I disagree. It was a well told two-episode story about the dangers of mob justice and witch hunts, while very delicately, and intelligently weighing all sides of the issues, while neither condemning justice, nor making accusations, but looking at the full story. It might have been dissatisfying for the people who wanted to see Dan burn before seeing his side of things, or the full story (which they've hidden from viewers this season, until this episode). And seeing everything come out in a way that actually didn't favor the witch hunt was honestly surprising from Survivor, especially in recent season. I just found it to be a very interesting episode, and I can see why this was a two-episode. This was kind of the biggest twist the show has ever had, from a non-gameplay point of view.

Man, that episode was something awful. I don't know if I want to watch the rest of this season now. The fact that Feely Dan, Elizabeth, and Missy - all absolutely horrible people - won out is awful. My dad compared the way Elizabeth and Missy backpedaled after playing the moral card to what Varner did. I can't say I disagree with him.

This entire episode was thoroughly unwatchable, top to bottom.

I'm writing this at the top after writing out my thoughts, If you actually read all of this thank you, if you're reading all of this and disagree with can you be constructive? I'm just so conflicted in my head that it would feel much better for it to be talked out, if that makes sense.

I feel.... shook? For lack of a better term. I know for a fact that there is such a thing as lack of social awareness or social perception that it is incredibly possible that someone is touchy feely like Dan and genuinely not mean it, even though it makes people feel uncomfortable. I, also, very much understand that the world's social dynamics cause women not to talk up in these scenarios and unfortunately, that is the only way to help someone that is not socially aware or cannot read the perceptions of others. So the fact that people are hating Dan for it, scares the hell out of me. I'm not saying that I have those problems but my anxieties make me doubt my reads on my perception and just because of the gravity of the situation becomes and how life altering it could be if you're the person doing the actions, I would fear to be someone in Dan's shoes.

Missy and Liz, I had forgotten about Missy telling Liz to talk about the uncomfortableness to Janet and that's huge because that is taking advantage of the situation and I understand that nothing is fair in Survivor BUT you would think that when production stepped in that everyone would know that this should probably be removed from the game but that was never going to happen. The scenario being leveraged to vote out Dan is not good but at least understandable. I also understand Liz believing that Janet would be lying was also understandable because of the situstion but she committed the crime first for exaggerating her discomfort. This whole thing is so muddy and it has dropped dirtiness across what has been a great season until this point.

Hadn't Kellee talked to Dan literally in the very first episode to tell him he made her uncomfortable? lol. I did think he was sincere in being unaware of how he could come across, but his speech during tribal was full of red flags in which he attempted to minimize the issue while also claiming not to understand it. A lot of people (understandably, perhaps?) have a trouble simply apologizing rather than giving excuses, especially when their character is in jeopardy, and I think Dan erred hard in that sense. Trying to speak of how you are basically a model for the Me Too movement, talking about your wife, attempting to pass off the situations in which he may have committed the harassment as cramped space or trying to become close to someone for warmth. It's like trying to put out flames with a blindfold. Good people are capable of wrong behaviors, too. But it's difficult for a guy like Dan who is only getting a fraction of the story because the rest of the cast isn't willing to fess up on the situation.

I thought this was an incredible double episode of television, even if a lot of these people showed their asses here. Survivor is sometimes an absolute microcosm of reality and independently of which side you're on, the ability to be able to be a spectator in such a story that rings incredibly true today was truly documentary-like in a way Survivor hadn't been in a long time. What I found most incredible is that we had someone playing basically every one of the traditional roles in such a situation. Most interesting I thought was Missy who was fine letting it out and discussing it with someone she trusted in Kellee, but then retracted her statements when confronted in public. Elizabeth basically having no horse in the race and choosing to believe her own perception over the victims'. Janet standing up for the victim and being ostracized for it. Aaron accusing Janet of victimization because he has close female connections and thus feeling like he can be an authority on the subject. Jamal attempting to play a voice of reason and moderator. Long list of etceteras and every one of them equally representative of what happens on a much more massive scale in the world. I cannot think of a moment more powerful than Janet trying to talk to Dan and then confronting Liz, moments after we saw Elizabeth and Missy lie their asses off and have several players try to cheer up Dan and tell him how this was only Kellee all along to cover their tracks.

I don't think any of the people in the majority alliance was spared from being edited as a total douche except Elaine and Tommy. Tommy especially got that scene with Janet that painted him in a much more positive light than anyone else in that group. At the end of the day, the footage selected will create an impression, so we have to be careful not to judge these people too hard, either.

edit. Oh, and I was screaming at my screen when Kellee didn't play one her idols. What the hell, girl? smh

That episode was insane. The tribal council kind of reminded me of an episode of Law and Order: SVU where a total creep gets a super lenient sentence due to some technicality or something, and you just have this awful feeling in the pit of your stomach because no justice was served.

I might post more of my feelings later, but overall I think it was a bizarre, uncomfortable, but extremely gripping two hours of television. Unfortunately, I don't know where the rest of the season goes from here. I feel like the premerge was surprisingly solid, but most of the people left, barring Janet (the GOAT) and maybe a few others, are varying degrees of scum and I don't want to root for any of them. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

I really have a hard time seeing the editors leaving that line in where Sandra says that a woman wins if Tommy wins. My money's on Elaine, because she was protected from everything too. Janet needs a Ben-like run at this point and I don't see Noura winning unless we're about to see the start of the Noura redemption arc.

My issue with Tommy is that he's had close to no personal content at all. He's full-on MOR through and through, he would be one of the most toneless winners in Survivor history for someone who isn't being actively ignored by the edit. Perhaps I drowned out something out of his monotone drone, but I can't remember him saying anything about himself outside of maybe the premiere when he mentioned being a teacher or whatever? He's not even a strategybot like Kim, he's a solid nothing. His confessionals rarely add anything. Maybe the editors had no material of him saying anything remotely interesting but I'm just shocked they'd try to present someone as this hopelessly forgettable. He's like the second coming of Tyler Fredrickson.

If he ever finds an idol, I think we might be able to gauge his chances of winning a lot better. Those scenes are always a good way to eliminate someone from being a contender, imo. I thought Kellee stood a decent chance until she found her idol tbh. Same with Janet and Chelsea before.

that was a pretty difficult and overwhelming couple of hours of survivor and I have a few thoughts

shutout to the producers and editors, who made sure to point out basically every documented instance of Dan actually doing the creepy shit Kellee called him out on

also shutout to probst for grilling dan when he kept going on with the cop-out "well, if you're not going to drop this" like what he did was some easily-forgotten accident

but uh...the people that be fucked up by casting Dan. they failed by failing the women out there on the island. I know that they certainly would have never expected anything like this to happen, and the producers did their best with what happened out there, but I wish someone would just straight up say "we feel terrible for the behavior of Dan out there, and we made a mistake casting him." it would make the whole discourse surrounding his involvement in the game and the difficulty with the people left balancing their moral compass and game status a lot more palatable.

also please let Janet win somehow

And people blame Elizabaeth and Missy for DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG. Elizabeth thought Janet was lying to her, so she just agreed with everything Janet was saying. Is that really so bad? How many times has someone lied on survivor? It's not like she said "Dan raped me!!!" She told nothing but the goddamn truth...Dan IS touchy feely, and Dan IS creepy...but not to such an extent that Elizabeth wasn't willing to work with (and just like Kellee, I remind you, had been all too willing to do before her alliance fell apart).

Everyone is so quick to cast judgement....there's two sides to every story, people. Just because someone plays the victim doesn't mean they're wrong, and it doesn't mean they're right either.
