FUCK. I had a good run on the top 50. I wish I could see all of my previous brackets. Whenever DK is in a debatable match I always seem to make the wrong pick, whether its betting against or on him. Stupid naked monkey.

Pre-contest, I would have confidently taken MK11 > Tekken 7. No guarantees it'd win, but I know which game I would have taken.

This is super-impressive with SMO. Next round will be interesting -- we're gonna have some interesting divisional build-up here.

I think 2B is much more popular than the game. I think Nier is going to win its match but it's not going to be a blowout like some of these other ones.

I also think the only reason people are surprised about today's octopath result is because of the last game contest. If that contest had never happened, would you still have taken undertale here?

Donkey Kong stinking it up in today's match makes me feel better about Uncharted 4 beating Mario Kart 8. Just like DKC: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 is another game that originated as a Wii U game and got ported to the Switch later on. Getting a Switch port didn't seem to make up for DKC: Tropical Freeze being handed a death sentence through its original release on Wii U.

The Switch version of Tropical Freeze was a bare-bones, relatively under-the-radar port released to pad out Nintendo's anemic 2018 lineup. The Switch version of Mario Kart 8 genuinely earned its "Deluxe" moniker from a content standpoint and is the system's top-selling game, full-stop.

In a nutshell, MK8 is effectively a Switch title, while Tropical Freeze is a Wii U game with an asterisk.

As a confident Octopath picker here, yes, with equal confidence. If 2015 had never happened, I would guess Undertale would be the strongest indie here.

Also, I agree with Bosco about Tropical Freeze vs. Mario Kart 8.

lol. MK8 is NOT a switch title. The game came out in 2015. Also sales mean jack shit on this site. How have the Nsmb games done in these contests?

BOTW is seen as a switch title because it came out the same time and when wii u was truly dead.

While I'm sure a lot of Octopath Traveler's votes are just people anti-voting Undertale, I wouldn't be surprised it was decently played on this site.

It does seem like a very GameFAQs type of game. Back when it came out it was touted as a return to classic Square JRPGs, so it had really good word-of-mouth and it's not that obscure of a game.

Now we'll see next round how it fares with its own strength, but I still doubt it's beating Shovel Knight.

The series has never done well here but 5 was the best selling game in the series and seemed to get a lot of good word of mouth. Plus a triumphant return after ten years and the mediocre reboot may have given it a bit more oomph here than usual.

We missed out on CT handing FF7 its ass or a fantastic Finale of epic matches because of that shit

Yeah that wasn't going to happen. FF7 would've easily beaten CT.

Except, you know, the fact that Melee was rallying anyway. So we never would've gotten to see the match even without Undertale. Remember, Melee rallied in a match it was already winning comfortably, long before the opponents it actually needed rallies to beat.

...Still, today's result surprises me. I expected Undertale to either get hate-stomped the way Draven was in 2018 or win two matches on natural strength. Losing a close one like this? Seems strange.

Chrono Trigger vs. Smash Bros. Melee: 63.28% / 36.72%
Smash Bros. Melee vs. Final Fantasy VII: 42.92% / 57.08%

From recent contests we know that these results should be pretty close to what a non-rallied match result would be. Picking FF7 to beat CT is a gutsy upset pick at best. Claiming FF7 would win easily is absurd.

Very easily if it gets a rally, very unlikely if it doesn't.

But even with such a close result and small lead, I don't think it's going to get a rally.
Undertale is "old news" and gamefaqs is even less relevant than back than, so there are even less incentives.

Big Undertale cut there. However it largely seems to have been driven by Octopath collapsing.

Oh, I'm not saying CT wasn't stronger indirectly. But picking FF7 to lose to a fellow Squaresoft RPG just seems crazy.

It's not impossible, though. For years we said Samus was indirectly stronger than Mario, but it didn't look like she'd ever actually beat him. And she still hasn't, but only because of the registered user bonus; she actually broke 51% in the raw vote in their Losers' Bracket match.

But again, it's a moot point. Melee started rallying all the way back in Round 2 against GSC. Blaming the lack of a CT-FF7 match on Undertale is folly.

Woke up, checked the results. As expected...Yeah to tell the truth I thought OT would win even though I picked UT. I mean that was 5 years ago and OT just is more popular now.
Also why are people suprised that MO is winning by this much? Pretty sure it is the 3rd strongest Mario game here, maybe even the 2nd strongest! People don't know how much strong is Switch?

Tbf there are trolls making topics to try and stir up drama. Best just ignored. This will be a positive of Undertale losing, that nonsense stops!

I think people expected Odyssey to be stronger than Galaxy but not necessarily up there with the all time Mario games in strength. This result is substantially better than what Super Mario 64 would get on Mortal Kombat 2, and while there is a strong likelihood that MK2 is stronger than MK11, I am having a hard time seeing that gulf as wide enough to put Odyssey a league below 64, especially when you consider that that MK2 result was from pretty much the dark age of the series.

A lot of things have happened since 2015 regarding Shovel Knight. A Switch version came out, two DLC campaigns, and the Assist Trophy cameo in Ultimate all happened since BGE3. Oh, and Wikipedia states that a little under 2 million copies were sold from July 2015 to now, meaning it's tripled in sales since the months before BGE3

This is one of the few titles in the contest that absolutely had reason to increase in power since the last contest. Of course, the same could have been said about Undertale, but Shovel Knight doesn't have a quarter of the voters vowing to never play it, even though it's basically a love letter to games they do love like Earthbound and Mario RPG.

So? It's not like Galaxy was a game for casuals more so than Odyssey.

Console sales have never been very deciding unless we're talking extreme cases like the Wii U. Moreso, the games themselves matter much more than the console they are on. Odyssey is doing well because it's a fantastic game first and foremost, not because it's a Switch game.

This site has shown countless times how much values nostalgia, the average user grew up in the 90s. It's definitely bold to state that being on the Switch means you'll be that strong.

People are surprised here partially because fellow Switch Ultimate did worse on a game believed to be weaker and Smash has stronger than Mario every console except N64.
