possible Jedi, just gives no ****s and jumps into a fight against a ninja-wizard with the equivalent of a taser. George Lucas In the epic battle between George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry, I don't know. Roddenberry has the advantage of dying at a good moment where he would stop embarrassing himself. Lucas is clearly the guy who rolled a bunch of natural 20s in a row while making ANH, then benefited from other peoples' competence on ESB. But like I said before, I suspect he actually is some kind of secret business genius. He knew how to exploit the toy market, he knew how to make a ton of money on video games and books, and he knew to sell Disney his property for 4.5 billion dollars. I can imagine Lucas not planning for Star Wars to completely consume his life. Before Star Wars, he was just a mildly rich director. He probably didn't plan for or want the silly space movie to become his entire life. But it's clear that he still cared. Let me be clear here: I think Lucas' competence is at best questionable, but it's clear that he always cared. It's clear that he was putting his all into the prequels. They're terrible, but they've got actual soul to them. There's more pathos in PM or AotC than there is in all of the sequels combined. Lucas pushed the boundaries of what was possible with CGI far beyond his means, so much so that his movies looked like video games and his characters suffered and were written horribly so that more horribly-rendered Jedi Temples and space battles could be inserted. You can't write dialogue for Anakin and Padme so awful if you understand human communication at all, but you also can't screw up that badly without trying. You wouldn't include that one second of Jar-Jar Binks in RotS unless you were upset that people hated your character and you just wanted to stick it to them by including him. George Lucas was an artist. A terrible, insane artist who should have been restrained by his employees -- but an artist with ambition and ideas. The real question is this: did Lucas know Disney would screw everything up? He must have known what he was dealing with. Disney is the definition of boardroom-approved film production. Opening Crawl There are four good uses of opening crawl narration in film history. One is Blade Runner, the other three are the OT Star Wars movies. It's amazing how a simple change like making the crawl go away from the audience instead of just up makes everything pop more. Canderous Ordo I like KotOR well enough, but more as a game than as a story. KotOR 1 is a very standard Star Wars-y story with one legendary twist, and the characters reflect that. But Canderous Ordo (and Jolee Bindo) is an exception. A mercenary of dubious morality, not Dark Side evil but definitely eviler than he is neutral. He's a fairly typical Proud Warrior Race Guy, but with the twist that he fought against you in the past and is impressed by you. It works well enough, even if he's not the more complex character. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Naboo
I get it. It's a paradisal planet the Trade Federation screws up. The heroes have to preserve it, that's the goal that makes them heroic. The architecture is vaguely Mediterranean because that's a nice place people like to visit. I'm fine with all of that. What I'm not fine with is a system of elective monarchy (???) that can elect fourteen year-olds as queen. Look, I'm a teacher. I've talked politics with fourteen year-olds. They shouldn't be allowed anywhere near power. As far as Star Wars planets go, this is a low tier one. How to Make Up Star Wars Names Inspector Krumbulus was her best name. "If you don't know me in person, I can't believe you watched this video." Yikes. Solo: A Star Wars Story This battles TFA for the title of "best Disney SW movie." It's not great, but it's also not terrible. I was expecting an atrocity when I went in, and instead it's merely competent. You heard so many rumors about it, like the acting coach coming in at the last minute and the guy named Therm Scissorpunch. Everyone knew that this movie would be about how all of the important events of Han Solo's life happened in the space of a week, and that does happen, but it's done about as well as it realistically could have been done. I appreciate the comparatively low stakes in this movie, where the stakes are basically just a lot of money, and the final villain is just a mafia boss. That guy, man. If I was in an office armed with a knife, and my enemy had a gun, and I wasn't a Jedi, I would be way less confident than him. He's like strolling around the office without a care in the world, like his stupid knife is better than Han Solo's gun. I already gave my thoughts on how the movie retroactively ruins Han Solo's arc in ANH, but I think the most interesting thing about the way the movie connects into the broader Star Wars story is the five seconds of Darth Maul. That was so clearly an attempt to set up an MCU-style shared universe, and it's very lame. Can I complain about Emilia Clarke for a while? Stop casting her in movies. She's a terrible actress. She's good as a waify princess who looks off into the distance meaningfully and doesn't talk a lot, but the minute she opens up her mouth, she sounds like a petulant little kid, and she's the size of a medium-sized dog. Whenever she needs to do anything action-y or badass, she's just so, so bad. I wouldn't say she ruined Terminator Genisys, but only because everyone ruined that movie. Yuuzhan Vong's Hated of Machines Not Being Properly Exploited in Battlefront There are a lot of times Star Wars squandered an obvious opportunity. Not much to say about that! IG-11 I wrote up a whole thing about IG-88 before I thought to check the Wiki to make sure. Whoops! IG-11 works really well as a vehicle for the Mandalorian to get over his racism against droids, and to allow the audience to feel something. The short guy was so we could feel something about a sympathetic character dying ignobly, but IG-11 gets the heroic sacrifice. This way, we get both varieties, which is good. ----------- Thunderous Applause Star Trek The Force Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Lightsabers Darth Vader Death Star Sheev Palpatine You're My Only Hope Yoda John Williams The Saga Begins (Song) Han Solo Millennium Falcon Grand Admiral Thrawn Luke Skywalker R2-D2 Opening Crawl Luke vs Vader Duel (Bespin) Mr. Plinkett Star Wars Reviews Hand of Thrawn Trilogy Mos Eisley Cantina TIE Fighter A New Hope Poster Baby Yoda It's a Trap Star Wars Ep 1: Jedi Party Duel of the Fates Order 66 The Force is Strong with This One Battle of Hoth Obi-Wan Kenobi Canderous Ordo Twi'leks Force Lightning IG-11 Grand Moff Tarkin j*** Music Jabba's Palace Sequence Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi C-3PO Star Wars Toys Headbonk Stormtrooper Spaceballs Rise of the Resistance Yuzzhan Vong Anagram Ranks Anything Star Wars-related Death Star II Assault Lego Star Wars Traitor Trooper Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Qui-Gon Jinn Jawas Shadows of the Empire (N64) Keyblades Jyn Erso Kyle Katarn Darth Maul Hand Amputations Salacious B. Special Edition Changes
Along with the ET walkie-talkie thing, the SW special edition changes are the most infamous in cinema. How much authority should you, as the creator of a work, have to go back and change things? There's no easy answer to that (unless you're JK Rowling, in which case you have the authority to tweet out that wizards normally poop on the floor and turn it invisible), but George Lucas avoided the question entirely by just charging ahead and doing it all anyway. Some of the changes are okay. Everyone is fine with cleaning up awkward visual effects, sure. But even this isn't done consistently -- there's a cut on the Death Star with a door opening that was never fixed. Completely inexplicable. To me, the Han/Greedo thing isn't even the worst one. I completely respect Harrison Ford just rolling his eyes and saying "who cares?" when asked about it. To me, the worst change is in RotJ, when Darth Vader looks at Palpatine shocking Luke. George Lucas must have said to himself "Man, the audience really needs a way to know what's going on in Vader's mind," then he inserted those hilarious "Noooooooooos." Lucas' actions can only be explained as those of a man who just lost his spark over time. IG-88 A complete nothing character who shows up for two seconds, but who's more memorable than some entire movies I've seen. A masterful design. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Series) I appreciate that they're willing to kill the clones on-screen, which is at least something in a show about a war, but the tone is normally too childish for my tastes. Sometimes you get a darker episode, which is alright, but then other times people spin lightsabers to fly like helicopters and I'm just like "nope" and disengage. Star Wars: Masters of Ters Ksi Having looked up a few reviews and videos of this, it looks terrible. I appreciate that it has Mara Jade, though. Nothing else to be said on this game's behalf, sadly. A Star Wars fighting game seems like a natural progression for the franchise. Like, just make a game with Anakin, Vader, Palpatine, Yoda, Greivous, Maul, Young Obi-Wan, Old Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, Qui-Gon, Luke, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, and Boba Fett, and you're done. It cannot possibly be that hard to make work. Alas, there never was a definitive Star Wars fighting game, to the point where I associate Star Wars and fighting games with Soul Calibur... IV? V? I no longer even remember which game it was. Matt the Radar Technician Not a big fan of SNL, I'm gonna level with you. I watched the skit on youtube; it's fine. It's kind of a funny concept, but I'm not that into it. Vader's Redemption: The Imperial March I don't know anything about how music works, so this was very fun. An uplifting version of the Imperial March is a great idea, so much so that I'm now listening to the channel's other music. Sadly, it's impossible to completely change the atmosphere of the theme by changing only the key or whatever, because it's still slightly sinister at some points. I do like the main usage of trumpets to sound cheerful, though. Blue Harvest (Family Guy) I've never seen it! This came out just after I'd given up on Family Guy, so I never bothered. As a result, I can't rank it. Is it actually good? Kreia See, Kreia (and more broadly, KotOR 2) makes me more sympathetic to Rian Johnson. The idea of subverting the standard Star Wars tropes can be done well, and I know this because it was done well... but not by Johnson. There's a meme about Kreia hating you no matter what your actions are, but that's not quite accurate. Kreia's shtick was about teaching you how your actions always have unexpected consequences, no matter how good your intentions may be. That's a more meaningful message than basically anything in an actual Star Wars movie. Sure, I could have lived without Kreia killing all of the Jedi except you (if you count KotOR as canon, which may still be the case, we've been down to "the last Jedi" at least three times), but the point is that she has something to actually say, and her speech about how "there is only you" is still a better twist than KotOR 1's actual twist. Hell, even Kreia's physical design works this way. "My eyes work fine, I just let them atrophy from disuse." D'ya get it, kids? D'ya get it? She only sees with the Force because the physical world doesn't matter except in how it interacts with the Force. This tiny amount of character design building does a ton to flesh out Kreia. Am I saying that the movies would be better if they adopted elements from KotOR? Maybe, I don't know. Kreia is certainly more interesting than any of the ST villains, though. On a purely aesthetic note, her boss fight with her controlling lightsabers in the air with the Force is also super cool. You compare that to the first game, where the guy just swings a lightsaber at you, and it's like night and day. Youngling Slaughter In theory, Anakin murdering children should be like the defining moment for his character. And for a second, it sort of is. The kid asking Anakin what to do, Anakin igniting his lightsaber, and the kid flinching as he realizes something is wrong, all of that is good. The kid's acting is terrible, which takes away from the scene, but it's not completely ruined yet. Later in the movie, though, Obi-Wan uses the phrase "killed younglings" several times, and the power of the scene is ruined. It's just so, so stupid. I realize we're in another galaxy, but "youngling" is... Imagine if you were watching a drama about a woman whose husband is killed in a car accident, and she's emotionally telling her friend about it while crying, and she says "He died in a vroom-vroom boom." It would not only be impossible to take seriously, it would retroactively ruin the elements of what came before that did work. Nom Anor Got a nice little Day of the Dead mask going on, I approve of that. I'm aware of this character a little as the spy who constantly changes sides and is hated by everyone, but I didn't know of his death. I don't know, I feel like there's no reason to commit suicide just because "the galaxy has no place for me" or whatever. Haven't you parlayed your way into every faction ten times over by this point? Selected Passage from Heir to the Jedi A very silly passage. I get what it's going for, but lamenting Obi-Wan's death a little more directly would probably have been less silly. Also, using the word "stark" while being so verbose was maybe not a good move. Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit I'd never heard of this before. I mean, it looks... serviceable? I'm not a big board game fan, so I can't really interpret how well-made the game is as a game. As a concept, game-ifying the Battle of Naboo is very odd. Even at the time, no one really liked PM, right? Surely it would make more sense to game-ify one of the many space battles. I could see a Death Star vs Rebels board game being more compelling. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

I appreciate the need to give the Yuuzhan Vong a signature weapon, but I have a really hard time accepting that these snake things can just no sell lightsabers and shoot venom "20 meters." Like, sure, they can spit venom sixty feet. Okay? Against any kind of serious army, that's a joke. George Lucas Poetry Line I want to feel bad for Lucas, that all of his lines were taken out of context by RLM and turned into hurtful memes... but they're just so damn funny. The poetry line in particular is a thesis for everything Lucas is as a person: he tries, and he has ideas, but he clearly just does not know what he's doing or how to express his thoughts in a coherent manner. Star Wars Rebels Besides the Ahsoka episode, I have seen none of Rebels. As soon as I saw that the main character had a lightsaber slingshot, I knew this wasn't for me. No offense, I mean no offense, but it just isn't my style. I like shlock, I can prove this by how many times I've watched Kirk fight the Gorn, but this show seems a little too childish for my tastes, so I can't really comment on it at all. General Grievous General Grievous, okay. Let's just ignore his name here. Interesting concept, I guess? It makes sense that the Separatists would have a military leader. But we get zero information on who this guy is. Why does he collect lightsabers? What is he fighting for? Why does he follow Palpatine? All we know about him is that he likes to fight Jedi and he's not very smart, even though he's a general. I feel like this character only exists because Dooku dies in the first five minutes, and Lucas didn't think at all about what personality or motive to give him. Grievous should have been set up in a previous movie. I can imagine it being cool for Obi-Wan to kill him if they'd had an established rivalry. Like, okay, the idea of a guy who fights using lightsabers by using technology instead of the Force has some merit, but Grievous is basically just a blunt idiot who's not an equal challenge for our heroes at all, so his death emotionally means nothing to us. It's merely the last thing Obi-Wan does of note before everything goes to hell. Star Wars Epic Duels Having looked this up now, I see that you choose a character who has a friend with him, like Luke gets Leia, etc. Several characters get generic clone troopers or battle droids? Like, what? Who is going to choose Count Dooku and his Super Battle Droid assistant when you can choose Han and Chewbacca or whatever? Very odd. Guide to the Races of Star Wars No joke about Twi'leks? Very odd. I enjoyed the Germans and Coneheads jokes, but this is definitely weaker than his Star Trek video. Darths & Droids The only Star Wars-related webcomic I've read, or know of, Darths & Droids takes the idea of DM of the Rings and... that's it. It's just DM of the Rings, but with Star Wars. I enjoy the attempt at giving Star Wars as different a plot as possible while using still images from the movies, that's a funny idea. Darths & Droids is also famous for largely redeeming Jar-Jar, who's downright great in it. It's so good, that I follow the comic and read every new one to come out. It'll be impressive to see if they can make Luke's death in TLJ be less awful. Chad Vader I've heard of this, but it's way too much for me to watch, sorry. I'll have to not rank this one. Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul Duel I'm of two minds on this one. Like RLM said, there's no emotional weight to this duel at all. It is purely a duel between swordsmen. But it's also the only visually interesting thing in the entire movie. Why is there a power generator in the Naboo palace? Who cares! It's a weird Star Wars-y place for a fight scene. I don't know, honestly. Darth Maul revealing his double lightsaber is a legendary moment, but Duel of the Fates is really doing most of the work to make this duel work, and it's not quite able to pull it off. This is probably the best part of PM, but I wouldn't say it's good, exactly. Chelli Aphra I just spent like twenty minutes reading her Wiki article. Um... I don't really know what to say? She seems like a fairly standard adventurer archetype who falls in with Darth Vader. Sorry, I've got no insights here. Yoda vs Palpatine Duel Okay, I get it. Obi-Wan vs Anakin is the technical duel, where you have master swordsmen doing flips and stuff. They have the emotional core of two friends fighting. Yoda vs Palpatine is the Force duel, where you have guys who are wiser (at least in terms of knowledge of the Force) so that they're more One with the Force dueling using more overt magic powers, and they're the masters of the two other guys who are fighting (even though Yoda isn't really Obi-Wan's master, ESB be damned). Also, the duel takes place in Palpatine's office and in the senate chambers, the two places Palpatine has spent decades trying to corrupt. Conceptually, all of this makes sense and should work. Does it actually work? Kind of! It is visually interesting to see Yoda flip around Palpatine in a circle while he stands in a floating senate pod thing. It's cool to see Palpatine chuck Senate chairs at Yoda and Yoda use the Force to stop them. It's all very spectacular. But again, there is zero emotion to this fight. The audience knows that neither character can die, and the characters themselves don't really know each other beyond their professional duties? This is a hard duel to rank. I would probably call it the second best in PT, after Anakin vs Obi-Wan, though. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Star Tours
Compared to Rise of the Resistance, this is almost charmingly quaint. You've got one indoor line where you walk past a bunch of robots under blue-tinted lights, and eventually you sit down in a room with a Threepio animatronic sitting next to a TV screen. The screen shows Vader and Empire guys doing bad stuff, and the room (which is supposed to be a vehicle) shakes around as you escape. I wonder what made them choose Threepio as the animatronic? Is that he's the most cowardly of the main characters, so he could react with the appropriate amount of fear when Darth Vader appears? As a kid, I really enjoyed Star Tours. I know I went on it at least four or five times, but I don't remember all of the details. I doubt I'd have the patience for an hour-long line for five minutes of entertainment, but I guess that's what you did in the 90s. The Mandalorian After TRoS, I thought I was done with Star Wars. But then everyone was like "No, bro, you have to give this one more shot." I refused for months, until it finally I had no more excuses. The Mandalorian was the shot of adrenaline the franchise needed. No gigantic epic plots (though Baby Yoda seems like he'll tie into one), just a serialized show about a badass and a baby wandering the galaxy, to the point where this feels like a show from the 1990s with modern production values. Everything about this show is done right. I could point to specific episodes, but instead I'll just talk about the climax of the last episode. The heroes are on the ground while an Imperial guy flies around in a TIE fighter and shoots at them. The Mandalorian comes up with a half-baked plan to fly up with a jetpack, hook around the TIE fighter's wings with his restraining cord thingy, and then has an extremely awkward time attaching a bomb to the surface of the fighter because he's going like three-hundred miles per hour. No highly choreographed Jedi fights, just a guy barely scraping by. It's nice that Disney finally managed to get something right, but now that the Mandalorian has gone from a side project to the only active Star Wars project, I wonder if they won't increase the stakes to be more epic. We'll see. BB-8 Great design, I'll give it that. This is just another case of no one thinking through how the ideas JJ Abrams introduces in TFA will be used in later movies, so nothing is done with BB-8. I cannot remember a single thing BB-8 does after TFA. I just looked it up, BB-8 went to Canto Bight and was with Rey at the end of TRoS? I have literally zero memories of that. As a storytelling tool, BB-8 serves literally the exact same purpose as Artoo. There is no functional difference between these characters in the way the script uses them. I realize Artoo is supposed to be a little more heroic, but it matters so little. And because the audience already cares about Artoo and Threepio, after TFA, all of the important robot moments go to them, so... Yeah. Waste of a character, but every Star Wars thing is contractually obligated to add at least one new cute robot. Padme Amidala You know what's weird? The most proactive, heroic female character in the entire series isn't Leia or Rey, it's Padme. Padme is the only one who really goes out and tries to get the things she wants (which eventually includes someone she knew as a nine year-old boy) without being part of a larger organization that makes these broad decisions that she's merely part of. PM and AotC are awful, of course, but Padme is actually not a terrible depiction of a female hero, even if she's the most useless main character in a fight (I guess Threepio is, but whatever). The problem for Padme is that the prequel people remember is RotS, which is the one where she's pregnant for 95% of the movie and does nothing except fuss over her upcoming babies, which is absolutely not the thing you want in a space adventure movie. Add to that the fact that Natalie Portman is inexplicably the best actor in that movie (which is shocking, given what she does in those Thor movies), and she has no big memes. Anyway, I guess I should address "she has lost the will to live." Yes, okay, robot. Padme just gave birth to two children she spent months gushing over, but she lost the will to live because Anakin is a meanie. I don't even know what to say about that. Leia/Luke Kiss Lucas occasionally claims that he intended for Luke and Leia to be siblings from the start. This is obviously a lie for many reasons, but the most obvious reason is that he would not have included incest on purpose. What is this, Fire Emblem? Did the EU ever address this? Did we learn that Luke and Leia felt each other's similarity through the Force or whatever? Sith I like the Sith as a concept. They're Force users who use their powers for self-gain. Fine as an idea, I suppose. My problem with them is the stupid Rule of Two thing. It's the absolute dumbest method of training, which is probably why every video game just has billions of Sith for you to fight. Speaking of video games, I played The Old Republic when it went F2P, and played a Sith Inquisitor. I enjoyed torturing people with lightning for no reason. That game's not great, but it does give you some fun evil options. X-Wings I can recite practically the entire lead-up to the Death Star battle, where all of the pilots are talking in their X-Wings. It's such a good, simple design for space fighter jets. "Fighter jets, but with Xs for wings." Sometimes, something simple that is better than anything more complicated or realistic. Darth Nihilus' Voice Very good "mysterious lost soul given over completely to evil and madness" voice. I played KotOR 2, but I actually don't even remember how he dies. I do remember his mask and voice, though. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!
