The Empire at the time Jag takes over is a mix of hardliners and more progressive types, and they'd been allied with the Republic for years, ever since the Vong. It definitely makes more sense written out over the years. His leadership and marriage to Jaina eventually leads to a Fel Empire that has an order of Imperial Knights some 90 or so years later in the Legacy comics.

Jag is also Wedge's nephew and the son of the Empire's former Wedge equivalent.

This response by Han Solo to an Imperial commander who says she thinks the old Empire would have handled the Vong better

"What the Empire would have done was build a super-colossal Yuuzhan Vongkilling battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits, employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors, and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened? It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors, or some other mistake, and a hotshot enemy pilot would drop a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. Now that's what the Empire would have done."

I didn't realize the canon extends that far, I thought it only went to Luke's middle-age, not past his lifespan.

The books only went to about 45 years after the battle of Yavin, so Luke would be around 65 or so.

The comic series Legacy takes place around 135 years after Yavin, and they set it out that far so it didn't conflict with anything that was going on in the books.

So there's a pretty huge gap by design where we don't 100% know what happened, only what we hear about in Legacy.

Rey's Theme
This is the only new theme I remember. It is a good theme, but the first thirty seconds sound wintery, even though Rey is from a desert. Still, the rest of the theme evokes an adequate amount of mystery and epicness, so I'll allow it. In fact, I'm even going to go so far as to say it's better than Luke's and Leia's themes.

Porkins
I need to know, when they put out a casting call for minor characters to use in the Death Star sequence, did they already know the names of the pilots, or did they name them afterwards? Because if it's the latter, imagine being the guy who's so fat they name a character after your obesity. How angry are you about that? Then again, at least it makes him memorable. I can't remember a single pilot's name from the Death Star sequence besides Biggs and Wedge, and Biggs is only because of Final Fantasy.

Han Frozen in Carbonite
Such a good idea. It's easy to imagine a movie where Han is simply carted away in handcuffs or something. Instead, they went that extra mile to think of a cool space way to transport a prisoner. By making it experimental, like this improvised thing, an element of danger is also added, even though it doesn't really make much sense that Boba Fett can't just use handcuffs (has he never transported a prisoner before?), and it foreshadows what might happen to Luke. Best of all, Han makes a funny face as he's frozen. I can understand why Jabba likes it as a decoration so much.

Ewoks
Everyone hates ewoks. As a weird allegory for the Vietnam War, where technologically inferior jungle guys fight the more powerful, more advanced empire, they're not very good? Like, sure, I get what Lucas is going for here, but the difference in technology is so much greater than the US-Vietnam one that the ewoks experiencing any level of success makes the Empire just look like a joke.

As far as the ewoks go outside of the Battle of Endor, **** 'em. Little annoying cannibals. That's right, folks, I am going to be controversial and take a hard stance against cannibalism.

K-2SO
One of the better characters in RO. His death heralds the kill 'em all ending of the movie, which shocked me in theaters. I feel like his sarcastic personality exists solely to differentiate him from Threepio, though.

Star Wars Kid
A legend. I remember watching this many times when I was younger. The kid eventually sued the friend who released the tape, and was the target of bullying for his entire school career. In fairness to his bullies, though, it was really funny.

Strategic Defense Initiative
I appreciate Reagan wanting an alternative to MAD, but all of his scientists were like "lol dude this is decades away from being viable," and he tried anyway, so... not my favorite use of budget?

Han's Anti-Empire Response
Way too verbose. Han Solo would never say something this long and descriptive, he would just say "go to hell," and that would be the end of it. The author clearly conflates wit with verbosity. Dammit, man, did you not listen to Polonius?

Lego Star Wars Holiday Special
Another Life Day holiday special, huh? Fine, whatever. The most interesting thing about this is that I found a screen shot of all of the characters in it, saw Finn, Rey, Poe, and Chewbacca, and one other girl. I thought "oh no, it's an OC for the film?" Then I realized it was just Rose. First off, Rose is important enough to be counted as a main character? Second, Lego Asian people look the same as white people?

Wampa
It's just a sasquatch. Yeti? Bigfoot? Is there a difference between those things?

Bigger Luke Theory
I really like silly filmmaking errors like this and the Force Kick. Good work.

Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren is the only character in the ST who was not completely ruined. That's not to say he's a flawless or even good execution of his concept, but he's the only character whose obvious arc is completed, even if awkwardly. Everyone knew the second he showed up that he was going to eventually turn to the Light Side (still hate that term), and that the only question was how. The other characters were flailing for something to do and some way to progress their personalities and motivations (Finn particularly suffers), but because Kylo and Rey are the only ones tied into the mystical magical elements of the Force (which is what TRoS became about), and because Rey's entire character was thrown into disarray by the "you're a nobody lol you're a Palpatine" revelation, Kylo is the only character in the series who kind of works.

Notice how I've barely even talked about Kylo as a person? The backscene stuff is more interesting than the character, dammit.

Cade Skywalker
I like the idea of Luke's distant descendant being kind of nobody jerk who turns his back on the galaxy, etc, but gets drawn back in. This character looks like a general win except that I have curly hair. I let my hair grow out during covid, and let me tell you, it looks like the general shape of Cade's hair, but much, much worse. I have difficulty believing Cade can keep his hair looking that good, sorry.

Han Stuffing Luke into the Tauntaun
A great move. As a storytelling device, it saves Luke, teaches you that Han is resourceful and doesn't mind doing gross things (which comes up again in the asteroid cave), and establishes that this universe has gross elements (you would never see something like this in Star Trek).

Additional Stormtroopers in the SE
One of the few positive SE changes that isn't just cleaning up a wonky effect. Not much else to say about it, though.

A'Sharad Hett
Another Sith in the far Cade Skywalker future. You know, there comes a point where I want some kind of mystical opponent for the Jedi who's not just another Sith. Call me crazy. Cade Skywalker's page quote is Luke's ghost telling him that every generation has its own problems, but apparently those problems are always more Sith. Also, his apprentice is named Darth Wyyrlok? Shut up.

Qi'ra
I already talked about my Emilia Clarke opinions in the Solo write-up, so I'll just talk about her as a character here. You know in one second that she's evil and will eventually betray Han. Also, the idea that they randomly bump into each other on another planet is silly, they don't even have the Force to justify it.

As a character, I don't know. Han's ex-girlfriend turned dark but not completely evil is an okay concept. I don't hate her, but I don't really love her, either.

Luke/Kylo Lightsaber Duel
I have mixed feelings about this one. It is a clever subversion of expectations, but the fact is that we never got to see old Luke at his best. We never saw a fully experienced, fully realized Luke actually do anything physical in the entire series. I also, I don't know, how did Luke know to show up at this exact moment? Was it just that the Force told him to? I almost don't know if it's just bad writing or if Rian Johnson was doing another thing commentating on Star Wars writing.

I do appreciate the foreshadowing that Luke's movements don't disturb the salt, though.

General Veers
General Veers is unremarkable on his own, but he is part of ESB's silliest scene. He's the guy in the AT-AT walker who Vader calls on the hologram, and Vader's hologram is like six inches tall, like it's some kind of action figure. There's a reason why Palpatine and Snoke's holograms are filmed from low angles, and why both of them are always filmed head-on: Tiny things come across to the audience as inherently comical. That moment, when Vader is a tiny hologram, is so silly-looking. It's extra confusing, because we've established the video screens exist in this universe. Vader could just use one to contact Veers and it would look fine.

Duck Vader
I remember nothing about Tiny Toons except the opening lyrics "We're tiny, we're toony, we're all a little loony." That said, imagine being George Lucas. You slap together a robot-y-looking samurai costume for your villain, and it becomes so iconic that it becomes shorthand for villains everywhere, to the point where it shows up in Tiny Toons. Pretty impressive.

Star Wars Sound Effects
I'm gonna say it: Star Wars has the best sound effects of any Star series. Star Trek is good and all, but nothing touches the lightsaber vwooshes, and probably nothing ever will. Blaster sound effects are also top-notch, as are the general spaceship movements. And if Darth Vader's breathing counts, then that by itself wins everything. Don't get me wrong, I love transporters, phasers, and warp drive hums as much as anyone, but I'm going with Star Wars here.

Cara Dune
We know what Luke can do, we know what Han can do, but the Mandalorian is just better than Cara at everything except maybe sniping, so she comes off as kind of just another pair of hands in practice -- which is fine, not everyone is a legendary warrior. She's a perfectly acceptable tough guy character. As an ex-soldier who's just looking for the quiet life, it's a little odd how she basically makes no attempt to be a normal person even once she joins that farming community, but it's fiiiiine.

Dune
Star Wars and Star Trek are the defining sci-fi works. Each of them ripped off another idea from about twelve years before -- Dune for Star Wars, Forbidden Planet for Star Trek. It's funny, too. Dune and Foundation are basically the building blocks for what Star Wars and Star Trek did, but the influences from Dune are way more obvious. Imagine if Lucas had instead mined Foundation for material, with its complete disregard for exciting action and preference for scientists and politicians who solve their problems with extremely verbose logical reasoning.

I've only read the first two Dune books, but I know what happens afterward. I can confirm that the first two books are really good examinations of what happens when people take hero-savior figures too far and stop thinking for themselves. In any case, Dune is way smarter than Star Wars, and Foundation is smarter still.

Speaking of which, the upcoming Foundation TV show looks terrible. Dune is sort of inherently unfilmable, but Foundation is even more unfilmable. Guaranteed one-to-two season run.

Wilhelm Scream
Sorry, but no. Whenever I hear a Wilhelm scream in a movie, it just takes me out of things.

Cad Bane
As I said before, I think Star Wars benefits from a very clear distinction between the magical mystical elements and the normal physical world stuff. Having a bounty hunter who specializes in fighting Jedi, who packs special anti-Jedi equipment, takes away from that. I'm not a fan of the general Wild West aesthetic, either. It makes sense in the context of living in a giant open plain or whatever, but in space? Having a long trench coat and wide-brimmed hat would just get caught on stuff all the time. And before you say that Jedi have robes, again, they're like magical mystical guys, so it's fine for them and only them.

AT-ATs
I could have sworn I already did these? They're great! They're basically just space tanks. The Empire needs a way to fight on the ground, so it makes complete logical sense that they would have some kind of mobile heavy artillery. Instead of just making a hovertank or something (which is what Warhammer 40K does with the Eldar), we have giant walking animal-shaped things? Cool.

Single Biome Planets
Yeah, yeah, okay. It doesn't make sense, but **** it, everyone loves these, and the cultures of planets don't matter in Star Wars as much as the vistas, so I'll give them a pass. That said, some vistas are inherently more exotic and cool than others. Deserts? Cool. Tundras? Cool. Redwood forests? Not exotic enough. Although I live in California, so my opinion may be biased.

Harrison Ford Insulting Lucas' Writing
As a kid, I knew that Harrison Ford and Sir Alec Guinness hated Star Wars. I didn't understand how they could hate something so amazing! As an adult, I completely understand and respect their perspectives here. Star Wars' success to me comes off as almost a complete fluke, and I think Harrison Ford knew that from the start. Let's be real, here, RotS' dialogue isn't that much worse than ANH's, Lucas just had better actors and way more luck to compensate for his bad writing.

Order 66 Survivors
I guess this goes without saying, but why not? Having anyone besides Yoda and Obi-Wan surviving the Purge devalues the idea of Luke being the last Jedi and all hope resting on his shoulders. It also raises the question of why they apparently were doing nothing the entire twenty years where the Empire ruined the galaxy.

Lensman Series
Sorry, I've never read the Lensman series, and it's too complicated and long for me to easily rank even by reading a synopsis of it. I won't rank this one, but I will note that I've heard it's the first space opera of all time, which is an interesting bit of history.

Eric Butts Reaction
I'm usually pretty good at telling if something is ironic or not, but this guy is beyond my powers of deduction. I can obviously tell that he's playing up his reactions for the camera, but if he feels genuine excitement, I don't know. I do know that he says "Oh, it's gorgeous" about a random patch of desert, so I suspect this is bull. If it is genuine at all, though, well, I know people should be able to feel any emotions they want without feeling bad about it as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, but eh, maybe sometimes you should feel ashamed.

Also, this guy is exceptionally ugly.

Max Landis
I know nothing about Max Landis as a human being, though I think he's one of the earlier instances of the #metoo movement?

As a director, all I've seen from him are Chronicle and Bright. Chronicle is fine. People seemed to like it way more than I did. I don't really like found footage as a gimmick, and I don't like realistic examinations of superheroes (though I dislike the superhero genre in general), so it's not really my thing. Bright, though, is just complete garbage. I don't want to go into it because it's not really Star Wars-related, but Bright is one of the worst things I've ever seen.

The High Ground
George Lucas must have thought he was being so clever when he wrote this line, like the idea of combining the literal high ground and the moral high ground made him the smartest filmmaker of all time. This line and the subsequent defeat of Anakin are so dumb that my friends and I quoted it to each other for our entire senior year of high school whenever any of us were even slightly elevated over the others. I can't give it a bad rating, though, because this line has genuinely brought me more joy than any other line in Star Wars. I can't emphasize enough how many times like I would step up one stair, turn to my friend behind me, hold out my arms, and say "It's over, James, I have the high ground," and then James would screw up his face and scream "YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER."

Star Wars Halloween Costumes
I mean, sure? Who really cares? It's not like trick-or-treating will be a thing in 2020, or maybe ever again.

Cloning in Star Wars
The implications of cloning are not explored at all in the movies. No one gives a thought to sending billions of clones to go fight robots, to the point where even the kid's cartoon casually shows clones dying, like they're not real people. It's very bizarre how even the Jedi are completely okay with the morality of this. Furthermore, no one really explores the more interesting idea of cloning Jedi. Like, if you clone one, does the clone still have Force powers? If so, why not clone Jedi to increase their numbers? If not, then why do Force powers seem genetic? I realize that in the context of the simple stories the movies have, this would be needlessly complicated, but the mystical nature of the Star Wars universe raises questions that you don't get in, say, Star Trek. For a series where clones play a central role in two movies out of six, nothing is done with them whatsoever.

Man, can you imagine someone trying to resolve Anakin's worrying about Padme's impending death by just cloning her? You could have a Padme clone show up, Darth Vader get angry and just stab her, it'd be great.

Soul Calibur IV
In the grand tradition of Soul Calibur guest characters, SCIV definitely has the weakest lineup, and that includes SCIII, the one with no guest characters at all. SCII has Link, Heihachi, and Spawn, SC Legends has Lloyd Irving, SC:BD has Kratos, SCV has Ezio, and SCVI has Geralt, 2B, and Haohmaru. What does SCIV have? Darth Vader, Yoda, and the Apprentice.

I said before that Star Wars seems like a natural fit for a fighting game, so what went wrong here? Well, I think it's partly just that the Star Wars aesthetic clashes so heavily with SC's Renaissance aesthetic. Star Wars has fantasy elements, but compared to SC, it's still firmly in the realm of science-fiction, so throwing robot-y Darth Vader and laser sword sounds into the fray just does not work. And yet, to be fair, Spawn and 2B also have clashing aesthetics and tones, yet they fit into the general SC aesthetic much more easily, so I don't know why Star Wars is such an outlier. I still think Star Wars is too sci-fi to be a good guest series, though. Next time, get Lord of the Rings. You can even replace Yoda with Gollum to have another short guy.

All of this is ignoring how the Apprentice was an advertisement for an unrelated upcoming Star Wars game that has been long forgotten by now. Instead of a character people care about, like Obi-Wan or Luke, we got this boring bald jackass. What a missed opportunity. And don't forget how the original release gave you Vader or Yoda depending on the console, which is just obnoxious. At least when SCII did it, it had the decency to use characters actually associated with those consoles (except Spawn, but I guess he's still a better Xbox choices than Blinx the Time Cat or whatever).

Also, I'm just going to say it: Soul Calibur was never that good. SCII came out at a time when 3D fighting games weren't reliably good, and just being competent made it stand out. Having Link in it was the cherry on top. Yeah, the series has gotten worse since then, but it's not like there's a huge gameplay difference between SCII and SCV (the bad one). So SCIV being a disappointment is just par for the course.
