A poll just came out that has Trump up by only 1 in Alaska.

I assumed it was a crazy outlier but checked 538 out of curiosity, and apparently there have only been four polls of Alaska this year, all with Trump between +1 and +6:

Alaska is interesting demographically, cause it's split between multiple cultures.

Alaska's panhandle is similar culturally to Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland (where Juneau Alaska is located).

Alaska does have a region that is similar politically to somewhere like Montana (the part with Anchorage). This is the most populous region that usually controls state politics.

And then Alaska has a third region that is basically First Nations, where the natives were like "fuck you we never ceeded our land" and the courts were like "huh, yeah, there's no paperwork saying otherwise cause nobody went up there, guess it's yours now." That's the region changing the name of all the mountains that were named after US presidents back to traditional names in their old languages.

Anyway, two of these regions fucking hate Trump, and the third Montana-ish region...has some potential to swing (much like Montana does--kind of hates both parties, and the government in general, which for now has allied them more with republicans, but it's a shakable alliance).

The new NBCLX/YouGov poll, conducted of 3,190 Americans online from Sept. 25-28, found 83% of respondents who indicated they had a preferred presidential candidate said always telling the truth in the debate was more important than their candidate saying what he needs to say to win the debate. That includes 88% of those who identified as Democrats, compared to 81% who identified as independent and 75% who identified as Republicans.

It often boils down to

"Trump is creating peace in the middle east" therefore he doing God's work.

But it disregards the fact that the dispute is between Isreal and Palestine and none of the "peace agreements" involve Palestine!

That would be like if you have 2 children who both claim that a basketball belongs to them. And rather than make an agreement between those 2 children about who owns the basketball, you get a THIRD child from down to block to agree with one of the first two.

And somehow that's a peaceful resolution.

.

It's willful ignorance to an absurd degree.

It's the same thing with abortion.

I personally think there should be as FEW abortions as possible. As a result I think we should fund programs like planned parenthood that will help reduce the likelihood of unplanned pregnancy. And I believe we should support sexual education programs that will provide teenagers with the information that they need that will reduce the likelihood of unplanned pregnancy.

The legality of abortion isn't the only factor here. People would still GET abortions if they had an unplanned pregnancy. But the lack of pragmatism by Christians always astounds me. They would rather take the lofty approach of outlawing abortion without recognizing the contributing factors that could be considered to tangibly reduce the need for abortions.

I defer to your experiences but I don't think this is incompatible with my take. My main point is that Trump and his admin take plenty of "pro-Christian" power moves and for a lot of the base, the action is enough. Also, I think people in Trump's circle are true believers or knowledgeable enough to feed him the right things to say. That's all I mean.

Now, the rationalizations and whether white Christian nationalism is an enactment of "God's Will" I will leave to the judgement of individuals.

My very cynical take on this is that Christianity as a religion has a very obvious vested interest in peace in specifically Israel and Trump's actions prioritizing Israel approach it from that angle and not a material, social, or geopolitical one.

Like what else does recognizing Jerusalem as the capital and moving the embassy accomplish more than being powerful religious symbolism?

That's one take.

The even more cynical take would be that the evangelical church was founded before the civil war, and was the only institution that the south controlled during reconstruction--and therefore the only institution they could use to push their ideas against the ideas the north was trying to push on them. (The south would ultimately win that cultural battle and impose Jim Crow laws).

...Which would mean that the Evangelical church DOES have principles. ...Principles of white supremacy.
