I laughed when he appeared in Rogue One, like this was the MCU or something. I can imagine an alternate RotS where Bail Organa is more of an actual character, but it's not the one we got. Star Wars ships vs Star Trek ships I did this a bit already, but sure. I looked up the sizes of the Millennium Falcon and the various Star Trek ships, and the Trek ships dwarf it by like 10-20 times, which is predictable. The Millennium Falcon is a private ship, more comparable to that ship Quark owned for one episode, while the Star Trek ships are operated by the military. Star Destroyers are vastly larger, of course. I remember many years ago, when I was like nineteen, I found a website that compared Star Wars ships to Star Trek ships. It used citations from the EU to prove that the Wars ships are vastly more powerful. The problem with that is, I'm afraid, that it relies on Legends continuity. In the modern continuity? It's definitely true that Wars technology is much faster, since they can travel the galaxy in days whereas the Federation's vastest ship needs 70 years to travel that distance (though you can argue that the Milky Way might be larger). Assuming that Wars shields function the same as Trek shields, you can't transport photon torpedoes onto the bridge or anything. But then, Picard laughs when someone shoots lasers at him, and Wars ships very explicitly used lasers and "turbolasers," so who knows? It seems like Trek is superior in every way about technology except FTL travel speed, but Wars has such an advantage there that a hypothetical war still favors the Empire over the Federation. As for why Star Trek doesn't use fighter craft, well, I would have said that they just aren't useful in Trek's combat -- that the technology favors large phaser banks that can't be installed on small fighters. But thanks to DIS, we now know that all of the Federation ships actually are equipped with billions of robot fighter drones (or manned fighters, it's hard to tell), and it was just never mentioned until Alex Kurtzman told us, so I guess that's that. Christopher Lee What is it like to be a real actor who ends up doing shlock? That's what I was thinking when Charles Dance showed up in that horrible Dracula Untold movie. "Is he thinking about when he was in real movies?", I wondered. Why the hell did Christopher Lee accept the role of Dooku? I have no idea. Lee is great in everything he's in except Star Wars. He's even good in the Hobbit movies! Although, honestly, he still comes off with a bit more dignity than the rest of the RotS cast. On an unrelated note, I read that when he gets shot in LotR, he argued with Peter Jackson, saying that people who are shot don't react the way Jackson wanted him to act, and that he knew this because he'd fought in WWII. Jackson challenged him to show how Saruman would actually react to being shot, and Lee did like a face of surprise and slumped to the ground, and then Jackson forced him to do it the original way. Quality actor, 10/10 guy. Wilco (Album) I listened to the album while playing video games. I don't know anything about music, but I know I hate this. This is just not my style, sorry. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic The original KotOR, damn. Been forever. I remember talking about this game in high school with my friend Adin, who was not a video game guy, but nevertheless had played KotOR. KotOR is an adaptation of the Star Wars d20 ruleset, which I think is itself an adaptation of the D&D 3.5 ruleset? So we're talking about a copy of a copy of a copy, and it... works really well, actually. Gameplay-wise, this game is flawed but still really fun. Plot-wise, it's fairly standard fare except for one detail. There's a Darth Vader wannabe, a Jedi who falls to the Dark Side, a cast of companions who are either Star Wars archetypes or Bioware archetypes, and an epic plot involving an ancient artifact and fallen empire. It's all very much what you would expect... except for the one plot twist that launches the game from "pretty good" to "holy crap." I am talking, of course, about Revan. All throughout the game, you hear about Darth Revan, this legendary Sith asskicker, and how he'd totally kick all of your asses if he was here right now. And then, halfway through the game, it's revealed that you're Darth Revan, and the Jedi wiped your memories so you'd help them, and that's why you're so good at kicking ass despite ostensibly being a newbie Jedi. The game doesn't do a great job of exploring the identity issues or morality questions that this raises, but the twist by itself is like a top three video game twist of all time. Great game, but I don't know if I'd call it a must-play. Nien Nunb AKA the pancake guy. Quick aside, the alien language this guy speaks is a real African language that they just used. Nien Nunb works in two capacities. The first is to show how the Rebels have a bunch of alien species joined together against the Empire. The second is to give Lando someone to talk to, and it's telling how little Nien Nunb himself matters as a character that what he says in response doesn't matter at all. RIP Nien Nunb, you're yet another OT character the Disney sequels pointlessly kill. MauLer Look, sorry, I'll watch a five minute video for this topic, but I'm not going to watch four hours of analysis videos for it. I can't rate a guy I've never watched before. Space The final frontier. Space is Star Wars barely even matters. In Star Trek, the physics and logic of space matter a whole lot. In Star Wars, not so much. The only time the physics of space matter is when General Grievous punches a hole in the window and flies out. Every other time, the heroes might as well be flying in an atmosphere. This reaches its zenith in TRoS, where people ride horses on top of a Star Destroyer. I wonder if JJ Abrams thought that would be cool? He must have known it was dumb, right? TIE ap-1 I mean, this is a neat little design, but it's only in two games, neither of which I've played. As a design unto itself, it's... fine? It looks Empire-ish, at least. r/equalmemes Marginally better than the other ones, but not by any meaningful amount. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. He does a great job of illustrating how stupid Grievous' name is, and as a one-second joke, is clever and memorable. Also, he looks a little like Skeletor, so he automatically wins points. LinkMarioSamus I avoid all B8 drama, so I won't comment on users besides myself. Captain Phasma One of the strengths of the Stormtrooper design is how they're all interchangeable. The only differences are that like sergeants get little colored epaulets. Having a unique Stormtrooper is a bad idea, but it was executed about as well as it could have been. As a storytelling device, I'm gonna say that Captain Phasma is the most... pointless major character in Star Wars? She was advertised like she would be a key component to the trilogy. Really, she's another victim of Rian Johnson just doing whatever. She clearly should have culminated as Finn's final boss, where he defeats her without Rose's help, and then she dies. Poor whatever-that-actress'-name-is, she's great on Game of Thrones. Cassian Andor Like I said before, the idea of a dark side to the Rebellion is interesting. Cassian's a guy who lost everything fighting for what he believes in, but is still not completely gone, and can't quite bring himself to murder Jyn's father. I thought the little romance he had with Jyn was fine. Overall, this character is fine. Dathomir I haven't watched the episodes where this planet shows up, but it's the Rancor planet? Okay. He just didn't seem to understand at all that his ideas were just beyond his ability to make happen. Oh, how did this Xenogears line get into my CGI write-up? Hmmm. I respect that Lucas really wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible with CGI, but there are vast swathes of the prequels that just plain look like video games. There are parts that one step above an episode of Babylon 5! The Jedi Temple scenes are the worst of them, where it's very clear that it's all fake. He should have just accepted this and done more practical stuff. In a non-Lucas context, CGI would go on to be used to resurrect Grand Moff Tarkin and make young Leia look like a video game character for one second, both of which were terrible ideas. Jar-Jar Getting Laid No one likes Jar-Jar, even ironically. Director Krennic I really like the idea of RO having a villain who's, like, just not up to the challenge. This minor functionary who's completely out of his depth and acts like an idiot. I don't know if I love the execution, but the idea of this character buoys it up for me. Favorite Star Wars Species I was wondering if I would get a chance to talk about Ithorians. They have probably the coolest design of any minor alien in all of Trek and Wars. I love how their necks jut out, then their faces are vertical rises. I know a guy who hates Star Wars, but even he cites the Ithorians as something he loves. I know their culture is about gardening or whatever, who cares, the design is what matters in Star Wars. This isn't Trek. Too bad they're firmly in the D-list tier as far "aliens who get to do things" go. Even Twi'leks have more to work with. Was there a single Ithorian party member in all of TOR? Malakili You should've just said "Rancor trainer." This is my absolute favorite minor character in all of Star Wars. A less movie would have just had Luke kill the rancor and that's the end of it. No! For absolutely no reason, the monster's trainer shows up, looks over his friend and pet, and breaks down, heartbroken. One of his friends comes over and pats him on the back, and someone gives Luke a dirty look, like he's the one in the wrong here. Zero words spoken, but you learn so much about this random nobody who never appears again. It gives the Star Wars universe a simulated depth that you don't really get in other movies, especially the non-OT movies. First Order Leadership Like with most of the Disney sequels, they clearly had no idea what they were going for here. General Hux is just a screaming Nazi figurehead, the guy you see motivating the troops in a movie, but is basically just Director Krennic in terms of competence. I was almost surprised that JJ Abrams gave him an actual job to do in TRoS. General Pryde is more competent, but he's just another Nazi. Snoke, well, I'll save my thoughts on Snoke for a proper Snoke write-up, but he's also very bad at his job. Even after watching the ST, I still don't know how serious a threat I'm supposed think the First Order is. I believed that the Nazis in the OT, Vader, and Palpatine could create a space empire that takes over the galaxy. I believed that for the PT, if only because Palpatine was just manipulating them to think they could. But I do not believe that for the First Order. Shadows of the Empire A book set between ESB and RotJ, that explains how we got from the first to the second? ... Look, I'm sure it's a perfectly fine book, but I don't care. This is the height of "things that don't need to be explained." Jabba the Hutt One of the best villain designs in fiction. Jabba is the embodiment of hedonism and excess. He's just a fat slug monster who speaks in a deep, rumbling voice. His eyes mostly aren't completely open, his arms are too short to grab most objects, and saliva drips down from his lips. He's just so ***ing gross and given over to being a fat, useless monster. Critically, Jabba never actually does* anything, even move. He just sits there and gives orders. The only impressive move by Jabba is no-selling Luke's handwave. As a villain design (and a puppet), Jabba is masterful, but it's clear that he's not a challenge that requires a full movie, which is why he dies thirty minutes in. By the way, if you haven't seen it, look up the original ANH Jabba scene, where Jabba is just a short human in a cape, and it becomes very clear why Lucas cut it. Star Wars Episode I: Pod Racer The only good thing to come out of PM. Choosing a podracer and racing against your stupid middle school friend is fantastic. I beat Josh Pitchenson so many **ing times at his house, you wouldn't believe it. I can't even remember what characters I played, but I remember having a ton of fun with this game. I'd better not play it again. I'm sure I'd be horribly disappointed. Rey** Rey is another difficult character to meaningfully rank, but I'll try. First of all, I place no stock in the "Rey is a Mary Sue" stuff. I'm fine with it. No, my problem with Rey is how mishandled she is. For being the main character, you'd think Disney would have her arc planned out ahead of time. If I'm a kid who watches these movies and doesn't understand any of the behind the scenes stuff, like, what do I get out of Rey? She's a scavenger waiting for her parents to show up after twenty years, learns she has magic powers, and becomes an adventurer? Then she learns that she's a nobody and has a pseudo-relationship with the bad guy, then she learns that she's descended from Palpatine, a guy who wasn't mentioned in the sequels until the third movie? It's really **ing hard to even call this an arc. Each individual piece of Rey's journey has potential. "A nobody learns she's actually important." "A nobody learns she's not important." "Psychically linked to the villain." "The power of friendship saves the day." But the way they're all combined is so awkward and terrible that there is just no salvaging her. Hell, trying to even define Rey's personality is a challenge. She's... duteous? Loyal? Annoyed when Finn grabs her hand? I looked up the Wiki, which tries to claim she's "kind" because she rescues BB-8. Give me a break. I said this before, but Rey's journey means nothing. Taking Luke's name and taking over his abandoned farm means nothing. It is an action without purpose, something meant to look like it ties everything together, but that actually does not. Turns out we gave Disney too much credit. Snoke turned out to be just another one of JJ Abrams' mystery boxes, which meant he was prime "ruining by Rian Johnson" fodder. Although, honestly, I can't imagine anything interesting coming of this character anyway. TFA presents him as a Palpatine clone, which in the most technical sense is true (since he was eventually revealed to be a clone made by Palpatine), but honestly, what could you have done with Snoke? I almost don't even blame Rian Johnson for killing him so pointlessly, but the way it was done is just so drawn out, with Snoke slowly narrating his own death in a twist you can see coming from a mile away. tl;dr nothing character. Original ANH Jabba Scene Completely ruins all of the mystique of Jabba. Building Jabba up as a space gangster Han is scared of is way better than Han meeting him and him turning out to just be a fat guy. Han Solo Walking On Jabba's Tail Likewise, the idea that Han would disrespect Jabba like this is dumb. I realize it was done because of the way the scene was shot rather than because Lucas wanted it, but dude, just cut the scene. David Prowse's Vader Voice Hilarity incarnate. The idea of the big bad Imperial enforcer and Dark Jedi sounding like just some random guy is amazing. It's not hard to see why it was changed. Jedi Council Honestly? I don't completely hate the Jedi Council. If you have to have a Jedi ruling body, which you do, I think Lucas did it about as well as it could have been done: a bunch of hippies sitting on pillows in a circle. Too bad that they're all portrayed as idiots, though. Darth Vader Making Puns If, before RO came out, you asked me which Star Wars character would have the least tolerance for bad puns, I would have said Darth Vader. I can imagine Han making a bad pun, even Palpatine, but not Vader. It's so, so bad. Poe Dameron AKA the most nothing of nothing characters. I love how Disney tries to pretend that Poe is a main character, like they planned for him to be one of the core three. He's clearly just a character they invented in TFA to have someone we recognize fighting Starkiller Base or whatever it's called. Now, in complete fairness, Poe does get more to do in the later movies. Too bad that he's involved in the worst plotline in TLJ (the Admiral Holdo one), where he proves he's the biggest idiot ever. Also, he opens the movie with a literal yo momma joke, which is another point against him. Like, honestly, what do you want me to say about Poe? I think Disney wanted him to be the face of the Resistance, but he's a complete nothing character. Prince Xizor So he's a cunning gangster who lies and scrapes at the Emperor's feet, but is actually in charge of the most powerful criminal gang ever, to the point where he's almost at the same level of power? ... I can imagine this guy being really good in a storytelling context, like in individual stories, but I'm not crazy about the idea of any criminal organization being that powerful. Although I accept that Wookieepedia may have built him up too much. Jedi Mind Trick It's strange how ANH introduces all of these Jedi things that don't really get used. Lightsabers never even show up after the Obi-Wan/Vader duel! Same with the Jedi Mind Trick, it's used twice in the OT, once in ANH and once in RotJ. For such a powerful ability, it plays almost no role in the series. Even in the PT, it's used like once per movie, never in an important context. I think the most important Jedi Mind Trick usage is Rey getting herself released in TFA? Conceptually, it's a great idea. "The Force can have a powerful influence on the weak-minded." So this guy was an Imperial soldier, had a brief fling with Han Solo's daughter, got exiled because of a pay dispute, helped the Jedi, and then Luke forced the Imperial Remnant to take him as their leader, after having married a Jedi? Because this seems like a bit of a stretch. I assume it makes more sense all written out, but I have a difficult time imagining the Empire would accept an exiled former soldier with close ties to the Republic as their new Emperor. Like, okay, I can imagine this playing out in the books as good girl Jaina Solo having a steamy romance with bad boy Jagged Fel, and I can imagine that working, sure. Worst Star Wars Merch I googled "Worst Star Wars merch," and did not expect an entire list of articles about this. Having now scanned several of these lists, I'm going to give this one to the Darth Vader Toast Imprinter. https://www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Dart-Vader-Toaster.jpg All of the other merch items were dumb, of course, because I don't want a Star Wars aquarium or a Star Wars adult diaper (yes, that exists), but they are at least functional for what they're supposed to be. I would never want to eat a piece of bread that's been partially toasted in a weird pattern, and especially not one that's almost burned like that. Complete garbage. Phineas and Ferb Star Wars Special I don't have access to Disney+ right now, but look, I know nothing about Phineas and Ferb. I can't possibly rank this. I did watch a trailer for this, though, and it looks like a fairly standard Star Wars retelling/parody with the local characters. I wonder how many movies are so well-known that you can just do a whole plot retelling like that? Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, and what else? Darth Vader in Rogue One Basically the only memorable moment in RO. You briefly get to see Darth Vader as a normal dude would, and he effortlessly cuts through everyone. It's an effective moment, one of the few in the movie. Jango Fett When I watched the OT as a kid, I never thought about Boba Fett. To me, he was just a guy. I didn't care about his origin story at all. So the idea of learning more about it in the prequels was a complete non-starter. Like, what do we care about Boba Fett's father? Nothing. So all that's left is to analyze Jango Fett as a character unto himself. Dude's just a dude, don't know what I can tell you. I don't hate the idea of cloning a badass soldier to produce a giant army, that's weird and MGS-y, but Jango Fett himself is just a guy. *The Real* Most Nothing of Nothing Characters** Restricting this to only named film characters, I'm going with the bald pilot who gets Padme out of Naboo. Googles it Ric Oli. The only thing I remember about him is that he yells out "Shield generator's been hit," and only because of the RLM review. Making the Kessel Run in Less than 12 Parsecs As a random boast by Han Solo as he tries to impress what he thinks are just an idiot farmboy and a stupid old man, this is great. He's just throwing out nonsense because these are rural idiots (he thinks), like if you had to impress a redneck from the swamps of Louisiana and claimed to be have a triple doctorate in engineering. That's all it had to be. Too bad it's ruined in Solo by overexplaining everything, retroactively making Han honest with Luke and Obi-Wan from the start. Nute Gunray I refuse to believe that Nute Gunray could run a Taco Bell, much less a giant trade federation. I guess I can forgive this and assume he's the son of someone important and that Palpatine just murdered whoever was supposed to be in charge, but Gunray repeatedly proves himself to be the dumbest person in the entire galaxy. He does at least one stupid thing every movie! In PM, he's not even defeated by the heroes, he's defeated by Padme's black bodyguard. Do you even remember that guy's name? Even I don't remember his name. Anyway, the point is that this guy sucks for how much screen time he gets. I guess I should address his accent. It's horrible? I don't believe this was intended as an Asian stereotype, because nothing else about Gunray is very Asian-y, but it's still very bad. And who named him Gunray? Lucas? He's a merchant, not a soldier. He should be named Goldhands or something. Han x Leia Holds the dubious title of "Best Star Wars romance" even like forty years later. Leia likes being sarcastic, Han can handle her sarcasm; Leia is a princess, Han is a rogue, etc. Although their scenes are probably the slowest of ESB's, they give the movie a little heart, which it desperately needs. I hate how Disney took the romance, but so be it. One criticism I'll give is that I never liked the way Leia's hair looks in the Endor scene when they're in the Ewok village. There's no way she fit that much **ing hair under her helmet. Star Wars: Battlefront (2004)** Never played it, sorry. Like I said, I don't play many Star Wars games besides the RPGs, the only TPS from that era I like is RE4.
