Sleeping in my dorm room. My roommate came back from his early class, eager to turn on our improvised TV set-up that rarely got used, saying his parents told him some people crashed planes into the World Trade Center. I didn't believe him.

Social studies class. It was elementary school so they didn't tell us what happened but we knew something was up because they held us in that class all the way until lunch. I eventually found out during lunch when I asked a family friend who worked at the school.

It was a K-12 school and I hear that a lot of the high school classes did that.

idk maybe they ran out of tvs. Also it was NY maybe they didn't want to scare us?

Our school told teachers to pretend it wasnt happening and continue the day as normal. Dont show news and dont talk about it.

Most listened to that but our history teacher who just turned on the news because this was clearly a historical event happening.

I was sleeping. I think it happened at like 6 A.M. Arizona time anyway, but my oldest brother overslept and didn't take me to school that day, so the school called my mom to find out where I was. She always left for work before we got up so she had no idea and took off from work to find us all asleep and was like "how did you sleep through planes crashing into buildings?" Obviously a joke because we were on the other side of the country, a joke she still occasionally makes to this day

I was also in 4th grade. There seem to be a lot of us!

I was in the 4th grade as well and we had a surprise recess at 9AM. We were all pretty confused because our teachers didn't tell us much but I remember one kid saying that some bad people stole some planes. That didn't seem like enough of a reason for surprise recess but then when we got back to class our teacher tried to tearfully explain the situation. I don't think most of us really understood or processed what was going on.

Since I live in the Pacific time zone, I was asleep. At some point, my mom woke me up frantically screamed "we've been attacked!" However, that was such a vague statement that when I finally got to see the news, I was actually relieved that it wasn't something that was happening to us directly. But then it quickly sunk in the real ramifications of a successful terrorist attack on the WTC and the Pentagon, and who knew what was next. Would they be flying planes into casinos here in Vegas? Does this mean World War III is on the horizon?

Waking up and about to start getting ready for school.

Probably had been up for about 10 minutes when the second plane hit.

Still went to school. Was mostly a waste since we spent all day watching the news anyway.

Though i suppose the social aspect of being together during a national tragedy was interesting.

it was picture day at my school. our first period teacher wheeled in the tv after the first plane was hit- we ended up seeing the second strike live

my second period teacher didn't believe me when i relayed the news, and apologized way too much later on- i was a bit of a joker.

i don't think i really understood the significance at the time. i was in full edge mode in my head- "disasters happen in other countries every day, how self-centered are we?"

as i got a little older it made more sense- a community has to mourn for itself. distance matters

Was at school in 8th grade. In between classes friend came up to me and said the world trade center was on fire and me not having a clue what that was was just like.....ok. Global studies was my next class and the teacher had the news on the tv, just as class started the first tower fell. Watched the second tower fall there as well and the rest of the school day went on as normal with none of the teachers even acknowledging anything happened.

In class in 5th grade. My teacher turned on the TV after the first plane hit, and we watched the second one hit. Then I guess there was some discussion among the teachers and we were told not to discuss what we saw with the other classes who hadn't seen it. Peoples' parents were picking them up early all day, especially after the Pentagon was hit (this was in NoVA).

i was in 3rd grade and they didn't tell us the whole school day.

when I went home my mom was standing at the bus stop, which was weird because normally she'd be at work. then she filled me in.

i didn't get the enormity of the situation at the time. I was most upset that baseball games were being postponed.
