Anagram 10/25/20 8:47:37 PM #457:	Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba AKA Walrus Man and **ed-Up Face Man, AKA the guys who hassle Luke at the bar for no reason. These are flawless-executed lowlife alien scum guys, good for exactly one scene before bowing out of the movie... or so I thought, until I just looked up Cornelius Evazan and learned his official species is human??? I'd always assumed his species just had messed-up faces. As a storytelling device to display what a lightsaber can do, they do their job efficiently and then exit the movie. They also help display that this is a universe of like lowlife scum losers. All in all, best use of a walrus mask I've ever seen. Scorpion Darth Vader I had to google this... I assume this is Sasori Vader? So this is like a random boss in a 1987 NES video game only released in Japan, who's like a shapeshifting scorpion who turns into Darth Vader for Luke to fight? This could very well be the most non-canon thing of all time. Mandalorians (Group)** AKA the only actual culture in all of Star Wars. Star Trek does alien cultures, Star Wars does alien costumes. But Boba Fett, man, his helmet was just soooooooooo cool that they had to make an entire TV show about people who wear similar helmets. And honestly? It works. The idea of taking in downtrodden children and turning them into a crazy warrior cult obsessed with honor works. Their religion makes sense, their catchphrase makes sense (my friggin' mom quotes it to me), everything about them is exactly what you expect to see in a crazy warrior cult, but in a way that doesn't come across as tired. Too bad we'll never see a Klingon x Mandalorian crossover. I am altering the deal, pray I do not alter it any further Really says it all, doesn't it? The Empire holds all the cards, ** you if you think you can deal with them. It also helps display that Lando is sympathetic, because we learn through this conversation that he genuinely did try to protect at least Leia and Chewbacca. It also helps display that Vader just thinks lowly of this smalltime operation Lando has going on, and just wants to be done with all of this as fast as possible. I've got a bad feeling about this Probably the best recurring line in any big franchise? You can slip this into almost any situation and it'll always be completely natural. I've probably quoted this without even meaning to. Compare this to something like Terminator's "I'll be back" or "Come with me if you want to live," where they're always awkwardly shoehorned into the movies every time except the first. Obi-Wan Series I doubt this'll ever get made. Wouldn't it be hilarious is, in true Solo and Rogue One fashion, this series goes out of its way to explain every detail we see of Obi-Wan's life in ANH? Like, the laundry detergent he uses to maintain his robes for twenty years, how he builds that hut, why he ages at double human speed. The idea of an Obi-Wan adventure series is okay, sure. Make it if you want, I don't mind. Robot Chicken Star Wars Skit This is basically just a stop-motion variation on the "Things can't get any worse" joke. Fine, I suppose. I've seen better Star Wars humor. Stormtroopers** Stormtroopers go beyond just being fascist foot soldiers with amazingly cool space helmets. It's the direction. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but all Stormtroopers sans Phasma and Finn have this same way of behaving, even into the Disney movies, where they emote via how they stand, how they cock their heads, and so on. I love the scenes that are just Stormtroopers standing around having normal boring chitchat, like this giant empire of evil is actually 90% extremely normal people, 9% Gestapo officers, and 1% wacky mysticism. One of my favorite scenes in ANH is when Luke wears the Stormtrooper uniform, an Imperial officer looks at him and signals "why aren't you responding to my radio calls," and Luke points at the helmet like the radio is busted, and the officer just nods and is like "We've got another busted transmitter," like this is just the most normal thing in the universe. Even Luke, a farmboy with no experience doing this sort of thing, just knows that these Imperial guys are boring dudes just doing a job, and will instantly believe there might be a busted piece of equipment. My point is that the Stormtrooper is a character unto itself. That's something that other franchises with giant evil armies don't get right, they tend to be played as unstoppable forces that the heroes are heroic for defeating because it's difficult. Stormtroopers are consistently portrayed as nine-to-five guys who don't care what's going on, and I really appreciate that level of detail. This is also contrastable against the clone troopers, which no one cares about. One thing changed in the Disney movies that I hate is that the Stormtroopers are now like babies that are stolen by the First Order and indoctrinated from birth? Shut up. I can't imagine how difficult that would be to organize, it'd be way cheaper and easier to just throw propaganda around and hire a bunch of normal people who don't have jobs. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. It actually fits in just fine. It would be too much if we had F'rud Jones, Valmuh Dink'lee, and Da-fa-nee Blake, but as just Shaggy, it's good. James Earl Jones Quality actor. Can you believe he was in ***ing Dr. Strangelove? He's that old. Obviously he's wonderful in Conan as well. Luke's Training on Dagobah* So good. The Jedi training should be all about learning the mystical magicalness of the Force, not about boring physical world stuff. Yoda never even bothers training Luke with a lightsaber. We get a ton of exposition on the Force that isn't clunky or boring ("Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter"), and a lot of great Star Wars quotes ("Do, or do not. There is no try."). The closed-in nature of a swamp contrasts with the open spaces of Tatooine and Hoth, but creates a nature-y atmosphere untouched by physical civilization. That Part Where Luke Sees His Head in Vader's Helmet Emphasizes that the Dark Side will getcha if you're not careful, foreshadows that Vader is Luke's father (spoilers), and is a good spooky moment in its own right. You're My Only Hope As a quote, this lacks a lot of the deeper meanings of other Star Wars-y quotes. This is just a fun little meme-before-memes-were-a-thing that Leia says. Star Wars Manga I read the sequence posted. It cuts out the part where they actually analyze the Death Star plans! If you were just reading this with no knowledge of the movies, it would be pretty confusing. This was actually enjoyable to read, even if it's just a direct translation of the movie into anime form, right down to unaltered dialogue. This kind of stuff amuses me. Anakin x Padme Among the worst movie romances of all time. Legendary, even. See, the basic idea of a celibate monk falling in love with one of the most powerful women in the galaxy, and her returning his affections but not wanting to get involved because it would ruin both of them, is okay. In fact, it's even good. But that's not really how it's played? It's very nebulous what the Jedi Order thinks of sex, all we get from the movies is that you aren't supposed to have worldly attachments, so Anakin's motives are only like 80% clear. Worse is Padme, who has no particular reason for not wanting to bang Anakin, because it's never established if she'll get in trouble for it or not. But beyond that, the more basic issues are the dialogue and acting. Basically I can't do this better than RLM, so I won't try, but I will say that pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. Imperial Probe Droid Weird little spindly legs, a revolving turret-like head, it's all very nice. You can easily imagine the Empire building a billion of these things and just shooting them everywhere to check for Rebel scum. Great design, great usage. JJ Abrams Someone nominated him in my Star Trek topic as well. Abrams is... bleh. He's so hard to rate. The Abrams movies I've seen are Armageddon, Super 8, Cloverfield, and the Trek and Wars movies. What I'll say about Abrams is that he's a very competent director, I guess. I'm never confused about what's going on when watching his movies. Look, I don't know. I don't want to say that Abrams ruined Star Wars, but he's at least 30% of the reason Star Wars is ruined. I don't know if it was his idea to remake ANH as TFA, but he did it either way, and then he made the sloppiest Star Wars movie in existence with TRoS, which I'm sure was all him. Yeah, Rian Johnson screwed everything up, but really, Abrams' strategy in the first movie was just to plant "mystery boxes" everywhere and assume it'll all work out well. We never even got the answer to how Maz Kanada got Luke's lightsaber (but that's a story for another time). Super 8 is bad, by the way. The Joker (Batman TAS) The definitive Joker. More Joker-y than even the comics Joker. No one has or ever will nail the Joker as perfectly as Mark Hamill. That evil laugh is the eternally perfect evil laugh of all villains. Hitler vs Vader (ERBoH) I prefer the ERBoH that aren't so one-sided. Don't get me wrong, obviously I like Vader more than Hitler (I can't believe I had to type that), but this clearly wants you to side with Vader. Also, they completely abandon Vader's iconic breathing for the sake of the song, but boy, if there's any one thing Vader's worse at than screaming NOOOOOO it's rapping. The voice just doesn't work for that, whereas Hitler's screeching madness works perfectly. 2010, huh. No way this gets made today. Darth Revan Basically wasn't a real character in KotOR, any more than the protagonist of Baldur's Gate or whatever. I like the idea of a Jedi who can't stand by while innocent people die, but his attachments cause him to fall to the Dark Side, but that's not really the point of this character. The point of this character is to have an amazing plot twist partway through the game. And it is a great plot twist, don't get me wrong. I never saw Darth Revan while playing TOR (I don't know if Republic players get to meet him), but I looked him up just now and he's kind of a boring bald guy. What a waste. My Revan was the one with a lot of hair. Being Out of Ideas What a clever way to nominate Disney's use of the Star Wars franchise! I kid, I kid (but not really). Being out of ideas sucks. You're passionate and want to contribute, but you just can't think of any way to interact with the thing you like. The Fandom Menace So this is a group of people dedicated to complaining about the PT and ST? Eh, okay. I can't fault them. Despite this topic, I honestly don't care that much about Star Wars. It's worth a GameFAQs topic here and there, but that's about it. Hardware Wars This came out in 1977! That means they had months to make it, and still just knew that everyone would know this movie. I guess that's not too dissimilar from a skit made the same year as Avengers Endgame making fun of it, but still. Unfortunately, this commits the cardinal sin of comedies, which is that it's not funny. This is to be expected, since it predates the invention of humor in 1984 with Ghostbusters. Most of its jokes rely on either the idea of recreating Star Wars moments with kitchen appliances or extremely lazy puns (Leia is "Anne-droid" despite not being a robot, etc). This is worse than making a Star Trek parody starring Captain Smirk, whose only character trait is that he smiles a lot, because at least that makes sense as a joke. One thing I did note here is that it makes fun of the lame Obi-Wan/Darth Vader swordfight. I guess even in 1977, audiences still weren't impressed. The Future of the Franchise It's very bleak. Since the Disney takeover, there's been one competent use of the franchise, which is the Mandalorian. Everything else was mishandled to enormous degrees. I also don't think you can really launch a franchise around the Mandalorian? It was clearly intended as a side project with lower stakes, so I don't think it works as the central point of the IP -- and yet that is what it has become. That Old Republic TV show they're hyping also looks terrible. I just don't think this franchise has anywhere to expand, and its core ideas (Rebels vs Space Nazis with ninja wizards mixed in) are just not that interesting once you're over them. I think Star Wars benefits a lot from the particular moment in time when it came out: the 70s and 80s, just before like IP branding was a major thing. Star Wars was one of the first codified fantasy/sci-fi works out there, one that set the stage for everything that came afterward... but it's over. Like, I just kind of view Star Wars as being over. It's like Harry Potter -- I guess you can do more stuff with if it you want to, but the position it occupies in pop culture is over, and there's nowhere to really take the idea and make more things out of it, and making more movies and books and whatever won't change that. Basically, I cannot imagine anything happening except Disney maintaining this franchise as an undying zombie for the foreseeable future. It may even be a worse fate than Star Trek's. Prerelease Hype for Phantom Menace As RLM put it, never will there be something so hyped up that's such a disappointment. Franchise revivals didn't really happen back then, so everyone wanted to see this. This was the movie to see in 1999, it had been sixteen years since the previous Star Wars film! Now franchise revivals happen constantly. We had three different Spiderman and Terminator universes in ten years. What I'm saying is that that excitement of an old franchise returning to glory and then disappointing everyone will never happen again. Now only the disappointment is left. What're the last big fantasy/sci-fi franchises that remain unruined? Lord of the Rings, but I'm sure the Amazon show will handle that job. I guess it's Back to the Future. Cavalry Charge Across a Star Destroyer I mean, I get it. You want a non-technological faction fighting the First Order, like the Ewoks versus the Empire. My question is why? What does this add to the movie? People complained about Leia using the Force in space, but this is so much worse. At least Leia has magic powers. I realize that they're in an area of space inundated by magical Sith evilness and that's why they can breathe, but the more you mix the mystical and the physical, the less interesting things become. I also kind of think that no one would raise horses for a cavalry charge in the Star Wars universe? Animals to move around on special terrain like desert and tundra are one thing, but dedicated cavalry charge animals in a universe with speeders and lasers? You're mixing genres and completely pitching realism here. I realize that Star Wars was always silly, but generally speaking, the technological aspect of things was always as grounded as a space opera can really be. Anyway, dumb. Fanboys (Film) I've never seen this, and I can't really comment on a movie I don't know much about. Sorry! Kell Tainer This guy screams "minor character." I guess you have to have these types of unimportant nobodies in the story to give the real characters time to shine. Apologies if he's actually super important, though! All-in-all, not bad. The Idea that Critics who like TLJ are Paid Shills I don't believe they're paid shills, I just believe they have boring opinions. I almost never look up professional or audience opinions of movies before I see them, so I can't give any specific examples of TLJ critics being bad or paid, but really, I think it's possible to genuinely like TLJ. I'm not one of the people who does, but hey. Kanye West I do not listen to his music or care about his political opinions. I grew up in Calabasas, which back then was obscure. Then celebrities like Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, and Kanye West made it famous. I can't really fault him for that, but the guy just seems so obnoxious.
