Yeah, the US has famously reported people who died in car accidents, of overdoses, and even suicides, as COVID deaths so long as they tested positive at some point.

Sounds like conspiracy theory fuel for plandemic believers. But I can also see how that may be true. Not just in reporting car accidents, suicides, etc., which honestly there is no justification for, but even when say, an elderly person with terminal cancer contracts coronavirus and dies...check the box for another coronavirus death....ummm...wait a minute, really?

I mean, what I say is from my job which has advised multiple hospitals on this, as many of them asked us if it would be legal to do and we were like "Yeah, go for it." It doesn't outright say death by Coronavirus, it's reported to whatever they have to report the numbers to as Coronavirus-related. I don't know if that's the number they take when they talk about COVID deaths or not, but it's definitely how this sort of thing is reported from hospitals.

For what it's worth I know someone who works at a hospital and says she's been told the same thing.

I mean I'm sure the numbers are at least something resembling the truth because you can only fiddle with em so much but yeah.

From my experience, cause of death is a lot more complicated than one would think and the factors related to it can be numerous.

Using the terminal cancer example. Sure, the patient was going to die soon, but COVID-19 could have hasten their death. On the flip side, people die from secondary infections so technically you could argue that it wasn't COVID-19 that did it.

The number of people who have coronavirus and die of something else (and would have died without corona anyway) would be completely negligible. By assumption the two events are independent, and your absolute chances of being infected by covid so far and dying of something else in a particular few month span are both very low.

Why am I being linked with SMuffin here? All I said was a fact about how the hospitals report deaths when COVID is involved. I literally even said I didn't know if that's how they take the COVID death stats more than once.

I can't confirm whether or not the stats we get are truly all people who die of COVID-19 or not, but hospitals report any deaths of people who had COVID-19 and passed, even if they technically didn't pass because of COVID-19, as COVID-related deaths in order to get better funding.

Source: My job
I can only state that we are not doing that at the hospital I work at.

I find it really strange that they wouldn't report it like that at your hospital considering it's not only allowed for more funding but encouraged. My sister who works at a hospital in Philly is also saying that's how they're reporting it also.

To expand on my previous post: if the deaths being recorded as covid deaths are of all deaths of people who are confirmed covid positive, then *at most* you've overcounted covid deaths by a factor of 1+P(death given covid in time t)/P(death given no covid in time t). Since a person's chances of dying with covid are much higher than their chances of dying without covid in a short span of time (a few months here), that factor will not be much higher than 1. Do there exist some number of recorded covid deaths that were actually caused by something else, unexacerbated by covid? Most likely yes, but I would be shocked if they outnumbered actual covid deaths that we've just missed (and if deaths were actually, say, 135k instead of 139k that would not change our qualitative assessment of the impact of the virus at all).

Looking at the CDC about 1 million Americans would have died over the last four months (in a normal year), wouldn't that give an error of around 14k or am I misunderstanding your formula?

I stated a few months, but actually I think the relevant timescale would be the average time that a given person has covid before dying (I'm getting conflicting numbers on this from googling, but it seems to be on the order of a few weeks?), at least assuming they're not being recorded as covid deaths if they test positive, recover, and then die of something else a month or two later.

I'm obviously not a scientist and I'm not expecting people here to be, but if there are multiple strains of the virus is this still cause for optimism? Serious question.

So the way the Coronavirus works is that it mutates towards the end of the sequence. Which means the mutations are generally less of mutations and many if not all strains can be contained via a single vaccine many scientists believe

They still typically share several markers held the antibodies, so they are still effective.

Its likely any vaccine would be modified yearly like the flu vaccine.

Since the S-protein of the virus is what's targeted with antibodies, mutations related to that protein are important for conferring immunity. There was a significant one that likely happened very early on referred to as 'D614G' which is theorized to make it spread more easily but so far neutralizing antibodies seem to attack it as successfully as it does antigens of the original sequencing. So yes, it's cause for optimism as long as the antibodies still successfully neutralize the virus.

It's definitely still an area of concern, though, but so far it seems unlikely to be an immediate one. I imagine it could mutate sometime later in a way that requires new vaccines adapted for new strains.

I took someone else's word for what it said. They said half exhibited a symptom of some sort and 21% had 1 serious symptom at least. So, if that's not accurate then oops. That said, they were also saying moderna isn't a trustworthy company also so who knows.
