I've said it before but I can only really enjoy MARIA if it's sped up - being slow isn't necessarily a death knell but in this case it just feels droning. Ready to Shave is uh not really my thing either but it's not as dull to be sure.
Still strongly prefer the anime version of DH but this one is still good. Feels very dark and EPIC compared to the other Caligula songs. Bomberman Hero was lowkey one of my favorite N64 games and I enjoyed this song, but it's outclassed here.

marias soo niiiiiiiiice i know its slow and REGAL and doesn't really do anything at all interesting but GOD DAMN ITS SO NICE. daisuke achiwa atelier rock instruments are so good haruka shimotuski is so nice this song is just. its nice. broken record saying but that's the best way i can put it. guitar starting at 4:00 is such a nice contrast to the slow song by adding a faster solo i like that part a lot!! the specific part of the melody at 4:37 is def my favorite bit of the song by a long shot. great song. i appreciate what ready to shave is going for but it's not for me at all!!! i like cheese but this is permesan cheese and I Do Not Like Parmesan :((( maria is the kind of rock i like and ready to shave is the rock i dont like, though i do like electronic elements enough to where this is still in the 6.x realm. easy match for me oops

Hello Once Again Caligula!! Distorted Happiness is always something that I think I like less than I do and then when I listen I'm like OH YEAH THIS OWNS like straight away when it kicks in at 0:30 pretty much its like oh. yeah. yep. and then when the chorus kicks in i REMEMBER HOW MUCH THIS CHORUS KICKS MAJOR ASS very good Evil Anime song \DUNN/ piano hit. Redial is very cute and fun and BREAKS YOOOOOOUR WAY TO BEAUUUUUUUTIFUL GIIIIIIIIRLS i love it but its kinda too bland to really super stand out, especially against distorted happiness even though its "pretty close"

The start of Ready to Shave is actually pretty fun, and then it just kinda continually gets worse as it goes along (though the end is nice). The start of MARIA is probably also the best part, but that's okay because the whole song is great!!!!

Redial's kinda okayish. I think I like every part of DH more than every part of Redial and I don't even like DH that much.

Hypnospace is the weird sort of faux-90s retro-vision silliness I want to appreciate, but this sort of vocal focus song won't be too likely to rank too high for me. Fortunately, it's up against another vocal song, one that is slow, sets a sort of "sad but hopeful" tone I don't care for, and uses an instrumentation I don't fully care for as well. So I get to vote for the song with fun complex silly synth stuff after all, hooray! Good variety in what the song has to offer too. Gets a bit repetitive in the middle with the high voices but parts other than that are pretty great. I'm pretty sure I've like, heard this song before from VGMGGs or just watching this game but I don't think I've actually -appreciated- it as much as I do from currently listening to it here right now, honestly I'm sort of surprised at how much I'm liking this at the moment. Easy pick here really.

oh man a return of controversy song from vgmc13. So I've already written about it before I don't have to which is cool because I'd rather start off this section by talking about Bomberman Redial does bomberman use a phone. Bomberman Hero is the sort of interesting kind of N64 OST I probably ought to like and Redial here is an example from it, but, in some way I feel like I'm less into this track than I ought to be. I'm like, not really feeling it that much man. It's got cool sounds, but the tune never really strikes anything strongly for me, and just kinda feels like whatever background music, sorry. Still, it's up against vocal focus song with unpleasant whispers. But also still, Distorted Happiness does have some pretty cool Distorted techno sections. This match is closer for me than match 1, which, may or may not be saying anything since like I said match 1 wasn't close.

Ugh, I hate how Megalovania has this unavoidable "aura" about it that influences my vote against it without anything regarding listening to it at all, y'know, the important part. Chocolate Missile is still probably the most positive reaction from vocals I've had in these contests and has other cool parts about it, and I want to reward it !! Megalovania here is retired but also still in the main contest again anyways. it's also quite an overplayed meme anywhere online. Which is once again, not a commentary on how it sounds! As I mentioned this UNDERTALE version is notably more likeable for me than the smash version....ugh why do youtubers struggle so much with looping Undertale music?!?! It makes no sense to me. Undertale music is literally the easiest thing to loop. Tobyfox is lazy dog and makes the audio files loop themselves if you like, have it start over again As Soon As it ends. This uploader almost did that but managed to add an ugly little audio gap during that loop seam. Boo! Maybe their video software is just garbage or something. Anyway uh even without that, Chocolate Missile feels like a song that gives a better reaction from listening to, especially with the section at 1:27. But this is still a real close match, no doubt, despite how one sided I think this writeup has been.

Match 1: There's something about MARIA being a final boss theme that completely subverts the traditional final boss music paradigm and just goes for being a slow rock ballad that I find really appealing. It goes for such a simple song structure, but does it in such a powerful way that I just can't not love this, MARIA is great! Man, as much as I love cheesy music, Ready to Shave is just not good. This sounds like the music to an Old Spice commercial. The background music in it isn't even bad, but it's wasted on a meme.

Match 2: I'm glad Distorted Happiness was able to get in fairly this year (i.e. not by being nominated as the anime version). Great discovery from last year, and still my favorite Caligula song. Redial is decent, but not particularly memorable.

ToC: Oh hi Megalovania, song that managed to get a slot in both the main bracket and in ToC. Good match, but it's a lot easier to find stuff in the proven winners of ToC that are better than Megalovania. Chocolate Missile is this really cool, unique song, and was another one of my favorite discoveries of last year.

I tried to search the Bomberman Hero OST for this one song I remembered from it. Couldn't quite identify it. This is one of the more vanilla tracks, but still good. I think the song I'm thinking of plays on some early-to-mid game stages?

i'm only listening on my phone while also in a discord call (friend is afk) before going to sleep, at 4:30 in the morning so full disclosure the songs sound less than ideal this listen and my judgment may be a little bit more off than usual

aaaaanyway... maria is maria. i don't dislike it by any real means. some songs are made to be viewed more broadly feeling for the general tone or feeling it evokes, and i feel it's safe to say it's one of them, being a gratifying ballad and all. by contrast... and i really hate to say this since it goes against my standard feelings on the song and all, but ready to shave is the kind of song that wishes it could be viewed like maria... because i mean... as someone who liked stuff like the impresario, stuff on OL Remix etc etc, I like songs with gag lyrics like this with actual songs to back them up, but when it comes to having to actually evaluate them like this... i can't just overlook that contrast, you know. it is a legitimate subjectively detracting point, which is very unfortunate when otherwise there was a pretty decent chance i'd take it

there are definitely other songs out there that cater to the strengths of redial as well as it if not more so, but that doesn't change the fact that it is one of those tracks and rocks because of that. a perfect theme for so many things, really. anyway, its opponent, a song that doesn't even try to be perfect in distorted happiness... actually benefits from the added "distortion" this sitting with the discord call and all. pretty good match actually

MARIA is my 190th favorite in the contest! as time's gone on the reasons for me hating this track have changed. I used to be more bothered specifically by it hinging on a 4 chord progression that's one I do not like, but i don't think that's quite it anymore. it's not like just because i like "complex music" that i inherently dislike "simplicity" when half my favorite music is specifically extremely minimal and simple, and i can name plenty of simple 4-chord looping songs where i love them specifically for the progression (even "common" ones, though not usually the particular one represented in this song). at this point my frustration with this song comes completely from something else. it's the same thing that makes me despise epic metal versions of christmas songs or "Pokemon - Route 1 [EPIC METAL COVER]". it's like, i mean just put simply I don't want this "epic" instrumentation applied to music that i perceive as "happy" and this sounds like fucking graduation ceremony music to me. the guitar solo sounds much like it's in the wrong place to me I hate it, but i'd like it if the music it was present within actually felt dark or something I'd be excited about it. it's maybe a stupid hangup, but i think most of why I like electric guitar when I like it is because it feels "edgy" and "cool" and when it's soaring over something i perceive as extremely not that then i lose interest

Ready to Shave is my 24th favorite in the contest! I like how this goes 4 bars of 4/4, 8 bars of 5/4, [7/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4]x2, 12 bars of 4/4, 8 bars of 5/4, [7/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4]x2, 24 bars of 4/4, 40 bars of 5/4, 1 bar of 3/4, [5/4, 4/4]x14, 4/4..........THIS is the definition of my taste in music in 2011, maybe not as much as burning force medley but it's pretty close. What I wanted most at that time was "prog rock" composition applied to "80s synth" stuff, aand that's EXACTLY what this is. IT's HARD TO FIND music that sounds like this! Prog lost popularity after the 70s ended very sharply, and the few prog bands who did continue into the 80s lost a lot of their complexity too. So whenever I'd find some prog band that had something this mixed meter that came out in the 80s and SOUNDED like it came out in the 80s, I'd be overwhelmingly excited! This is literally "more proggy" than most of my "80s synth music with prog composition" that I'd dug deep for and saved and held dear then (though a lot simpler- especially tonality-wise, than the stuff I seek out now. but this type of "stereotypical dramatic song in minor" was my favorite back then anyways). If I'd known this existed back then it'd be legit a top 10 favorite song for me ever. The instrumentation isn't quite my favorite 80s-adjacent stuff, synths are a bit more analog-y, not any FM here, and a lot of my favorite 80s production tropes aren't really here, but it's still undeniably 80s sounding! the xylophone peeking in the back sometimes alongside the synths is great. i don't perceive this as a joke at ALL mostly because i have a hard time paying attention to lyrics or having them ever influence my reaction to a track, if anything "silly lyrics" just makes me think of prog bands i like like Zappa or Bubblemath anyways. likewise I never found 80s synths "cheesy" or ""dated"", can't think anything other than EPIC SOUND when I hear them, they're just timbres I like the sound of, and I'm always happy to hear whenever they're still used in modern music (or actual 80s music of course!)

Distorted Happiness is my 135th favorite in the contest! i'm in the smaller camp that really really wishes this were the anime version, the detuning /made/ this track for me, and even the more normal rest of it has less sharp production here than what i recall. this'd be significantly higher ranked if it were the anime version. I still like this more than all the other caligula tracks in the contest though! dissonant bits are successfully climactic in timing and really fun. I love the edgy distorted vocals and whispering. Some really cool sounds here too, the weird high pitched distorted electronic thing at 2:55 is INSANE cool sounding to me. the more melodic parts are nice and fun and dramatic, cool rhythmic playfulness in the rhythms of the melody sometimes. Dislike nothing about this, really fun listen.

Redial is my 72nd favorite in the contest! I LOVE BOMBERMAN HERO OST. i like jungle/dnb/etc as a thing and bomberman hero's probably the most raw, pure example of jungle-style music in a game soundtrack. this isn't one of my favorites in the ost (actually just skimmed through the ost and realized this is basically my least favorite track in the game lol oops, did not even realize that, if THIS is the low point of this ost for me though it shows how much I like the soundtrack!), I think maybe it's a bit too bright/hopeful/happy/melodic/catchy for my liking compared to the rest. Plenty of others in the game are weirder or darker and have more focus on just "cool chords and atmosphere", but i don't dislike this at all~! 0:32's held out chord pads are REALLY GOOD and sound ALIVE. I've talked before about how I find it hard to appreciate n64 music a lot of time, i could go into the technical reasons behind why, but in the end, this eschews my common frustrations with the system's music, definitely one of my favorite soundtracks on the n64. i think the jungle style's actually a good deal of why this gets around the problems i typically have with the system's music too. it can get around me feeling like it's not full enough by using chord samples and drum loops and things (and as a result, actively leans into the types of harmonies and chord changes i like most). definitely a fun game ost to look at the sequence data of as well.

Megalovania is my 53rd favorite ToC entrant! I don't want to waste my time trashing this again when I already did with the Smash version in the main bracket. I hate this version slightly less but it's still one of my least favorite Toby Fox songs- I really never think about how popular/memetic/whatever it is when making that assessment as I said last time, it's hyper-popularity is pretty out of my consciousness. My frustration with this isn't that it's "annoying because it's popular" or anything dumb like that, it's just legit probably my least favorite track compositionally in the whole ost, but at least this is my preferred version of it sound-wise. really hate how i'm probably coming across as contrarian anti-toby fox in this contest because I'm NOT, I like a lot of his music! This contest just happens to somehow have Smash Megalovania and Battle Tower BOTH which are possibly my 2 least favorite toby fox songs. Undertale version of Megalovania's maybe a bit higher but it's still not representative at all of what i like about toby's stuff.

Chocolate Missile still 14th favorite out of 56! EAST(EASY) MAtch. feel VERY strongly about matches 1 and 3.

MARIA vs Ready to Shave: MARIA is super slow and offers absolutely nothing to me. Didn't like anything about this track. Ready to Shave is some of the corniest stuff I've heard in a long time, and I think I might dislike it more than MARIA. Its as dull as MARIA but the lyrics just make it a lot worse.

Distorted Happiness vs Redial: While Distorted Happiness is far from my favorite Caligula songs, its still pretty good. The instrumental doesn't hold up as well as the other Caligula songs, but the vocals are still golden as always. Redial is alright. I was never big on Bomberman songs and Redial isn't an exception. Still, it is pretty catchy, so I guess thats a plus depending on how you look at it.

Chocolate Missile vs Megalovania: Despite everything Megalovania is still a pretty solid track, but I don't like it as much as Chocolate Missile. Maybe I'm just numb to Megalovania by now.
