Countless social ills could be curtailed by limiting access to alcohol, although enacting an outright ban would be tough. Given that alcohol is strongly tied to criminal activity, traffic fatalities, and sexual violence (including rape), I'm all for additional restrictions.

I don't drink alcohol, but I hate the idea of actually sending people to jail because of drinking it or selling it, so more laws that are stupid (like drug laws) would just be bad.

Drugs, prostitution, alcohol etc should all be legal, and taxed.

Rediculous that they are not.

It doesn't work. The main issue that the women's suffrage movement wanted was alcohol prohibition. As soon as they got the vote they voted for prohibition. We know how well that went.

It's called US history, Zeus. You might want to pick up a book. Or read some articles. Or watch some Youtube videos; start with PBS' Prohibition documentary. Or something. Jesus Christ.

The most obvious reason is that prohibition didn't stop people from producing alcohol (just made it illegal, bolstering a black market) or consuming it. Let's put aside the fact that illegal alcohol resulted in a spike in tainted alcohol deaths as it's not relevant to the point of domestic violence. Since it didn't stop consumption of alcohol, it didn't stop alcohol-related abuse.

It should be noted that the desire to stop domestic violence WAS a motivator for many people to support prohibition back in the day. Many of the same people who originally hoped that prohibition would stop domestic violence later went on to support its repeal... for the simple reason that it didn't work.

I hardly drink (just ciders or whatever) so I'm neither here nor there on alcohol. I do fully agree with the idea about why worry about others. I'm sure there are 2 sides in any kind of domestic feud so it's best not to interfere. You put yourself in that position by dating.

Yeah but it's also easier to go online and learn how to make your own moonshine and swish as well as easier to get materials.

Hell just throw some yeast, sugar and some fruit in a garbage can for a couple weeks and there's your alcohol.

Pretty much. It's incredibly easy to make your own booze at home. Wine's just grape juice, water, and yeast. Mead's just honey, water, yeast, and a few extra nutrients. Cider's just apple juice, water, and yeast. Beer's more complicated because you have to sprout your grains and then steep them to get a fermentable liquid, but still very feasible to brew at home. Distillation is trickier because you need to have some sort of still to do it, but you don't need distilled booze to get drunk.

Granted, the ease of home brewing might actually work against the emergence of organized criminal bootlegging, since people can so easily make their own booze without turning to bootleggers. It's hard to say. Either way, though, it's really, really easy to produce alcohol, and the only way you could possibly prevent that is by also banning yeast, which would prevent people from making bread (which is bad) and also still wouldn't stop people from making sourdough starters to use (which would generally produce inferior products, but it'd work).

Its almost impressive how you manage to one-up yourself on the stupid shit you say.

Cost/benefit analysis. By how much might it reduce domestic violence? (How many wife-beaters would never have hit their wives if they'd stayed sober?) Would this reduction be sufficient to offset all the downsides of prohibition?
