Anecdotal, but my cousin's 13 year old daughter is obsessed with Undertale. He's always posting pictures of her drawings, and half of them have the Undertale skeleton guy in them

Fair enough. I'm just assuming the fandom is the same that formed in 2015, but it could get new fans. I don't know what kids these days like.

playing Octopath Traveler now... the game is not bad, it's actually kinda good

I started playing it about 2 weeks ago. It was on sale in the eShop, half price. Wasn't expecting much from it at all. It's a pretty damn good game.

Undertale was released on Switch as well and had some small Smash exposure recently. I'd be surprised if it hadn't gathered some new fans since 2015

Also i'm surprised that Hollow Knight's reddit is actually bigger than Undertale.
Not in subscriber count (but that rarely go down even when people stop following a subreddit) but in general activity or average connection

Why not? While I agree Shovel Knight has a lot of reasons to be stronger, I don't see Dragon's Dogma being worth much.

Primrose got around 26% on Zero, not too bad for a character in an ensemble cast game. That's about the same Lloyd Irving got in 2005 and we all know Tales of Symphonia has some strength. I know, characters =/= games in terms of strength, but Undertale may end up looking a bit respectable once this is over.

Eh, It's not really that surprising to me.

I can't pretend I'm an expert on fandom, but my impression is that Undertale is one of those "fad" games along with stuff like FNAF, Doki Doki, etc where it gets super popular quickly and attracts a lot of people that are more into it for the community/fanart/memes/etc but then it burns out quickly as well when people get bored and move onto something else.

Whereas Hollow Knight is more of a traditional game, where it has a lower peak and you don't see its fan art and cosplay spammed everywhere, but its popularity holds up better long term.

I hate that Undertale is considered a meme game because while it's true its popularity peaked really high and faded, it's still genuinely an amazing game that evokes the '90s a million times better than Octopath.

But that is the thing. Untertale is a meme game and Octopath is a very serious game with a really dark tone too.

DD has a hardcore fanbase, but apparently it's not big enough to challenge one of the top indies. Makes you wonder why Binding of Isaac vs Nioh was way more debated when that matchup has a very similar dynamic.

I think the other component to Undertale's precipitous drop is that "r@nd0m m3m3 cuLtUr3" isn't nearly as "cool" as it was in 2015.

Undertale is the epitome of "t3h PeNgU1N oF d00m" weirdos, and 2015 is probably the biggest that subculture was.

I think that while Undertale is considered a meme game, its still popular in its own right. It just that popularity doesnt translate to doing well on GameFAQs unless it has a rally behind it.

Undertale got acclaimed in part because it wasnt a meme game despite appearing like one. Its a great RPG with a tonne of substance. Then the internet ruined everything as it always does.

Yeah, Undertale wasn't really a meme game.
However, the Internet transformed it into one. Or at least altered the public perception of it for enough people that it's now considered a meme game.

Agreed. I am finding it hard to see how Odyssey isnt at least on a par with Ultimate indirectly. However, Ultimate could win by asserting the hierarchy.

Super Mario Odyssey is amazing. The first big Switch game I played that wasnt disappointing in the slightest.

I may get a Switch this year, finally.

If I do, my priority list is

1- BotW
2- Odyseey
3- Untitled Goose Game

Then I'll think about the rest.

not a chance. Iltimate fanbase isnt really dedicated.

most of these people are smash fans who move onto next game whenever new one comes out. Melee will always have its hardcore supporters.

also ultimate and odyssey look to be around the same strength.

CT was significantly stronger than base Melee

At this point I expect SMO to keep putting up higher numbers than SSBU this division, but my true test to see if we have a fraud alert-situation with SSBU is if God of War sinks or swims. if it falters, I mean...SSBU didn't exactly impress against it in a GotY we all expected SSBU to win:

I've thought SSBU would be the #2 game in this contest despite those numbers due to GoW probably also being legit, seeing SSBM and SSBB both nearly win the last GotD contest, and Mario not having a stronger title here than its generation's SSB-game since the Nintendo 64.

If GoW doesn't score blow-outs in its first two rounds and impress/win against FO:NV though...yeah, SMO could steal that favorite-status and earn the right to be slaughtered by LoZ:BotW instead.

Part of me wants to see SMO go to the final and part of me would prefer seeing Smash lose to BotW instead because SMO is a significantly better game than BotW
