https://www.nytimes.com/1987/09/18/us/biden-admits-plagiarism-in-school-but-says-it-was-not-malevolent.html

the last one is the original article with the quote from him where he outright says "I was not an activist"

not sure how "I was not an activist" translates to "I was involved in organizing sit-ins and desegregating movie theaters" like he has been touting this election cycle

I also don't really care about his record on civil rights from 40 years ago as long as I feel he is sincere now.

But the sticking point for me is, what ideas does Biden bring to the table? Does he have any plan other than repeating the same policies tried by Reagan/Clinton/Bush/Obama? Including hiring the same advisors.

Neoliberal economics really only works for the 1% and we cannot go back to it. We just cannot afford it as a country.

to be clear - the problem isn't htat he wasn't an activist - the problem is that he repeatedly lies about it to win over black voters.

or, best case scenario, his mind is getting so bad that he legitimately doesn't remember that he wasn't involved in these things.

neither is good!

Sorry, I think I exaggerated a bit. It's only really good for the 1%. It also works for the whole top 10%. Maybe it's halfway tolerable for the rest of the top 20%. But certainly not for anyone below that.

and if he actually was involved in even desegregating one movie theater and one restauraunt, why is that not in any of his published biographies? any single fact-checked source?

his auto-biography makes no mention of these things. don't you think he'd want that in there if there was actual truth to it?

Anyway, if it is indeed the worst case scenario and he made it all up, I don't think any lies from before I was born are something I'd factor into my support. If his most recent statements are lies that's more troubling, and I might consider looking around if there were any good alternatives, but unfortunately there aren't for me. It's not worse than all of Bloomberg's shit, it's not enough to bridge a massive ideological divide between me and Bernie, and I don't think any of the other candidates really have a shot.

I knew/know very little about her, but I think this sounds like a dream VP pick for Bernie:

https://jacobinmag.com/2020/02/bernie-sanders-vice-president-primary-tammy-baldwin

Shes a gay woman from Wisconsin who won overwhelmingly in Trump country in 2018, supports single payer healthcare, voted against war and the Patriot Act, and has passed a bill for veterans healthcare.

Pure-checklist math, she ticks a lot of boxes.

super late debate takes because i didn't watch it until now i was busy

Will try to keep this shorter than my usual ones because of the lateness.

Warren > Sanders > Biden >>> Klobuchar > Buttigieg >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bloomberg

lmao at Warren repeatedly going down the line "your plan is shit, your plan is worse, you mean well but your plan is also trash" I think I said a few days before the debate that if nothing else I hoped Warren could go out taking down Bloomberg and she chose that route. Sanders was solid too. Biden gets 3rd almost by default because while I think he stumbled a bit he was mostly okay while I think the Buttigieg v Klobuchar war didn't really reflect great on either of them but it was worse for Buttigieg who not only came out worse from that specifically but god he really does seem to have those talking points. He'd had "turn the page" for a few debates now but you could tell he also equipped that whole "two most polarizing figures on the stage" thing for today and trotted it out a few times (low key was hoping Sanders would interject with a "now don't be so hard on yourself pete" comment when he brought it back out later.)

lmfao bloomberg. dunked on by everyone but his answers when pressed were so bad. most brutal was probably when warren (and later biden) grilled him on NDAs and women in the workplace in general but Warren 100% had his number from the jump when she said listen to how he worded his answers. It rung true on every answer he gave.

I think I read an opinion (piece? Can't recall) that social conservatives may have been disproportionately successful at winning political power but what they really want is to win the social/cultural power back and that where a lot of their disdain for "Hollywood elites" comes from since they have been losing there constantly for years and I felt like there was some truth to that.

While I dont agree with her on everything, Tammy Baldwin is awesome. That would also be a smart move by Bernie, since her as VP could help swing Wisconsin in his favor. I would love to watch her destroy Pence in the VP debate.

So many politicians talk and talk about supporting our veterans, but you can tell she actually cares based on her actions.

Interesting theory on Trump's approval rating rise from The Economist's data guy. As the thread explains (and he links a graph splitting out the two categories of polls) but basically the rise in Trump's approval rating is entirely coming from polls that do not weight by partisanship/2016 vote (Gallup included), polls that do such weighing find it's basically flat since the impeachment inquiry began. Taken together he notes there probably has been a rise on the whole but not nearly as substantial as it's being made out to be by the media.

OTOH, the Nates (Silver and Cohn) have made comments indicating they don't believe that theory. So we've got a data fight on our hands here.

Hey, us outlier polls with significantly higher anti Trump numbers are right. Everyone else is wrong. = /

Economist has been going opposite of the trend basically and swinging wildly.

12/7 -9
12/14 -9
12/22 -11
12/28 -9
1/5 -11
1/11 -4
1/19 -4
1/26 -9
2/2 -10
2/9 -7
2/16 -11

January when his approval descended, they went to -4s. Now when his approval is rising, they are raising up to -11. It's like opposite of the trends. Economist seems iffy on reliability compared to the rest of the polls.

The thing is, suppose differential partisan response rate is happening, where Republicans are becoming more willing to answer polls.

You know what else is a poll people can answer or not? The election.

VP selection can matter but it usually doesn't.
put in a 78 year old man, it matters a lot more than it does normally.

it can also backfire - McCain's choice of Palin was not beneficial in any way. while it does seem like he would've lost regardless, she cost him a few points and this situation resembles that one a bit, mainly the idea of old man with known health issues.

a VP can't do a lot, maybe move the needle up in a state by a few percent (which would be huge here) but it can also be a major point of contention if you pick it wrong. that's why it's usually safe like... whoever it was that hillary picked, or used to send a message out there, like Trump did with Pence.

The VP also has to be a really good poison pill so Congressional Republicans don't turn on Trump. Imagine if he had picked someone they thought would be a great president as VP - they would have given a lot more thought to removing Trump from office.
