the only ones i would include in this would be Mithos & Yuan, not even the Generals. they have a handful of memorable lines but i don't consider them to be worth ranking in a series ranking personally. none of them would be above C tier anyway so i don't put too much thought to it.

in fact the only character I can think of that I would include in my series rankings outside of like MAIN VILLAIN and party characters is Legretta. everyone else is unimportant for me in the bigger scope of things tbh. some would definitely be ahead of the lower-tier mains in a head to head but overall i'm indifferent and wouldn't include 99% of them.

i like Genis. he has some funny lines and battle quotes are pretty catchy. well most of the cast has fun battle quotes anyway except Sheena. he's pretty sympathetic as a scared kid realizing he has to grow up for like 1000 years in a world prejudiced against him and he's got to put on that mature/wannabe tough front because otherwise the world wins. so you gotta just flaunt your gifts and say fuck the world mang.

i was probably indifferent to him when i first played it but i used him all the time so i could do Prism Stars. that early scene where he trips and just loudly says "OWWWWW" alerting the guards lmao and leading to them getting kicked out of the village tho. i don't even hold it against him because the game is just goofy like that and i love it for it.

i think Regal is zzz tbh. he has some GREAT lines but i find it hard to love a character simply because of memes. this might be a lie in case i remember a case like this later. it'll usually bump them up but it won't make me like you solely because of it.

really used to like Presea because little girl holding big weapon lel but honestly she's kind of zzz too.

Colette and Lloyd are fine. i've probably grown to like them more as the years pass just through playing the game so many times. and the trope-y stuff is like meh but because it was my first exposure to them it's whatever. definite bias here that i will never let go.

i can't imagine i would have a lot of people in bottom/shit tier. like obviously Iselia Mayor and Pope are garbage but they're also so minor in the scope of things I wouldn't even afford them the time to think about them.

and i'm just overall indifferent to a lot of characters in games so i can't even think of anyone in any game that are big enough to take notice and also hate enough to put in shit tier aside from like Senel and Shirley....and Wakka.

yeahhh I get Presea and Regal, I liked them more in the past and this playthrough didn't really feel the same but old biases are tough to break

I used to sleep on Raine probably due to relation to Genis but also honestly just her design isn't great for me, but her character is certainly fun that I do gotta put her over Colette

tho I really like Colette & Presea together since I honestly feel I relate to them the most... I guess also tying in Zelos with the silent personal torture in their characters. Probably closer to Colette's version of putting on a smile like everything's alright though as opposed to Zelos's more outgoing joker personality

... kinda sad Colette is my lowest of the non-Genis playables with that in mind but it feels like she doesn't shine as much as she should basically from Tethe'alla on and lacks her own individuality

the worst thing about Raine is her outfits (i guess swimsuit is her best one) but i have a thing for teachers and she has that freaky side and is a boss. Chronicles also added crossover costumes and she looks soooo good in Pascal's outfit.

also part of the reason i have Colette up and Sheena down is because Colette had this glitch you could abuse to cheese arena and I loved it. and Sheena's combat sucks...

also I'm resonating with Mithos's abandonment issues more this time as I've identified that to my own isolation for years now

also helps Tales villains so far are ranging acceptable to worthless aside from Dhaos who I also felt wasn't fleshed out in-game and I'm really appreciating Mithos's actual complexity, development into the fallen hero with a lingering kinship to past allies and half-elves like Genis/Raine

i prefer ENG audio if equal quality but especially for JRPG dubs it's so fucking inconsistent. JP voices will never be bad for me but ENG ranges all over the place. or they'll have that one character who kind of necessitates switching to JP for the whole cast.

also some games do weird fucking bullshit when they localize like insert memes and i hate that. but also dialogue for JRPGs are ACTUALLY cringe that sound awful in English. so more often than not, JP is the way to go. but Symphonia is one of like the three games where I go dub. except for skits i guess lol

i'm regretting that i didn't start a "selfie every day" at the beginning of the year now

A bit into Tales of Rebirth... interesting so far, the battle system is actually pretty technical. I like this Rush Gauge feature where you essentially shift into defensive and offensive modes -- build up RG by attacking and you do more damage but also take more of it. Also lets you guard more, and the more attacks you guard brings your RG down until Guard Break. Being low on RG though is also still nice since you take less damage and artes heal you more. Also, heals come from any old arte but again as per Rush Gauge you'll heal nothing when it's high, a good deal (depending on the arte?) when it's low. Also you can actually easily manipulate your RG too to essentially switch to whichever mode as per need. The 3 tracks system ain't bad either, so it's not like I had a complete step back from 3D. One bit of frustration without being fluent in the language though is the Force Cube system which it seems kind of shifts around your character's stats priorities buuut yeah I can't make much sense of it yet unfortunately... it's complicated, but that's not necessarily bad... just difficult for my shitty nihongo skills. Following youtube battle system tutorial there seems to be an Ougi system as well - note, Hi Ougi is jp for Mystic Arte, but these seem to be more common higher level artes, not some ultimate desperation move like actual Mystic Artes. We'll see when I actually get to that, but yeah as I said pretty technical battle system it seems.

Story-wise it's certainly different... kinda I guess. First impressions on Veigue singleminded edgy jerk, not a fan of this emotional dependency with the standard Tales kind girl character... buuut as the story's moved on he's not too self-centered & stubborn to be annoying as he was in the intro. Mao's a fun kid, Eugine seems to be a pretty serious legit character which on the surface I wasn't expecting with the animalese appearance... but I guess I gotta get used this animal race being a thing. From seeing him previously through Crestoria's random R memorias I thought he'd be minor. Likewise I thought Walto looked like some blatantly evil animal mini-boss but after his introduction he's a bit more complex figure than that.

So yeah lookin' nice overall so far, you might say my expectations were low to begin with but I'm not sold on Veigue yet and I still needs some good female characters.
